The Defence Headquarters on Thursday faulted media reports that Boko Haram insurgents had surrounded Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.















The military said in a comment posted on its twitter handle, @defenceinfong, that the report were clearly intended to cause panic in the city and the country.







It was stated in the tweet that the security cordon around Maiduguri had been upgraded to handle any security emergency in the city.







The military, which described the report as ‘alarmist’, said the claims were unnecessary in view of the arrangement and the level of security preparedness in the city.







However it urged the citizens to be vigilant and go about their lawful businesses.







The tweets read in part, “Alarmist report on foreign and online media on Maiduguri is clearly intended to cause panic in the city and the nation.







“All facets of security arrangements for the defence of Maiduguri have been upgraded to handle any planned attack or attempt to disrupt the city’s prevailing peace.







“This kind of alarmist report is uncalled for in view of the efforts and alertness.







“Citizens are nevertheless enjoined to remain vigilant as they go about their lawful business.” .







The military also assured Nigerians that the situation in Mubi, Michika, Bazza, Gulak, Gwoza, Bama, Gamboru Ngala and other parts of the North-East, which have witnessed pronounced Boko Haram activities, were being stabilised through continuing aerial and ground operations.
