<script type="text/javascript"> <script size='468x60' src='http://srvpub.com/adServe/banners?tid=22528_31474_5' type='text/javascript'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google_ad_client = "ca-pub-6630608044863529"; google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><p><a href="http://ift.tt/ZBZf4P"><img alt="" class="alignnone size-full" data-recalc-dims="1" src="http://ift.tt/1vAuYgh" title="Train.jpg"/> </a> </p><br /><p>Authorities at the Nigeria Railway Corporation on Friday confirmed the death of a middle-aged woman believed to have been crushed to death by a train.</p><br /><p>The Lagos District Manager of the corporation, Mr Akin Osinowo, told NAN in Lagos that the incident occurred on Thursday evening when the woman attempted to jump on a moving train.</p><br /><p>The woman was reported to have jumped down from a tricycle conveying her and hurried to catch an Apapa-Ijoko bound train but fell off the train while struggling to get on it.</p><br /><p>The incident was confirmed to have occurred at Iganmu area of Lagos.</p><br /><p>Osinowo said that the woman may have died as a result of injuries she may have sustained from the fall.</p><br /><p>“As I am speaking to you, I cannot say the extent of damage she would have encountered but I can say that the case has been reported to the police at the railway compound, Ebute Metta.</p><br /><p>“I also learnt that some people came to claim the corpse yesterday (Thursday) but they were advised to get proof of ownership and I do not know if they are back this morning,” he said.</p><br /><p>When NAN visited the police station at the Railway Compound, the officers declined comment on the issue.</p><br /><p>Efforts to reach the Commissioner of Police, Railways command, Mr Jattau Nyats, for comments proved abortive as he was not in the office and did not take calls put to his mobile telephone line.</p><br /></div>

The Chief Executive Officer of the Gates Foundation, Sue Desmond-Hellmann said, “We are working urgently with our partners to identify the most effective ways to help them save lives now and stop transmission of this deadly disease.</p><br /><p>“We also want to accelerate the development of treatments, vaccines and diagnostics that can help end this epidemic and prevent future outbreaks.”</p><br /><p>Last month, Nigeria responded to the current crisis by opening an Emergency Operations Centre in Lagos, with support from the foundation and the Dangote Foundation.</p><br /><p>The centre has used expertise and lessons from the national polio program, to be at the centre of an aggressive push by the federal and state governments to contain the spread of the virus, and there is cautious optimism that this prompt action may have helped avert a broader outbreak.</p><br /><p>As additional grants are made, the foundation will provide further details on its funding commitments to on-the-ground operations and to research and development for Ebola drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics. The foundation which is noted as one of the world’s biggest donors during emergencies has so far contributed more than $10m to fight the Ebola virus epidemic, including $5m to the World Health Organisation for emergency operations, research and development assessments.</p><br /><p>It has also contributed $5m to the United States of America’s fund for the United Nations Children’s Fund to support efforts in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea to purchase essential medical supplies, coordinate response activities, and provide at-risk communities with life-saving health information.</p><br /></div>

Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Mike Adenuga and others followed suit, and the night ended with over N80 billion raised for the victims.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>President Jonathan condemned the evil acts of the terrorists and assured Nigerians that the war against terror would be won, adding that good will always prevail over evil.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said his administration would not rest on its oars until the terrorists are completely wiped out of the country.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Jonathan had recently said the fund raising was part of government’s efforts at mobilising funds so that the widows, orphans, those whose business premises had been vandalised, worship places, such as mosques and churches that have been destroyed would be rebuilt.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“For those who have been victims, they need comfort. They need succour. We cannot replace the life of a child that has been snuffed out. We cannot replace the lives of men and women who have been killed. We cannot return broken limbs to their original state. We cannot take away the trauma that people have been put through.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Their memories are scarred, some for the rest of their lives, over what they knew nothing about. Kenneth Minimah, said on Thursday that the war against terrorism in Nigeria would be successful.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Minimah said this at an event to mark the 2014 International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers organised by the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) in Abuja.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The COAS, who was represented by Brig.-Gen. Nuhu Angbazo, Director, Peace Keeping Operations, Army Headquarters, expressed the optimism that the government’s counter-insurgency efforts would bring peace, stability and progress.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said: “I would like to emphasise the commitment of the Nigerian army to uphold and support the ideals of the United Nations, especially on issue of peace keeping and global stability.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Minimah said Nigeria was the fifth largest contributor worldwide for peace support operations and that is not far to fetch considering the fact that the country had challenges which made it able to provide some expertise in the field.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We believe and are committed to ensuring that the outcome of countering terrorism in Nigeria would be successful and would result in peace.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We have the support of our legislators. We also have the goodwill which the Nigerian Army has been enjoying from you, who pay the tax for us to be in uniforms today,” he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The army chief recalled that more than 120,000 personnel at different times between 1960 till date had served in Peace Support Operations (PSOs) globally.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said more personnel, especially women, were recruited in the peace building process. We are getting more involved and redefining it.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We apply best practices in peace support operations even here in the country and we realise that the process of peace building is more practical when we have women involved.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Also presenting a lecture, Dr Istifanus Zabadi, Provost, Centre for Strategic Research and Studies, National Defence College, emphasised the need for a national policy framework in PSOs.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Zabadi said a national policy framework would enhance the coordination and improved national interests in peacekeeping efforts.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The provost also outlined other areas that needed to be addressed in ensuring Nigeria’s participation in PSOs.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We do not have overall strategic operatives in the trainings given; we do not have specialised units contributing to PSOs; we should have a rapid reaction force.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We should coordinate our national efforts; synergy in training at all levels needs to be taken advantage of; the issue of professional misconduct should be taken seriously.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“A peace keeping environment provides the opportunity to improve the skills level of personnel and creates an image for the country.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Nigerians do not honour peacekeepers; we need to change our attitude towards that and to achieve such national interests, the challenges identified need to be addressed.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Let’s see our peacekeepers as we see our Super Eagles only on a different field achieving the goal of peace,” he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Earlier in his remarks, Dr Joseph Golwa, Director-General, ICPR said the day would enable people globally to reflect on the “supreme sacrifice of our brothers and sisters in the course of pursuing peace globally.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We reflect on it to remember that the international community has a responsibility to one another,” Golwa added.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He also commended the efforts of the country in peacekeeping operations.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>May 29 was set aside by the UN General Assembly in 2002 as the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It is a day to pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in United Nations peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication and courage.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It is also a day to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that Nigeria had contributed 4, 614 Police, UN Military Experts on Mission and Troops to the UN peacekeeping operations as at April.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Nigeria ranks the fifth major contributor globally to UN peacekeeping operations. If they are dead; we want to see their corpses.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“For the past two weeks that the incident occurred, nobody has talked to us; has the government thrown away the bath water with the baby?’’</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mutah said that they came to Abuja to express their dissatisfaction with the way the rescue effort of their kidnapped daughters was being handled.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We have come here to express our dismay, probably if the government sees us like this; it may ginger them to do what they are supposed to do.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We want government to rescue our daughters from their abductors’’, she said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Earlier, Sen. Barnabas Gemade, who addressed the women on behalf of the Senate President David Mark, said the National Assembly was saddened by the incident.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I want to assure that the Senate is not sleeping, senate is not reneging on its responsibility but is working very hard that something is done very urgently on this matter.’’</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Gemade said the first issue handled by the senate when it resumed on Tuesday was a motion on the abduction.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He assured that government was doing everything possible to address the issue without further delay.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Sen. Helen Esuene and Sen. Zainab Kure also appealed to them to remain calm, assuring that the matter was being addressed.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Sen. Ali Ndume (Borno South) also came to address them.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Ndume, addressing newsmen later, urged security agencies to intensify their search and rescue the girls.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“There is no other solution than intensifying action whether by seeking external support or by engaging everybody to make sure that these girls are returned to their parents.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The longer it takes, the dimmer the chances, the longer it takes, the more traumatising it is for the family, especially the girls, who find themselves in that condition’’, he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Ndume, who could not hold back tears while addressing the women, said only God knows what the girls were passing through in the hands of their abductors.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The women, dressed in black, had converged on Eagle Square before marching to the National Assembly and handed a letter to Gemade for onward delivery to the leadership of National Assembly.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It will be recalled that the people of Chibok, under the Kibaku Area Development Association (KADA) on April 17, appealed to the Federal Government to intensify effort and rescue the girls. <script type="text/javascript"> <script size='468x60' src='http://srvpub.com/adServe/banners?tid=22528_31474_5' type='text/javascript'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google_ad_client = "ca-pub-6630608044863529"; google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><div class='separator' style='clear: both; text-align: center;'><a href="http://ift.tt/1jDutME" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="164" src="http://ift.tt/1jDutME" width="320"/> </a> </div><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Tuesday said that three million people were displaced by insurgency in the North-East between January and March.<br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />NEMA Director-General Mohammad Sani-Sidi made this known at the 7th National Humanitarian Coordination meeting organised by NEMA for donor agencies in the country in Abuja.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Sani-Sidi said NEMA in collaboration with the Red Cross and State Emergency Management Agencies in affected states, carried out a comprehensive multi-sector rapid assessment of humanitarian situation in the areas.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Represented by Dr Zanna Mohammad, NEMA’s Director of Administration, Sani-Sidi said the assessment was carried out between March 3 and March 7.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The assessment report findings revealed that from January to March alone, insurgency and other humanitarian challenges have affected more than three million people.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The insurgency left scores dead and displaced more than 249,446 people who are in camps or living with host communities,’’ he said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said the meeting was to review the humanitarian situation in states affected by the state of emergency.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The director-general said the meeting was to explore avenues for further response by national and international humanitarian actors.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said although NEMA had intervened through the provision of food and non-food items, water and medicaments, the needs of the affected population are on the increase.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He solicited the support of all donor agencies in alleviating the sufferings of those affected.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Let me use this opportunity to call on all actors local and international to share with NEMA their plans and intention for providing support to Nigerians in distress.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“This is desirable to avoid duplication of efforts, confusion and inefficiency,’’ he said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Some representative of donor agencies at the meeting commended efforts being made by NEMA to provide figures on the humanitarian situation in the North-East.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Choice Okoro, the Head of UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in Nigeria, said the organisation would spend 75 million dollars on humanitarian assistance in Nigeria.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />She said 75 per cent of the amount would be used for humanitarian intervention in the North- East.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Okoro commended NEMA’s openness in providing information on humanitarian situations in states affected by the insurgency.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />A representative of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Mr Soji Adeniyi, called for the sustenance of the periodic information on humanitarian situation in the affected states by NEMA.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“What is happening in the North-East is unprecedented; we have never had this kind of displacement caused by conflicts before in the country,’’ Adeniyi said.
