Live bullets were unleashed on protesting students. As we proceeded outside University of Lagos’s main gate, I narrowly escaped death as Akintunde Ojo, the young man standing next to me, was gunned down.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“With that incident, Obasanjo carved his name on marble as a villain of democracy. I did not mince words when opportunity presented itself in November of 1978, I pointed to his face saying, ‘This government possesses power without compassion, might without morality and strength without sight,” Bakare posited.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Man of God, who recently turned 60, further stated that students unionism has been hijacked by never do well people, stressing that the height of this fall was the conferment of the title of Defender of Democracy on Obasanjo in 2005 by student body.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Nevertheless, student unionism in Nigeria today is in a sorry state. Not only has it fallen from its pinnacle of intellectual doggedness and ideological astuteness, it has lost its activist steam and has become a mere appendage of ruling political parties and a tool in the hands of corrupt politicians.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The apotheosis of the perfidious degeneration of student unionism occurred in 2005 when NANS decorated General Obasanjo as a ‘Defender of Democracy'; yes the same Obasanjo who masterminded the brutal repression of unarmed students who were merely registering their displeasure over hike in fees,” Bakare stated.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He also condemned the role played by student leaders in the botched third term bid of the former President, “worse still, when progressives rose up against Obasanjo’s third term agenda in 2005, NANS shamelessly campaigned for Obasanjo’s life Presidency agenda.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“In essence, Obasanjo killed student’s unionism in Nigeria. As a military Head of State, he killed NANS by brutal repression and proscription. When Obasanjo returned as civilian President, he killed NANS and made it a shadow of itself, doing so this time by corrupting the body.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Upon the foundation of corruption of student unionism laid by Obasanjo, NANS has become weak and factionalised in subsequent administrations.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Bakare, however called on the student body to embark on journey of rebirth to return to the good old days of student activism, “then you must rid yourselves of cultism and other self destructive tendencies and take back student unionism from hoodlums and charlatans.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“You must restore student unionism to its glory days. One wonders where the huge funds went to,” APC said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />APC said while the government claimed to have created 1.9 million jobs in all of five years, the truth is that this is a mere tokenism.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”Even if the jobs they said they have created are not phantom, which we know they are, the situation on the ground is grim: 1.8 million Nigerians enter the job market every year, 5.3 million youth are unemployed and overall 20 million Nigerians are in the job market, and these are very conservative figures. Therefore, creating 1.9 million jobs over several years cannot amount to any achievement,” the party said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mohammed said while President promised Nigerians to eradicate corruption in all sectors of the economy, the facts on ground do not back the promise.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”Mr. President, under your watch, Nigeria’s rating by the global anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International has fallen. In 2009, Nigeria was rated 133 out of 180 countries, while in 2013, the country was rated 144 out of 177 countries.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”Mr.President, under your watch, the list of corruption cases begging to be handled is long: The missing $20b oil money, the Malabu oil scandal, the fuel subsidy scandal, the police pension heist, kerosene subsidy, and the sudden drop in the total amount realized from the Victims Support Fund from N80b to N60b. Plus the Ministers like Abba Moro, who presided over the swindling and death of job seekers, and Diezani Alison Madueke, who has presided over the most opaque oil industry in history, have rather received presidential cuddling instead of sanctions.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”Also, SURE-P, which was conceived to mitigate the hardships imposed on Nigerians by the needless increase in fuel prices, has now become a cesspit of corruption, a conduit for siphoning public funds and sure pit for money that could have ameliorated the suffering of ordinary Nigerians,” APC said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />On electricity, the party said the statement by President Jonathan that his Administration’s ”bold move” in the sector has put the country ”on the road to guaranteed regular power supply in the months ahead” is nothing but sheer deceit.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”Under the Jonathan Administration, Nigerians should not be in a hurry to throw away their generators. The facts on the ground show this to be true: While the FG has spent 533 billion naira (about $3billion) on power, at best Nigerians enjoy less than six hours of electricity per day, where they enjoy it at all, while spending over 800 billion naira annually to fuel their generators.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”Also, the 4,000MW of electricity being generated by Nigeria cannot guarantee stable power for 170 million people or propel the country towards industrialization. By comparison, South Africa, with less than a third of Nigeria’s population, generates over 44,000MW of electricity. There is therefore no way that Nigeria can enjoy a stable power supply with a meagre 4,000MW in power generation,” it said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />APC said the President’s claims that the country has met Millennium Development Goal 1, which is the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, flies in the face of the reality on the ground, adding: ”How can we claim to have eradicated extreme poverty and hunger when over 100 million Nigerians live on less than $2 per day, according to verifiable statistics?”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The party said with 51% of Nigerians, representing 90 million people, being illiterates, the establishment of 150 Almajiri schools has not even scratched the surface of the problem.<br/><br /><br/><br />It also accused the President of insensitivity to the plight of the people who voted him into office, as he would rather fly to Burkina Faso than visit Chibok, Buni Yadi and Potiskum, which are some of the places where dozens of youth have been killed and maimed by the Boko Haram terrorists in recent times.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”The President should not just be the Commander-in-Chief but also the Consoler-in-Chief. This a man who claims to be a friend of the masses.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“He is repainting the Governor’s Office, awarded by direct labour at the cost of N200m awarded to his blood brother.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“He told the Permanent Secretary, General Administration Department and Head of Service to find alternative entrance for civil servants, who work within the Governor’s office building because he doesn’t want to be meeting the ‘evil servants’ while coming in at the main entrance.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“This has been effected as civil servants in the Governor’s office now pass through the back to their offices. Yet this is the class of people he professed to be their friend before the election‎ and he has also cancelled the appointment of eight permanent secretaries that were legally appointed after passing necessary examinations according to the service rules.‎”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Fayose, who, however, spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, denied awarding the repainting contract to his brother as alleged by the APC.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Adelusi said the contract was awarded to an indigenous firm and the owner is not a brother to the governor.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He also denied the allegations that the marble contract was awarded to a non-indigenous firm.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We are not like APC that pauperised the people for the four years. All the contractors handling the job including the marble are from Ekiti. Dr Osanyintolu alleged that his team was impeded from the rescue site by overzealous onlookers, adding that some even turned aggressive. However, some of the submissions he made in his written deposition to the court were contradicted in his oral account during cross-examination by counsel to The SCOAN, Olalekan Ojo. Mr. Oke-Osanyintolu had submitted in his written deposition that members of the church frustrated his agency’s efforts in carrying out an effective rescue operation but later told the coroner in his oral account that he worked harmoniously with members of the church in ensuring a hitch-free operation.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />From another angle, the counsel to the church had pointed out the visibly conflicting account of the number of dead bodies reportedly evacuated by LASEMA. The LASEMA boss’ submission that he evacuated a total of 86 dead bodies contradicted the account of the Lagos State pathologist, Professor Obafunwa, who submitted earlier that the death toll reached 116. Joshua. The South-west Coordinator of The Citizens Club of Nigeria, Mr. Afolabi Olawale spoke to journalists and urged all conspirators against Joshua to desist as the consequences could be grave. He said, “We stand as mediators between the government and the citizens basically because of the gap between government policies and citizenry. From our observation, there is a deliberate plot to intimidate, oppress and frustrate the man of God, Prophet T.B. Joshua. This man has been doing God’s work, catering to the needs of many, especially the hopeless and destitute. Instead of troubling him, the government should follow his footsteps in tackling the problem of poverty that is ravaging the country”.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />In the same vein, a serving Nigerian soldier, who preferred anonymity, said he came down all the way from Port Harcourt to show solidarity to the prophet, whom he described as a father figure and a genuine man of God. According to him, “Prophet T.B. Joshua does not deserve hassles from any quarters because he has done too many wonderful things for this country. As I speak to you, I cannot count the multitude of favours I and my family have received from him. Her family in Kaduna State was throwing a party to celebrate her successful feat, and she decided to spend two weeks in Nigeria.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />While the celebration was on, she received an e-mail from her school informing her of a scholarship offer to proceed for her master’s degree.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />She accepted the offer.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The school then advised her to return to China as soon as possible.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Although Abigail never fell ill nor had contact with any of the hundreds of persons screened and in relevant cased treated for Ebola in Nigeria, she was made to suffer what she called ‘humiliation’ by Chinese authorities.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Although Abigail had been screened at the Nigerian airport for Ebola before her departure, on arrival at the Beijing airport in China, a list of passengers coming from countries affected by the Ebola outbreak was called.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />More than 3000 persons have died from the virus in West Africa, mainly from Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra-Leone. Dozens of Nigerians were later infected with the virus when Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian-American, brought the virus to the country. Mr. Sawyer and six other Nigerians have died from the Ebola in Nigeria.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />At the Beijing airport, Abigael’s ‘special’ group were told alight from the aircraft before other passengers and were taken for medical examination.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“When I arrived in China, the list of passengers coming from countries affected by Ebola was called by the medical officers in Beijing, China,” she said. “We were asked to come out of the plane before other passengers. We were taken to a room for examination. Body temperature was checked and few questions were asked, for example, do you have headache? Are you vomiting?”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />But that was not to be all. From there, she was isolated in a room where she was made to stay for 21 days – the incubation period of the virus.<br/><br /><br/><br />Ms. Afolabi was released on September 12 and has commenced her Masters programme. Her case is, however, just one of the many forms Nigerians suffer discrimination as a result of Ebola.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Nigeria’s contingent to Keeping Children Safe in Africa Conference, which held in Cape Town from September 3 to 5, were denied visa by the South African embassy due to Ebola.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />One of the key participants from Nigeria, Oge Chukwudozie of Save the Children Nigeria, who was to present a paper was among those denied entry. Someone else, a non-Nigerian, had to present her paper for her.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />When contacted on the efforts by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure there is a stop to the discrimination Nigerians suffer, its spokesperson, Ogbole Amedu-Ode, said he was on leave and could not make any comment.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Some government officials have, however, expressed concern with the apparent stigmatisation Nigerians go through due to the Ebola virus.<br/><br /><br/><br />One of such is Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Affairs.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa on September 6 noted that the stigmatization must be addressed before it gets worse, and as a lawmaker she would work with relevant government agencies to do the needful. She explained that in many instances, there were hardly any medical checks to ascertain the health conditions of such Nigerians.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The lawmaker cited another example of Adeseye Adeyemi, a Nigerian who decided to wed his Sri Lankan heartthrob in Sri Lanka; and wanted his Nigerian-based family to attend the reception.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa said the Adeyemi’s “were terribly treated by Sri Lankan authorities.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />She said all family members were quarantined in the Sri-Lankan airport lobby for about 18 hours with no access to food, water, or toilet facilities.
