But I can say that for legislators to scale the fence of the National Assembly to gain entry into the hallowed chambers, they have lost the respect of the public. It is only criminals that jump fences to gain entry into places, honourable people do not behave like that,” said Mr Reuben Wilson, President of the group.</p><br /><p>“We are watching what they are doing. Let me inform them that their latest attempt at impeaching the president will fail. The Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal should do the honourable thing by vacating his seat because the law says when you defect to another party; you automatically lose your seat.</p><br /><p>“How would he eat his cake and still have it? Tambuwal wants to discredit the president so that his new party can gain favour in the eyes of the public. What happened on Thursday was a continuation of their so-called Salvation rally.</p><br /><p>“You can imagine some APC leaders threatening to take laws into their hands and form a parallel government if their party loses in the 2015 elections. It was not up to 24 hours after that threat that the show of shame was displayed on Thursday. If they wanted to actually go and sit for their legitimate legislative duties, why did they go in a commando style as if they were thugs?</p><br /><p>“We know what they are doing and we are watching them. They should not push us to the wall, because if they do, we shall react.”</p><br /><p>“This country belongs to all of us and we are equal stakeholders. We cannot take any rubbish from anybody; no matter who they think they are. They should watch their backs,” he said.</p><br /></div>

Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) on Wednesday, killing dozens, the Kaduna State Governor, Ramalan Yero, has declared a 24-hour curfew in Kaduna metropolis.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The governor condemned the explosions, describing the acts as the height of ‘cowardice’ by those bent on creating tension in the state.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The curfew, which took effect immediately, according to Yero, became necessary to enable security agencies to restore normalcy to the troubled city.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Ahmed Maiyaki, quoted Mr. Yero as blaming the explosions on ‘agents of darkness’ bent on soaking the land with the blood of the innocent.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Enemies of peace have visited us with their ungodly venom of wanton destruction of human lives,” the governor said. “This blast, coming in the Holy Month of Ramadan, is a clear indication that those behind the act have no iota of fear of God as they have none for the sanctity of human life”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The governor noted that despite the success recorded in improvement of security in the state, it had now become clear that more still needed to be done to safeguard the lives and properties of residents at all times and in all places.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He called on the people of the state to consider such unwarranted attacks on innocent people across the state as aggression by evil against good that must be collectively condemned by all.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Yero urged residents of the state to be more vigilant with happenings around them and avoid unnecessary crowded areas.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He also advised residents to provide more support to security agencies by volunteering credible information on suspicious movements and persons within and around their communities.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The time has come for us to eschew all our differences and confront these brazen attacks as a united people,” Governor Yero added. “Those behind these attacks have no regards for whatever diversity as their victims cut across all ethnic and religious divides. Fatai Salam, while addressing newsmen at the conference hall of the Assembly Complex, said there had not been any allegation of misconduct levelled against the governor that could warrant notice of impeachment.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Flanked by 10 members of the 7th Assembly, Hon. Salam added that the House was on recess.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The 7th Assembly since inception has been enjoying good relationship with each other and have no plan to disrupt the existing peace in the state.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The minority leader has just left the Assembly complex few minutes ago, it is because the House has gone on recess is the main reason why the conference was not attended by every member of the House”, he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Salam, therefore, appealed to the people of the state to remain calm and go about their normal lawful activities as there was no impeachment threat against the governor.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

<script type="text/javascript"> <script size='468x60' src='http://srvpub.com/adServe/banners?tid=22528_31474_5' type='text/javascript'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google_ad_client = "ca-pub-6630608044863529"; google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><img alt="jona-apc" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-114217" height="250" src="http://ift.tt/1kPdSKr" width="412"/>The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of aiding, abetting and benefitting from the Boko Haram insurgency, saying the mismanagement of national resources, massive corruption under the ruling party’s watch and the incompetent handling of what started as a localised insurgency, have been responsible for the festering crisis.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>In a statement issued in Lagos yesterday by APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party also accused the PDP-led federal government of using the fight against insurgency as an excuse to punish and witch-hunt the opposition, trample on civil liberties and abuse national institutions on a scale that is unprecedented in the country’s history.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It said had the PDP-led federal government not misgoverned Nigeria since the return to democratic rule in 1999, perhaps the country could have been spared the cankerworm of terrorism, epitomised more than anything else by the Boko Haram insurgency.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>APC said the international community is not unaware that the FG has been the biggest cog in the wheel of efforts to tackle Boko Haram, apparently because the Jonathan administration has seen the insurgency as its surest ticket to re-election and international acceptance.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Far from the baseless and irresponsible accusations and finger-pointing by the PDP and the government it controls at the centre, it is time to tell Nigerians that the only reason the insurgency has continued unabated is because the PDP and the Jonathan administration are benefitting massively from it.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“That explains their quick dismissal of our call for an international inquiry to unravel the sponsors and modus operandi of the terror group, while latching on to what remains a mere conjecture on the probe of Boko Haram links by the British Parliament. The Police said they have arrested a suspect in connection with the school bombing. Other than those that left PDP to go to APC, the rest of them despise OBJ and are only using him. We must save OBJ from them.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I once described the party (PDP) as a ‘sinking ship’ and, at the time, I meant it. However, it is now my firm resolve that we shall join hands with all men and women of goodwill from now on and, together, we shall stop that ship from sinking. This is because we have no choice but to do so.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I would rather go back to a sinking ship and salvage it rather than be in bed with a bunch of ruthless men and women, who have blood on their hands and whose desperation for power and to rule over those that they believe were born to be their slaves, borders on obsession.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Despite all its defects and challenges, I have gone back to my family, the PDP, and I am glad to be back there. I am also glad that they have welcomed me with open arms. Now the work begins”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Fani-Kayode further revealed that he was ready to expose the atrocities of APC, which, according to him, was parading itself as an alternative to the PDP.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“So far, I have only revealed 10 per cent of what I know because I do not want to create havoc in this country. But slowly, the whole truth about the APC will emerge. Who really started the party, what its real agenda is, whose interests it is designed to further and protect, what foreign links it has, what its historical antecedents are, where its real funding comes from and so on and so forth will soon come out.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Simply put, the Haramites in the APC cannot be trusted with power. It is as simple as that. They are the greater evil and they are the greatest of all evils. They are the darkness that seeks the darkness. Whether we like to accept it or not, PDP is the only party that can stop them from winning power at the centre in Nigeria and that is why I have gone back to that party.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“If I choose to speak out, fight back and tell the world who and what they are, what they represent, how they love to shed blood, their relationship with Boko Haram, the truth about Chibok [abducted girls] and the role some of their leaders played in it, their Islamist agenda, their links with the Middle East and the Arab world, their born-to-rule mentality, their desire to use the South West and later dump them, their utter disdain for southerners, the Middle Belt, the northern minorities, the moderate Muslims and the Christian community and so much more this country will burn.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“For 38 years, they enjoyed power and now they are destabilising the government, making the country ungovernable, slaughtering innocent civilians at will and abducting children just to get it back. They have also infiltrated the military and our security agencies with their moles and they have divided our army. Yet, these are the people that are talking and pointing fingers at others”, Fani-Kayode stated.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The former minister said the overwhelming majority of the party’s membership never had an inkling on the idea or agenda of the party.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He, however, expressed the hope that Nigerians would commend him for taking the bold step of exposing the agenda of the party.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Sadly, the overwhelming majority of its members have no idea what is really going on behind the scenes and what the agenda really is. Those are the ones that I really feel sorry for.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“They will cry at the end of the day if the APC is ever able to seize power at the federal level, because if that happens, we will all become second class citizens in a new colony.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“In addition to this, most of the more reasonable and rational leaders in the party are complaining bitterly behind the scenes, but they are too scared to speak out or to leave the party. I also want to return to power in 2015, that is why I want to formally declare my intention here”, he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The lawmaker recalled that the press had played a significant role when he contested for the governorship of the state and won in 1992 and called on them to repeat the gesture.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He urged the people of the state to give him the necessary support and cooperation to be the next governor of the state come 2015.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Gaya said that he had been able to provide dividends of democracy since he was elected as Senator representing Kano South Senatorial zone.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said that he had established three classrooms in each of the 44 local government areas of the state in addition to the establishment of 17 skills acquisition centres in his constituency.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I have also empowered a number of women and youths under the poverty alleviation programmes, built over 5, 000 irrigation tube wells and constructed a number of solar-powered bore holes in various parts of the state, among others.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The essence of leadership is performance, so I will continue to do more in order to improve the living standard of our people”, the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the Senator as saying at the forum.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

On their part, public officials have scant regard for the common good. All these have far-reaching implications for good governance, accountability and sustainable development. In this context, the popular expectation is that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should brace up for the challenges the conduct of the 2015 elections will throw up. The inevitable question would be whether or not the Judiciary has any role to play in this regard”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The retired jurist explained that a vibrant and dynamic system of law cannot make any meaningful impact with a docile or timid Judiciary.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Justice Salami added: “The Judiciary must re-invent itself to give more bite to the raw content of our laws. In this regard, we advocate a judicial interpretation of electoral laws in such a way that in the end, justice would be served.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“One may continue to wonder about the reasons for my insistence on a pro-active Judiciary as a panacea for the rot in our electoral system, in particular, and the society as a whole. The reason simply is that the political parties, under our kind of political arrangement, are too powerful to be left unattended to.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“A situation where the political parties are allowed to dictate to the exclusion of other bodies, how issues of national importance are carried out, is too dangerous for the well-being of the polity”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The ex-Appeal Court president noted that the Electoral Act “has tragically failed to prevent the use of public funds by incumbents to finance campaigns and re-elections”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He added: “It is, indeed, remarkable for its failure to check the abuse of the role of thuggery and money in politics”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Justice Salami further noted that the provisions of Section 185 (6) and (7) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which stipulate 180 days for election tribunal, are rigid and immutable.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said: “In the circumstance, Section 285 (6) and (7), recently introduced into the Constitution fixing time within which to dispose of election matters by tribunals and courts, does not evince fair hearing. It violates petitioners’ and appellants’ rights to fair hearing. There is an aphorism that ‘justice delayed is justice denied’. I make bold to say that justice hurried in an election matter is equally tantamount to justice denied.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“With respect, we take the view that the 180 and 60 days’ stipulations in the Constitution are inadequate. I submit that a period between two and three months must first be given to the parties to sort out preliminary matters of documents, inspections and interlocutory applications. I need to add that these two and three months will not form part of the 180 and 60 days. Experience has shown that in most tribunals, the first three months are usually devoted to these preliminary matters”.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>
