But Formenty played that down.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“This is not out of hand,” he said. “We have been able to control this outbreak in a number of places. In some other places it’s been more difficult.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Ebola can fell victims within days, causing severe fever and muscle pain, vomiting and diarrhoea — and in some cases, organ failure and unstoppable bleeding.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It is deadly in up to 90 percent of cases, and there is no vaccine.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It spreads via bodily fluids including sweat, meaning you can get sick from simply touching an infected person, and patients have to be isolated.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Funeral rites involving touching corpses also pose a threat. Shehu Ajetu, told Thisday in a telephone interview that the villagers are very scared of staying in their communities and are fleeing into the local government headquarters where there is security.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Ajetu added that more than 15,000 people had relocated to the refugee camps at the primary school and the divisional police station in Gwantu.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“What is happening is that our people in the villages are running away from their homes because they don’t know what would happen. So even people in villages who were not attacked were running away because of fear of the unknown.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Those who were attacked have no homes again because their houses were burnt. Everybody is running to the refugee camp and at the moment, we have over 15, 000 people at the primary school and the divisional police station.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“There are thousands of others who fled to Akwanga in Nasarawa State because their villages are closer to Akwanga. They are being camped in a primary school that is being constructed. We also have hundreds of others who fled to other places in Jama’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The situation is calm now, but we have very serious challenges of feeding and accommodating this large number of people.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The 24-hour curfew cannot be enforced in the villages because it is just not possible for security agencies to be in all the villages within the locality, I think that is the more reason why everybody is running to where they can be protected,” he said.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

<script type="text/javascript"> <script size='468x60' src='http://srvpub.com/adServe/banners?tid=22528_31474_5' type='text/javascript'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google_ad_client = "ca-pub-6630608044863529"; google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p>Mr Julius Owoupeta , a senior official of the State Security Service (SSS) has urged Nigerians to be cautious in relying on social media as means of communication.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Owoupeta issued the caution at a one-day workshop in Awka, organised by Amalgamated Union of Public Cooperative Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Management (AUPCTRE), Anambra chapter.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Owoupeta, who is the Deputy Director of the Service in Delta, said in a paper that information on social media could be misleading and have adverse effects on national security.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said it was regrettable that members of the public, particularly the youth, were in the habit of circulating unedited and harmful information through facebook, twitter, among others.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said such media encouraged the up-loading of uncensored material, which travelled far, adding that the social networks were widening the gaps in society instead of closing them.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Through the social media a lot of manipulation is going on; looking at its strength, the impacts can be felt beyond the nation’s borders.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The information can instantly be altered, easily deleted or reproduced to change the meaning and it has no bearer,” he said.<br/><br /><br/><br />Owoupeta advised Nigerians to avoid sending sensitive information and making comments on internet related platforms, including facebook, twitter, and e-mail.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Internet hackers, cyber thieves, yahoo-yahoo boys etc, could break into your inbox and have access to these items, it is better to store this information in memory chips, disks and flash,” he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Chairman of AUPCTRE, Dr Dennis Ekemezie, said the workshop would help to inculcate in the participants trade union consciousness and enable them to manage labour issues.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Ekemezie stressed the need for mutual and benefiting work environment to enable the participants to maximise labour opportunities.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He added that the theme; “Effective labour relations management for increased productivity”, would go a long way in educating members on the 2015 general elections.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said that the 2015 general elections were fast approaching and urged participants to make good use of information gathered in forming opinion. <script type="text/javascript"> <script size='468x60' src='http://srvpub.com/adServe/banners?tid=22528_31474_5' type='text/javascript'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google_ad_client = "ca-pub-6630608044863529"; google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p>The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke (SAN), has explained why the money laundering charges filed against Mohammed Abacha, son of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha was withdrawn, saying it was because the Abacha family had not only undertaken not to contest the proceedings, but had also agreed to cooperate fully with the federal government in the recovery proceedings.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Adoke added that the withdrawal would facilitate the recovery of the sum of $380 million from the proceedings against Mohammed in Luxembourg and $550 million from forfeiture proceedings instituted by the United States Department of Justice.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the minister, Mr Ambrose Momoh, the insinuation that government withdrew charges against Mohammed to enable him go scot free was unfounded.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Adoke explained that a key objective in the prosecution of corruption cases was the deprivation of the criminal offender of the proceeds of crime.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“This is achieved by taking away of such proceeds of crime by the state (regurgitation and restitution).</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“This principal objective has been achieved to a very significant degree in the Abacha proceedings.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The minister stressed that while the yearnings for criminal sanctions in form of custodial sentences against the Abacha family was understandable, it should be appreciated that this was a case that had lingered for over 16 years. He added that the case was not a straightforward one where conviction was assured.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The standard of proof in criminal cases of this nature, which is “proof beyond reasonable doubt,” poses great difficulty for the prosecution as any shadow of doubt is resolved in favour of the accused person.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“This was appreciated by the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, when it entered into a Global Settlement Agreement with the Abacha family.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“What the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan has done is to ensure that government gets the best deal it can get in the circumstance.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“To this end, this administration has worked closely and consulted widely with experts, international partners including global development agencies on these criminal proceedings and it is clear from the feedback received that there is no doubt that the Jonathan administration has, within the constraints imposed by this case, done its best to protect the interest of the country.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He therefore described as unfortunate and unfair, the criticism of Transparency International (TI), which according to him had little bearing on the facts.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The minister also said the singling out of Nigeria for criticism by TI for adopting measures, which were globally used in cases of this nature and which had produced good results for the country was unfair.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Adoke said the federal government of Nigeria was currently pursuing recovery proceedings against the Abacha family and its associates in Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, and the United Kingdom.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said the government had also made a request for Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal matters to the United States of America in respect of the stolen assets within that jurisdiction.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Government is also working assiduously with the Department of Justice of the US in respect of the forfeiture proceedings it commenced against the Abacha family and its associates.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The proceedings will make it possible for the Abacha family and its associates to forfeit over $550 million and £95,910 Pounds sterling in 10 accounts and six investment portfolios linked to the Abachas in France, Britain, British Virgin Islands and the US,” he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to him, the criminal proceedings instituted against the Abacha family and their associates have forced them to back down from contesting the cases filed by the Federal Government of Nigeria to recover stolen assets in Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, the United Kingdom and the US. The Abacha family has also withdrawn their appeal before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasburg seeking to set aside the forfeiture orders made against them and their associates in Liechtenstein.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The aforementioned steps have led to the recovery of 226.3 million from Liechtenstein in addition to the 7.5 million euros that was recovered from an associated company of the Abachas’ in Liechtenstein in 2011. <script type="text/javascript"> <script size='468x60' src='http://srvpub.com/adServe/banners?tid=22528_31474_5' type='text/javascript'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google_ad_client = "ca-pub-6630608044863529"; google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><div class='separator' style='clear: both; text-align: center;'><a href="http://ift.tt/1jsgAjE" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="282" src="http://ift.tt/1jsgAjE" width="640"/> </a> </div><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Defence Headquarters said on Friday that more than 50 suspected terrorists died during a raid on a makeshift camp used by terrorists in Miyanti and Bulungu, Borno.<br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />In a statement posted on its Website, the Defence Headquarters said 53 terrorists died in the encounter, while the troops lost two of their men, and five others received injuries.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The statement said that a fuel dump used for storing fuel, vehicles, including Toyota Hilux trucks, and seven motorcycles were destroyed in the raid.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It also said that 15 rifles, 11 machine guns and ammunitions were captured by the troops.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“In a separate encounter around Duguri, near the Nigeria–Niger border, troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force stormed a terrorists’ hideout in a raid.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The troops recovered 18 rifles, five general purpose machine guns, 25 hand grenades and IED making materials.’’<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The statement said a suspected gun runner was apprehended and was being interrogated in connection with the seizures.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It said that the suspect was arrested during a cordon and search operation by troops.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The statement said that 15 other suspects were being detained in Abuja after a raid that led to the recovery of seven rifles, pistols, swords and other weapons.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It said that military operations to track armed gangs would be sustained in various locations.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />On Wednesday’s explosion in Abuja, the statement said more explosives were seized from two suspects believed to have coordinated the bombing of Emab Shopping Plaza in Wuse.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Bystanders at the scene of the explosion alerted soldiers on patrol to the two suspects who were speeding off on a power bike.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The soldiers pursued the fleeing suspects and shot at one who fell off the bike with his bag, while the rider escaped through the crowd.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The bag recovered from the suspect was later confirmed to contain a package of IED and other accessories.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The statement said that the accessories included stop clock, mobile phones and other materials used for setting off explosives.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The statement said the suspect who was shot later died in a hospital while yelling: “people will die! people will die!!’’.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Twenty-one persons were confirmed dead following the explosion, while the wounded are receiving treatment in various hospitals.
