We should come together and confront it.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Our view is that political leaders should refrain from making comments capable of inflaming passions. Our comments should reflect support and empathy for our security agents, and not seek to score cheap political points.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We talk about the abductions and the killings. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><a href="http://ift.tt/1lnlFLw"><img alt="fuel subsidy" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-199027" height="182" src="http://ift.tt/1tnPt08" width="300"/> </a> </p><br /><br/><br /><p>The federal government might have finally gotten the support it needs to complete remove fuel subsidy from the books of the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) as it enjoyed an overwhelming support by all the states of the federation, according to Thisday sources.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Although none of its governors raised objection at the meeting, it remains to be seen whether the All Progressives Congress (APC) would condemn the total removal of subsidy and claim it would bring more suffering on the masses.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Also, emerging threats by the labour unions which are against current efforts to end the subsidy have the potential of igniting the flame of crisis in the country if a compromise is not reached by all stakeholders.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The committee had during the March FAAC meeting, constituted a sub-committee to among other things investigate and enlighten members on the performance of the existing subsidy scheme.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Consequently, at its plenary last week, it finally took a decision, after being briefed by the ad hoc investigation committee that petroleum subsidy should be scrapped in its entirety “because we’ve discovered it is more or less a solution worse than the problem it tends to solve.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The decision by the states to throw their weight behind the removal of fuel subsidy, Thisday gathered may not be unconnected with the continued decline in monthly statutory mineral revenue occasioned by oil theft, bunkering and other distortion in production activities.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>As a result, allocations from the federation account no longer suffice to execute the infrastructural needs of the states and local governments which are unable to provide the much-needed jobs and execute people-oriented contracts with little resources.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Documents showed that monthly net statutory allocations to states had been on a decline in recent times averaging about N1.5 billion from between about N2 billion in some states.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The onus continued to fall on governments at the regions to deliver on campaign promises to justify their election into public offices by the people.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Essentially, the states argue that the huge chunk of money which is continually set aside to offset fuel subsidy claims were better given directly to the respective states so the resources could be better administered to solve the plight of the people by prioritising their needs.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>However, following the latest resolve by FAAC to stop the subsidy deductions, General Secretary of Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Mr. Bayo Olowoshile had urged President Goodluck Jonathan to jettison the resolution.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Describing FAAC decision as unacceptable to the union, he argued that removing the subsidy without any corresponding increase in purchasing power of individuals could constitute a negative multiplier effect on all aspects of the economy.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Government must ensure of the turn around maintenance of all the refineries before removing the subsidy. We told government at a meeting we held in January that certain conditions must be met before the removal. Government must fix the four refineries and build new ones. The corruption associated with supply and distribution of petroleum products in the downstream sector of the oil industry must be eliminated.”</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><img alt="abubakar-shekau73737373788" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-121490" height="250" src="http://ift.tt/1pjAkO7" width="412"/>If the recent video released by leader of the Boko Haram terrorist group, Abubakar Shekau yesterday, in which he claimed responsibility for Monday morning’s bombing in Nyanya, that resulted in the death of over 71 persons, is anything to go by, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and indeed other parts of Nigeria may be under threat following Shekau’s boast that he is in the nation’s capital and has dared the security agencies to catch him if they can.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said the Nyanya bombing and many others carried out by his group were in retaliation for all the killing of Muslims in Nigeria and other parts of the world.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>In the 28-minute video, Shekau appeared dressed in military camouflage, a black turban and with an AK-47 rifle slung across his chest. He was holding a thick chewing stick in his right hand with a spiral-bound notepaper in his left.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He began his speech by pointing the chewing stick and mentioning the name of President Goodluck Jonathan three times before saying, “You are just too small”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Shekau said, “We are the ones who carried out the bombing in Abuja in an area called Nyanya. [President] Jonathan you are a lame duck. Jonathan, you are too small for us”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>In the video, which he switched between Arabic and Hausa language, Shekau queried why the president was mute when Muslims around the world and in Nigeria were killed and dared him to find his location, saying he was right within the FCT.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The video ended with footage of the destruction at the scene of the recent Nyanya explosion.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“You (Jonathan) should know that we are worshipping God, that is why we are always victorious in all our attacks; if you are that wise and knowledgeable, why is it still very difficult for you to locate where we are up till date despite the fact that we are within Nigeria. Look at us, we are right within your city (Abuja), and you don’t even know how to find us. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><a href="http://ift.tt/1sPNSQv"><img alt="soldiers-taking-cover-at-SSS-HQs-today.-Photo-Yoosooph" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-194799" height="240" src="http://ift.tt/1sPNSQv" width="240"/> </a> </p><br /><br/><br /><p>Amnesty International Friday urged the Nigerian security forces to disclose the whereabouts of a man who was arrested after tweeting pictures of an attempted jail break at the headquarters of the intelligence agency.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Nigerian security forces should immediately disclose the whereabouts and legal status of Yusuf Siyaka Onimisi,” said the rights group’s Netsanet Belay in a statement.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“If he is in detention, the Nigerian authorities must either charge him with a recognisable criminal offence or release him immediately,” Amnesty said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The attempted jail break at the headquarters of the Directorate of State Services on March 30 sparked a gun battle that killed 21 detainees, the intelligence agency said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Onimisi, who works for a national electricity firm, has been arrested and held incommunicado for 11 days, his family said on Thursday.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The head of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, told AFP that his office was investigating the alleged disappearance of the 32-year-old man.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“He has been arrested for 11 days without any information being given to the family … . The family has been kept in darkness. If you are holding him or if there is to be a sentence of death, then tell the family,” Amnesty quoted Sanusi Onimisi, the man’s brother, as saying.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>National security concerns have been cited in the past as justification for arresting people who publish sensitive material.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

She also used the opportunity to appeal to mothers to take full advantage of the immunization exercise to immunize their wards and children against preventable diseases.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“There are always issues between employers and employees but we must continually engage ourselves in dialogue with a view to agreeing on some of the grey areas; the sanctity of life especially, those lives in our care must be uppermost in our minds, regardless of our grievances,” she said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>She noted that records have shown that the most cost effective and intervention strategy to eradicate these diseases is through immunization, adding that the Lagos State Government and its partnering agencies have made arrangements to ensure that all children in the state are immunized.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Semiu Surakat, thanked the state government for identifying the local government for the flag-off of the programme.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said the national immunization days are important in the calendar of the local government, noting that parents and guardians within the local government have been mobilized to ensure they follow the immunization programmes, prepare their children’s future by ensuring they are immunized against all forms of deformity during the exercise.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He appealed to all stakeholders to ensure that more sensitization is made for the benefit of the public and ensure that the programme achieves its objective.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>
