He did not say I am not going to be the President in the next 30 days, let me just assent to it.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“He did not say whatever problem there is, let it be a problem that the Buhari administration will come to face.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“I commend him because he would ordinarily have signed it and say `I wash my hands off’ like Pilate.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“He still puts his thoughts together and said `this I refuse to do on these accounts’.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“To that extent, I commend his honesty, I commend his statesmanship,” he said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />However, Mr. Enang observed that the observations made by the President were coming late as the National Assembly had already passed the bill.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said that aides of the President ought to have pointed out the observations for amendment at the point of the public hearings.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“At this stage, we have gone through public hearing at different stages and this is a bill that passed through the National Assembly for three years.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“When we had the public hearings, those making these observations did not appear.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The President did not need to appear but the Attorney-General, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Accountant-General and all the other institutions ought to have appeared,’’ said the lawmaker.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said in view of the development, the National Assembly would hold close consultations with the President, to look at the observations made and vote on some of them.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The National Assembly on Thursday received a letter from the President, stating his refusal to assent to the Fourth Alteration Bill, 2015, due to some contentious issues.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />One of the contentious issues is contained in Section 45 A of the bill.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It guarantees the right to free basic education, which according to the letter is too open ended and should be restricted to government schools.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The president also said a section stipulating the right to free health should indicate that such privilege is available only at government facilities.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The president said some proposals by the Senate and the House of Representatives were clear violation of the doctrine of Separation of Powers.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />(NAN)<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>

text-align: center;'><a href="http://ift.tt/1zkfeiR" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="143" src="http://ift.tt/1zkfeiR" width="320"/> </a> </div><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>The Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday expressed confidence that it would effectively dislodge the All Progressives Party from power in four years time and reestabilsh its dominance in the nation’s political horizon.</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Olisa Metuh, the party`s National Publicity Secretary, stated this while speaking with journalists at the end of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) meeting.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The meeting was the first after it lost the presidential election to the APC.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He reassured PDP members across the country that the NWC had put machinery in place to re-engineer and re-focus the party, in keeping with the collective determination to consolidate its support base in states of the federation.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mr. Metuh said this was with a view to regaining power at the centre in 2019 “since it is obvious that the APC lacks what it takes to effectively lead the nation’’.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The party also alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was trying to destabilise it by planting moles within its fold.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We have noted that while some members have left our party, others have been asked to remain to cause disaffection and disharmony to destroy the spirit of unity in the party,’’ Mr. Metuh said.<br/><br /><br/><br />He said the NWC noted some divisive statements by certain elements within the party, who were being enticed by extraneous factors and other parties to cause disharmony in its ranks.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mr. Metuh cautioned against such comments and urged party members with genuine grievances to direct such through the appropriate channels within the party in line with the provisions of its Constitution.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said following the party’s perceived poor performance at the just-concluded elections; it would meet with its governors and senators-elect on April 21.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mr. Metuh said the party`s leadership would also meet with its members elected into the House of Representatives on April 22.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said the party`s state and zonal chairmen had been directed to come to the meeting with “list of irregularities in the conduct of the elections in their areas”.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mr. Metuh said this was to enable the party have a holistic view of what transpired during the elections and for it to come up with its final decision on its conduct.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said the NWC reviewed certain developments arising from the 2015 general elections and resolved to resist any attempt to subvert the people’s will.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The spokesman added that the NWC also resolved to resist any attempts to tamper with the democratic process with the aim of denying its candidates their well-deserved victory at the polls.<br/><br /><br/><br />He called on INEC and security forces to ensure that the elections in states where it was declared inconclusive were free, fair and credible.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The PDP spokesman said that every effort must be made to resist the intimidation and blackmail by the opposition aimed at manipulating the process in its favour.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He urged the party members, particularly those in states where elections had been rescheduled or declared inconclusive, not to despair, but remain focused.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mr. Metuh said the NWC would continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them until the party`s deserved victory was achieved.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said the PDP had already received reports from Nasarawa State on results from a ward collation center in Karu Local Government Area.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mr. Metuh alleged that in Karu, the PDP senatorial candidate was leading with about 8,000 but the votes were cancelled by INEC.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said INEC cancelled the result on the ground that the Collation Officer was unable to reconcile the figures from the ward.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mr. Metuh alleged that instead of ordering the collation officer to properly reconcile and re-present the figures, INEC reversed the 6,000 votes polled by the PDP candidate by hurriedly declaring the APC candidate winner with about 2,000 votes.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />This, according to him was in clear violation of the Electoral Act which did not provide for cancellation of results based on unreconciled figures at the collation level.<br/><br /><br/><br />(NAN)<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>

Muhammadu Buhari, on his victory at the March 28 presidential poll saying Nigerians are expecting a honest, purposeful and growth-oriented leadership, diversification of the economy and improvement of the economy from the APC-led Federal Government.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Publicity Secretary of Ekiti APC Elders Forum, Dr. Bayo Orire, who made the position of the group known on Friday also warned the military and the police against being used to hinder the lawmakers from carrying out their constitutional functions.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Condemning the military for turning back the 19 APC lawmakers from entering Ado-Ekiti, the state capital on Tuesday, Orire said the party’s elder body was concerned about an alleged open partisanship of officers and men of the Nigerian Army on the matter.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He also said the Police and the Army should not be watching helplessly for hoodlums to seize the whole state and interfere with the constitutional duties of the Assembly members.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Dr. Orire explained that the lawmakers should not be blamed for signing and forwarding an impeachment notice against Fayose saying a responsible House of Assembly was not expected to look the other way when the chief executive was overstepping his bounds.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />According to him, Fayose has violated the oath he swore to defend the Constitution and not do anything to infringe on the rule of law urging the people of the state not to see the action of the lawmakers as an attack on the governor but to save the state from impunity and sliding into an “irredeemable dictatorship.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The APC elders’ spokesman maintained that whatever constitutional action taken by the nineteen lawmakers remain legitimate, legal and binding since they have met and surpassed the two-third majority needed to remove an erring governor.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said: “The violence that paralyzed all activities on Tuesday was an incited, sponsored and planned reaction. The gruesome sign of a weak leader who only believes in the brawn and sheer brute force, a man of unmatched deceptive ploy.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“No matter what they do in form of killing, maiming, burning of cars, intimidation and harassment, the law must take its course and the truth must prevail.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The crux of the impeachment saga will emerge very soon, we all here when he emerged by sheer brute force and brigandage against all contending PDP aspirants.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“It was he that filled his own form on falsehood, he contested against the ten-year impeachment limit period. The whole world heard how he harassed judges in court premises and topped it all by forcing out 19 legislators and installed seven to rule.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“All other impeachable offences were committed by him so he would face the wrath of the law no matter what happens. Joshua.<br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The prophet had asked Okunnu to determine whether the witness summons served on him to appear before the coroner did not constitute an infringement on his right to fair hearing.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He also contended that the Lagos coroner, Magistrate O.A. Komolafe, had been extending the inquest into areas outside his statutory limit.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Okunnu, on Friday, fixed the ruling date after hearing the reply on point of law filed by Joshua’s lawyer, Chief Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), in response to the submission by Lagos State Government asking Okunnu to dismiss the prophet’s application.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Canvassing his argument in court, Fagbemi insisted that the coroner’s job stopped at the determination of what killed the victims of the building collapse.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He maintained that the coroner had no legal backing to inquire into the possible cause of the building collapse, wherein the about 116 victims perished.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He urged Okunnu to stop the coroner’s inquest from becoming “a floodgate for all manners of incursion under the guise of investigation.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“My Lord, I submit respectfully sir that even in the wider interpretation of the words ‘how’ and ‘manner’, none of those words can accommodate the situation here to allow the coroner to go beyond mere investigation as to the cause of death,” Fagbemi submitted.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He, therefore, urged the court to restrain the coroner from further acting in excess of his jurisdiction, in addition to an order declaring null and void such portion of the coroner’s inquest already conducted in excess of jurisdiction.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />But the Lagos state counsel, Karmardeen Bakare, had argued that the coroner’s job was not only to find the cause of death but also had the latitude to investigate issues pertaining to building approval, soil testing and materials used in the construction of the collapsed building.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“In doing this, he has all the powers of a magistrate to summon and compel the attendance of witnesses, including medical examiners, and require them to give evidence, produce documents or present other relevant materials,” Kamardeen added.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>
