The former aviation minister had embarked on a series of projects across most airports in the country and the government had received billions as loans for construction work on these facilities.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Ortom explained that some loans obtained for the construction of four cargo airports in the country had accrued interests amounting to billions of naira.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He therefore noted that it was in the best interest of the country to strategise on how to settle the debt and review some of the projects.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said, "We have met with the Ministry of Finance and we are setting up an inter-ministerial committee to review the projects. We have looked at the figures and based on paucity of funds we feel that something needs to be done.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>"We are going to review these projects to see where we can, at least for now, suspend some of the projects that are yet to take off so that we can bring the figure down and work towards working within the releases from the appropriation so that we settle the ongoing projects."</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Ortom further said the government would henceforth prioritise projects in the sector, stressing that the ministry was faced with huge financial challenges.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said, "We are going to prioritise. Because in a situation where we have this kind of huge challenges we have to prioritise what we do. Challenges are meant to be overcome by the operators. By the time we put heads together with the Ministry of Finance and Budget Office of the Federation, we must find a way out.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>"There is a roadmap and we have no other choice than to complete this roadmap that was approved by the Federal Executive Council and ably supported by the National Assembly.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>"So we have set up a committee that is going to look at that and also not just verifying those indebtedness but also finding the source of funding for these projects."</p><br /><br/><br /><p>On whether he was not worried about the level of indebtedness by the ministry, the senate committee chairman said the government would find a way to address the issue.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>"Most importantly, the projects as conceived are very important projects that are necessary and if for budgetary constraints they are not moving forward, we will find a way. It will help us to ensure the availability of vaccines and timely delivery.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“It is my hope that with the loan, polio will be interrupted this year,” Chukwu said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said Nigeria would not be the last country to eradicate polio, pointing out that government had taken steps to ensure that all children were immunised.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Nigeria Country Representative, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Dr Mairo Mandara said the country had made progress in polio eradication due to political support shown at every level.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The loan will provide financial stability to the programme by fully funding oral polio vaccine for about 18 months from the time it is executed.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mandara also lauded religious and traditional leaders in the country for the crucial part they played in polio eradication.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>She said the foundation would repay the loan to the Japanese government with the principal and interest after project execution.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The loan is also intended to be a useful tool for the Federal Government to help improve immunisation coverage rates in areas that need additional support to stop transmission.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“After Nigeria has executed the loan agreement, the foundation will commit to repay the loan to Japan on behalf of Nigeria if the required immunisation coverage rates are met,” Mandara said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Japan’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Ryuichi Shoji said their financial contribution would build a robust bridge for Nigeria to achieve the goal of polio eradication.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said the loan of $85 million would have preferential interest rate of 0.2 per cent.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The loan will be utilised for procurement of polio vaccines for children under five years of age,” he said, noting that, Japan has partnered Nigeria for 14 years on polio.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“As long as a single child remained infected, children in all countries were at risk of polio.”</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

He stressed that no responsible person could ever fathom and eventually encourage the killing and maiming of innocent Nigerians.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Aliero, who was also a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) spoke in an exclusive chat with Vanguard, Sunday.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said the insurgents were acting on a religious ideology and belief that completely ran at variance with Islamic principles and dictates, stressing, “Certainly, the insurgent attack is condemnable and contrary to certain beliefs in certain quarters that some politicians are the ones pushing this insurgency, I think they are wrong.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>No responsible politician will support the killing and maiming of innocent people in Nigeria. Afterall, it is the very people you aspire to govern, then how can you come and sponsor their killing, crippling the economy, causing untold hardship to them? It is my belief that the insurgents have no local support.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“After all, we know it started in 2009 when the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was the president and we know that the killing of their leader is what caused the escalation of the insurgency. The whole thing was wrongly handled. If government had handled it properly, we wouldn’t have reached where we have reached today. So, there is a lot of misunderstanding and some people are making misleading statements about the insurgency. It is my believe that politicians are not behind it.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to him, the Islamic extremists had a link with Al-Qaeda and other terrorists cells from where they got their training and funding and urged the federal government to step up effort to contain the insurgency in the north east.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said: “My belief is that they got contact with Al-Quada and El-Shabab in the Middle East and also East Africa, Somalia in particular and they got some training from there and even funding from what we hear from the security agencies, experts when they speak on TV. Certainly, it is not Nigerians that are supporting them. It is not Nigerians that are arming them. And if they are Nigerians, why can’t the security agencies expose them?</p><br /><br/><br /><p>They have all it takes: intelligence gathering, investigations to expose them. So, why don’t they expose them so that we know them? I don’t want a situation where Nigerians will keep on getting wrong information, getting influenced by certain propaganda.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“So, the true position is that this insurgents are acting on a wrong ideology, on a wrong belief which is not Islamic and Nigerian. It is foreign based. They got indoctrinated and they are inflicting heavy injury on our national psyche. But I am responding to this issue because I have heard so many people talking in this vein that these girls were not abducted.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It was only after the international community came to talk about and offered to give assistance, the video clips were shown. BBC went and even took pictures, CNN also went to Chibok that some of these people who are making this statement started to believe that it is true. Ordinarily, it would have gone just like. And let me tell you, there are several incidences that happened in that area that went unnoticed.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Anybody who makes that kind of statement is irresponsible. He doesn’t have the feeling of the people. These are young schools girls between the ages of 15 and 16. Some of the parents, that’s all they have. One daughter or two daughters and to them, there is nothing that can be done to get them comforted if they don’t get their children back. So, this kind of statement is irritating and grossly irresponsible.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I for one will never subscribe to that view. There is no question of saying that these girls were not abducted. They were really abducted. They were shown on TV. Their parents came crying. The government is doing all what is humanly possible to bring them back. The community even went to search for them in the forest without water and food and they had to come back because they were helpless. So, for anybody to come and make that kind of statement, it is either he is mad or he doesn’t known what he is doing or some people are behind him to make this kind of statement that will irritate some of us who feel very bad about this situation. The international community is very much concerned and that kind of statement is painting government in bad light and the security agencies should take note of that.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“If they don’t, it means whatever he says government is behind him. I am sure that if somebody made a similar statement from another bad of the country, he would have been arrested. El-rufai made a statement that is even milder he was invited. Why not invite this man who is making this stupid statement. I feel pained if people are making this kind of statement. I am a parent, I wouldn’t want my daughter to be abducted and I will do anything possible to bring this girls back. So, you should ignore this kind of irresponsible statement.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“They are meaningless. It is painting government in bad light and government should come out to condemn this kind of statement because it is even dividing the nation. There are statements that are like a flame. You are fighting enemies with no boundary. Terrorists are everywhere. They are among us but we don’t know them. In this case, you don’t know the enemy. The person sitting next to you might be one of those terrorists. He told my brother that his car had a fault and wanted to repair it. My brother then asked him to take the car away. Sensing something unusual I went inside and asked all the members of our family to leave the house. Just as my brother was persuading the man to leave our premises, he (the bomber) entered the car and immediately he started it. It exploded and killed my brother, his son and his friend.”</blockquote><br /><p>It was also gathered that the bomber had gone to the viewing centre earlier in the day.</p><br /><p>An official of the National Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Mohammed Suleiman, told our correspondent that the agency received a distress call at about 9 pm on Saturday and immediately rushed to the scene to carry out a search and rescue operation. Those whose wealth has not qualified for the payment of Zakkat will be made to give out endowments,” Wamakko pledged.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He maintained that God endowed some people with various forms of wealth not only for themselves and their families. Therefore, wealthy individuals and other privileged persons must imbibe the culture of assisting others who are less privileged.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He stated that the state government spends over N77 million monthly through the state Zakkat and Endowment Committee to assist orphans and the less privileged members of the society. He added that the money was being spent monthly in the free treatment of indigent patients and the payment of monthly allowances to physically challenged persons in the state.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

<script type="text/javascript"> <script size='468x60' src='http://srvpub.com/adServe/banners?tid=22528_31474_5' type='text/javascript'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google_ad_client = "ca-pub-6630608044863529"; google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p>The Lagos State Government has described the strike embarked on by lecturers of the Lagos State University (LASU) as an unnecessary drawback for its spirited efforts to boost the academic standing and reputation of the institution.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The government therefore appealed to the striking lecturers to embrace dialogue instead of continuing with their industrial action.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>In a statement made available to newsmen on Saturday, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba, said the striking members of the LASU branch of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) appeared to be whipping up sentiments to justify a premeditated industrial action, as all the points they advanced could not even be properly classified as trade disputes that could warrant an “Indefinite Strike Action.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Reacting to the call for the reversal of LASU school fee’s regime, he expressed surprise at how this could have justified a strike, noting that the lecturers were aware that government was already in constructive discussions with the students.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“It is a matter of fact that the students have already submitted a position paper on the issue which government has also constituted a 7-man committee to review and advise upon,” he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>While explaining the government’s stance on the various issues raised by the lecturers, Ibirogba faulted them as a crude attempt to force new terms and conditions of service on the university without due regard to their practical feasibility or the state government’s interests and perspectives as employer of ASUU executives, according to him, “have in an attempt to rush out on strike, evaded all attempts to make them follow due process and engage in reasoned dialogue as regards the issues raised,” adding that most of them were not at all contemplated by the terms and conditions of the lecturers’ employment as well as its financial and academic plan.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said following a “14- day ultimatum” issued by the union, the state government has set up an ad-hoc committee, which examined all the points raised by the lecturers”</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>
