So, why are you an exception?</div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'> </div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'>“Henceforth, no matter who you are including myself, that nobody goes into prison with telephones. And so, as you are going from here, create a meeting platform where all the officers that work in the prisons as they walk into prisons, they submit their phones and collect them when they close.</div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'> </div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'>“Secondly, it means that you have one month to recover all the phones in the custody of inmates across the prison formations. <script type="text/javascript"> <script size='468x60' src='http://srvpub.com/adServe/banners?tid=22528_31474_5' type='text/javascript'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google_ad_client = "ca-pub-6630608044863529"; google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p>A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Nasir El-Rufai, on Sunday expressed his concern over the act of granting state pardon to convicted political office-holders.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>El-Rufai, while delivering a lecture on the topic “Corruption, and the Challenge of Good Governance’’ at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), said such act of pardon would encourage corruption.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lecture was organised by “The Companion”, an association of Muslim men in business.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>El-Rufai said giving state pardon to convicted political office-holders would encourage many corrupt Nigerians.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said it would also particularly give the youths the impression that corruption was something good and which people should get involved in.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Pardoning convicted corrupt persons in Nigeria is sending a wrong message to the young ones,” the former FCT Minister said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>El-Rufai said the nation was undergoing an interesting time, particularly with the insecurity situation in the northern part of the country.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He however said every concerned citizen should push for a society that is good for all.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The former Minister pointed out that the insecurity situation in Nigeria was as a result of the failure of intelligence agencies which were also affected by corruption.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>El-Rufai said corruption would always affect good governance when it was not checked, saying it had already affected basic societal necessities, such as electricity, infrastructure, water and security, among others.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said the root of corruption should be tackled, by improving the welfare package for members of the police force, a good wage for public servants, and punishment for corrupt persons.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We should make it difficult for corruption to be consummated by reducing cash going round. We should remove what can push a honest person to corruption,’’ the former FCT Minister said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The President of “The Companion”, Mr Misbaodeen Oyefesor, said the lecture’s theme was due to the association members’ concern regarding the increasing rate of corruption in Nigeria.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“There is the need to check the spread,” he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Oyefesor said in spite of efforts of governments at all levels, it seems nothing was happening to check the trend.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>On the Boko Haram insurgency in the north, he condemned the sect’s activities and described them as a barbaric group, saying his association has no relationship with them.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Oyefesor called on the political class to avoid violence during elections, while he commended INEC for a free and fair election in Ekiti.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I want to urge INEC to do the same for the 2015 general elections,” he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The association president called on Nigerians to support the government to fight insurgency in the country.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Chairman of the occasion, Otunba Lateef Owoyemi, advised that studies in how to avoid and stem corruption should be introduced in schools.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“This will help to check the trend from the grass roots,” he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>NAN reports that the UNILAG main auditorium was filled to capacity by Muslim men and women.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>These included the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Rahamon Bello, and Muiz Banire, a former Lagos State Commissioner for Environment.[NAN]</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

It will help us to ensure the availability of vaccines and timely delivery.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“It is my hope that with the loan, polio will be interrupted this year,” Chukwu said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said Nigeria would not be the last country to eradicate polio, pointing out that government had taken steps to ensure that all children were immunised.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Nigeria Country Representative, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Dr Mairo Mandara said the country had made progress in polio eradication due to political support shown at every level.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The loan will provide financial stability to the programme by fully funding oral polio vaccine for about 18 months from the time it is executed.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mandara also lauded religious and traditional leaders in the country for the crucial part they played in polio eradication.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>She said the foundation would repay the loan to the Japanese government with the principal and interest after project execution.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The loan is also intended to be a useful tool for the Federal Government to help improve immunisation coverage rates in areas that need additional support to stop transmission.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“After Nigeria has executed the loan agreement, the foundation will commit to repay the loan to Japan on behalf of Nigeria if the required immunisation coverage rates are met,” Mandara said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Japan’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Ryuichi Shoji said their financial contribution would build a robust bridge for Nigeria to achieve the goal of polio eradication.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said the loan of $85 million would have preferential interest rate of 0.2 per cent.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The loan will be utilised for procurement of polio vaccines for children under five years of age,” he said, noting that, Japan has partnered Nigeria for 14 years on polio.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“As long as a single child remained infected, children in all countries were at risk of polio.”</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

I don’t remember much, but I do remember being initially grateful for the all the hands that helped push me home and into my dorm room that night.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />I woke up in my lofted bed, and there were about a half dozen people in my room hanging out. My clothing was on the floor, and I felt an invisible miasma of shame engulfing me. Maybe it’s the hindsight talking, but I had a premonition that something wicked was coming. Maybe it’s because my future rapist was in the room. My eyes retreated into orbit again.<br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br />I had met her at the beginning of freshman year. My dorm room was in one of three male-occupied floor towers. I was lonely and glad for any friends I could get. I had a long-distance girlfriend; she had a long-distance boyfriend, and being able to have someone to share these things with shunted the pain. She was nice to me.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />And then she raped me.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />When I regained my bearings that night, my friends were gone and gravity was a mystery to me. She was in my bed, and I couldn’t tell if my back was facing the ceiling or the mattress, nor could I identify whose sweat belonged to whom. All I could feel was pressure, and after coming to my senses I put together what was happening. I felt impotent to stop it.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The morning that followed came with a paradigm shift. I was embarrassed and shellshocked and refused to believe it had happened, even though she was next to me when I regained consciousness. As a man, I felt especially compelled to hide what happened to me, lest I come off as weak.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />I asked her what had happened, and she confirmed all the details, which included consent and desire that seemed impossible to fish out of the folds of my brain.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />At that point, I decided to own it. Because if I owned it, it wasn’t embarrassing and it didn’t strip me of my masculinity. I had never heard of this happening to anybody else, and researching it online made my problem seem more real to me, which was frightening.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Panic flooded me and all I wanted to do was scrub my soul of everything that was demoralizing and demasculinizing about the experience. My interpretation became consensual sex, and I proclaimed that sex was awesome, even though I had no clue what it felt like at all. I bragged to my neighbors, who could hear her wailing through paper-thin walls. The more I bragged, the more the agony subsided.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />I was steadfast to make the loss of my virginity mean something. I immediately broke it off with my long-distance girlfriend. And my coping mechanism was to make my rapist my partner, giving purpose and intent to something horrible.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The path to admitting to other people what actually happened to me was a tricky one. But as I matured years after it occurred, I was able to grasp that my concept of masculinity was childish, and only rooted in weird stereotypes.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Being able to admit that I was raped brought my life into high-definition levels of clarity. Especially when everybody’s response was the same—an awkward pause, followed by a facial expression that goes hand-in-hand with being upset.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />And then I pulled the trigger and I ended it.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />One week after we broke up, she resorted to violence. When the cops came to our apartment and she refused to let them in after they threatened to break down the door, I felt like I was getting my first dose of reality in nearly two years. Days later, she was in another apartment a few football fields away. From that point on, I only saw her two more times on campus before fleeing Ohio.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />While I’m able to talk about what happened to me 10 years later, make no mistake: being raped seriously damaged me and had a profound impact on how I engaged with women years after it happened.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />While it’s not something I think about every day, it passes through my mind every week through various triggers. It’s never going to leave me, and I’d like it to stay that way, as I’m not prepared to reject the strong person I’ve become throughout all of this.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />To every man out there who has experienced something similar: You are not weak and you are not a boy. You were not bested or conquered; you were taken advantage of in a way that precludes all gender conventions. Recovering from rape is gender agnostic: it all begins with being able to admit what happened to you.
