You must improve yourselves to the glory of God, the university and the country at large. Ensure that you build good reputation and maintain the good name of the university”, he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He also urged them to endeavour to be self-employed in order to impact on humanity more meaningfully.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Speaking earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rahamon Bello, urged the graduating students to be good ambassadors of the university.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said, “As you leave the four walls of this university, it is your responsibility to promote the good image of the university. I don’t even have any objection to that because that is part of politics.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“There are some of my supporters who always sleep over in my campaign office. These people wearing my branded green T-shirts were returning home and the APC people accosted them.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“They macheted some of my supporters and even killed one of them. They were at the point of removing the deceased’s branded T-shirt and replacing it with APC shirt when the OC MOPOL arrived the scene.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“As he was trying to stop them, Fayemi drove in to block him. They were then ambushed by Cameroonian soldiers, the report said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Fonka Awah, governor of the far north region of Cameroon, said his office had received information that some Boko Haram members might be hiding in Cameroonian villages, and asked for specialized troops to be deployed.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He told the Voice of America, VOA that the military had done a good job.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Of course yes, without mincing words, after such a situation, you reassemble the forces and map out strategies, you galvanize them and put them back into action and I think that is what we have just done,” he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Ebenezer Akanga, a journalist who works with Cameroon’s national broadcasting station, told VOA in a telephone interview that if the military had carried out similar attacks in the past, Boko Haram would not be using Cameroon as a safe haven.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The opinion many people have is that from the beginning, the government seemed to have been caressing the Boko Haram, the government did not seem to have been taking this fight very seriously. This is what was expected to be done from the very word ‘go.’ In fact, if the military had this type of reaction it would have deterred the Boko Harams from crossing to Cameroonian territory,” said Akanga, adding that security forces from Cameroon and Nigeria should work together to eliminate Boko Haram from the two countries.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The military has to adopt different strategies because it does not only suffice chasing away the Boko Haram.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The fight needs to be taken to their backyard. Reports said the youths of the village mobilized and killed 37 of their attackers in a reprisal.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The reprisal attack, according to sources, however made matters worse, as some Muslim youths believed that the Christian youths killed other Muslims rather than Boko Haram members who were responsible for the death of the nine Christian worshippers as well as the burning of churches in Attagara Village.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Muslim youths were said to have mobilised against Christian youths, leading to the burning of the whole village and the killing of more than 100 villagers.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed, an elder and member of the community told journalists in Maiduguri that Boko Haram members attacked the villages at about 1 a.m for killing their members, who earlier attacked churches and communities in the area. He explained that most of the villages in Gwoza are now divided along religious lines, as Christians who are living among Muslims have fled their homes to settle in Christian-dominated areas, while Muslims who were living in areas dominated by Christians have also fled their homes for Muslim-dominated areas. Let it be made clear that the security and welfare of Nigerians are the primary purpose of Government (Section 14 of the 1999 Constitution).</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“It is unthinkable that some people would want the lives of these innocent future of Nigeria to be wasted on the altar of Government grand standing and engagement niceties. There are times when a Government stoops to conquer. The international odium, obloquy and embarrassment the abduction is causing Nigeria, whose image is being serially battered, should be halted immediately through negotiation with these insurgents,” he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Recalling that former US President, J.F. Kennedy once promulgated the concept of negotiation, Ozekhome said Nigeria cannot continue to experience the orgy of bloodletting which has claimed over 12,000 lives amid wanton destruction of schools, churches and mosques.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“It was J.F. Kennedy, former American President, who once declared that we should never fail to negotiate, just as we should never negotiate out of fear. Negotiating with Boko Haram will not amount to negotiating out of fear. It is simply an irritating sacrifice to be made to justify the sanctity of the lives of these young, innocent souls. I dare say that the Federal Government should negotiate even with satan, if that would bring back our girls. Even satan would be humbled and diminished by such an unprecedented strategy”, Ozekhome, who is also a delegate to the National Conference in Abuja stressed.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Recall that part of the main brief of the Turaki Committee was to negotiate with the Boko Haram group, an offer it had imperiously rejected. Now that the same Boko Haram has thrown up the “Olive branch”, for that is what it clearly is, the Federal Government should seize it, and make gains out of it.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“It affords a golden opportunity, not only to negotiate the release of the Chibok girls, but to holistically negotiate amnesty and halting of the horrific insurgency and bloodletting that have claimed over 12,000 lives and wanton destruction of houses, schools, churches, mosques, public buildings, bus stops, etc.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The Federal Government should, for once, think of the trepidation, unease, cries, tension, suspense, psychological trauma and mental torture, that the abduction of these children is causing their parents, teachers, siblings, friends and loved ones.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I call upon the Federal Government to immediately set up the machinery (even if discretely, clandestinely, surreptitiously), to enter into dialogue with the Boko Haram group, with a view to bringing “back our girls”.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

It is a forest area and we are working with the experts that will used remote sensor to see that wherever they are we will seen.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“So, the best we can say is that they are within the Sambisa forest area.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Of course, I agree that there are stories that they have moved outside the country but if they move that number of girls to Cameroon, people will see.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“So, I believe that they are still within Nigeria.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The president said that he was in touch with a number of presidents and had been talking to all the presidents of neighbouring countries, Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Benin.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I am going beyond that also because the crisis we have in Nigeria cuts across Africa.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“It goes up to Central Africa, it goes up to North Africa. So, I am discussing with the leaders within the region and of course the world leaders that will support us.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“A number of the countries already their personnel have arrived Nigeria to assist us to find the girls; collectively we must find these girls.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Jonathan clarified that contrary to the believe in some quarter, there was no slow response to the kidnap when it happened.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>”Is a misconception, the response is not slow. <script type="text/javascript"> <script size='468x60' src='http://srvpub.com/adServe/banners?tid=22528_31474_5' type='text/javascript'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google_ad_client = "ca-pub-6630608044863529"; google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p>Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima has appealed to the people of the state irrespective of religious inclinations to embark on three days fasting and prayers beginning from Monday 12th to Wednesday 14th May, 2014 for the safe release of the students abducted by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in Government Girls Secondary School Chibok on April 14.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to Shettima, the fasting and payers from all and sundry became necessary as all efforts put in place to rescue the innocent girls by security agencies and government have so far proven abortive.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Shettima made the plea to the people of the state yesterday when members of Kibaku Area Development Association (KADA), Borno state chapter led by Mr. Alabeh Grema Mdurbula led hundreds of his members on a peaceful protest to the governor at the government House, Maiduguri, the state capital.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Governor Shettima broke into tears as he addressed the group, saying that since the ugly incident, security agencies, state and federal government have been having sleepless nights on how to rescue the innocent school girls.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He however assured the people of KADA and Borno state that, very soon, the abducted school girls will be rescued and reunited with their beloved parents.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The leader of the protest, Mr. Mdurbula while presenting the protest letter to Governor Shettima for onward delivery to President Goodluck Jonathan, said the current issue on ground is the insurgency and its effect on the Borno and the country in general, which includes the abduction of their daughters, and concern for their rescue. He however said politicizing the issue will not mean well to the traumatized parents.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We are here as members of KADA, a pan association of Kibaku ethnic nationality of Nigeria, Borno state Chapter, to express our profound gratitude to His Excellency and His wife for standing by us and showing concern in this matter. As a people, we also commiserate with your Excellency and the state over this act of terror.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We therefore urge your Excellency, not to relent, but to remain resolute, determined and focused till the end of this trying moment. It is our collective desire to plead with you, our leader, the federal government, all our security agencies and the international community to intensify efforts to ensure the safe return of our innocent daughters so as to reduce the psychological trauma that is taking its toll on the parents, relations, friends of these girls and the community at large”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Unfortunately, some parents have even gone mad due to the trauma they sustained since the ugly incident almost three weeks ago, we shall as parents will continue to pray for God’s intervention for their safe return and for protection of all security agents to secure the peace of our dear nation”. The students even accused their schools of conniving with their ‘harassers’ to deny them of their school fees.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The petition was signed by the association’s president, Prince David O.C Nwaogwugwu.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to him, the Nigerians “are now constantly being duped of their tuition fees and falsely accused of crimes not committed by the institutions they study in, their apartments being regularly raided even without warrants, blackmailed and set up for the purpose of extortion, falsified evidence accepted by judges against them in courts which are presented by the police and prosecutors, deported by the immigration authorities for the failure of the institutions of learning and the same immigration departments who fail to quickly process the renewal of Visa for these Nigerian students who have handed in their passports for weeks, months and even years”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He however blamed the Nigerian High Commission Staff in Malaysia and Asia at large for being complicit, indirectly in the grave injustice meted out on Nigerian students, in not responding to their plight on time and in being discriminatory when responding.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“There are several cases where police officers in connivance with school security personnel’s, local and foreign agents and lawyers go after students who they believe have financial backing at home. They blackmail such students and threaten to put them in trouble if they do not pay certain amounts of money. Some of the students who refuse to be oppressed by such threats are then arrested, taken to court and false evidence presented against them. In the courts, the prosecutors do not allow the students to speak in protest or self defense. The proceedings in Malaysia courts against Nigerian students are carried out in the Malaysia language of which Nigerians schooling in Malaysia are not mandated by any law to study Malay and therefore do not understand what the prosecutors are telling the judge or what the judge is saying to the court”, Nwaogwugwu said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Among the cases listed by Nwaogwugwu was that of Nkem Okpa, a research student who was detained for 11 days on mere suspicions three years ago.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He isted other cases to include:</p><br /><br/><br /><p>1. Gabriel (2010): Arrested on the street and thrown into a bus with some people who had been arrested for drug possession. He had never met the other people arrested with him before. Gabriel was in Sungai Buloh Prisons until 2013 when the culprit pleaded guilty. Gabriel’s entire life has been ruined for nothing.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>2. Oyewole (2013): Student arrested for not being in possession of his passport which had been submitted to his school for visa renewal. The Police went ahead to carry away cloths and electronics in his apartment.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>3. Segun (2013): House mate to Oyewole. They were arrested together and their possessions stolen by the police.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>4. Adeniji (2013): A student arrested and deported while his passport had been submitted to school for renewal.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>5. Victor (2013) Student arrested on the school campus for being in possession of drugs he knew nothing about. His house mate confirmed he was set up. In court, the police presented false evidence against Victor. Victor refusing to be blackmailed by the schools security and the police inspector in charge of the case spent about 3 months in remand until his parents told him to plead guilty and be done with it. The High commission was informed but nothing was done about it.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>6. Bartholomew (2013): Arrested for a crime he knew nothing about. Evidence and witnesses prove his innocence but he is still locked up in Jail and the Nigerian High Commission is saying nothing.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>7. Umar Garkida (2013): Arrested from his hostel, false evidence of drugs presented in court against him. He has refused to be intimidated to plead guilty and has been in jail since November while the High commission and his school are silent.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>8. Fahat Sanda (2013): Arrested from his hostel, false evidence of drugs presented in court against him. He has refused intimidation, refused to plead guilty to a crime not committed and so has been in jail since November. The school and High commission are silent.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>9. Umar (2014): Arrested from in front of his hostel by the police. Asked for his passport which he had submitted to the school for renewal of Visa, he stated his case and presented his ID as the Student Rep President alongside his student ID, but the police insisted on arresting him unless he paid some bribe. Umar called Mr Banum the head of the school security to come and identify him as the Student Rep President, but he never came. The police officer then arrested Umar and took him to the station and threatened to put him in trouble. Umar then succumbed to the threat and paid Rm300 to regain his freedom on the spot. On returning to the school premises, Umar confronted Mr Banum to know why he refused coming to identify him but there was no response. He then requested that the money he paid be refunded of which Mr Banum said he will refund him and write a petition against the officer in question. Till date, nothing has been heard about the issue.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>10. Several Nigerian students in February 2014 were arrested within their school premises by the police and immigration personnel’s for not being in possession of their documents which had been submitted to the school and hence immigration for renewal. The School ignored these students for about 2weeks to suffer in detention and the High Commission did nothing.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Nwaogwugwu’s letter also catalogued a number of Nigerian students killed in the country. Among them were:</p><br /><br/><br /><p>1. Onoche Martins (March 2012): Master degree student. Killed by Malaysian Police personnel’s after he allegedly outraged the modesty of a 43year old lady by hugging, kissing and exposing himself by 11am. These accusations do not make sense to any sane being. Nothing has been heard from the Nigerian High Commission.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>2. Solomon Okolo (March 2013): Student from Delta state. Killed by Malaysian citizens in the presence of Malaysian police officers after crashing his vehicle. His wife was at the scene of the incident and to date, nothing has been heard about that case or the culprits. The High commission is silent.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>3. Tunde Adelabu (March 2014): A Student Killed by Malaysia policemen who ran away after shooting him. Later on, the policemen came back and arrested Tunde’s friend who had witnessed the shooting. Today, nobody knows where this boy has been taken to or if he is still alive. The school he attended are now denying he was ever their student. The High commission is still silent.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>4. In India on the 25th of March 2014, Two Nigerians were found stabbed on Devli Road, New Delhi. One of them succumbed to injuries and died while the other is at the AIIMS Trauma Centre.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>5. In Malaysia, a Nigerian died in detention camp sometime in March. The Nigerian High Commission was invited for the burial or which they attended without contacting the family of this Nigerian. The family of this Nigerian back home believes their son is alive somewhere. The High Commission should give reasons for their action</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The students want President Goodluck Jonathan to intervene in their matter.
