Lawan Gwadabe, in 1988 during his NYSC passing out parade declaring that the military had caused great harm to the democratic aspirations of Nigerians.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Aturu studied law at the University of Ife, and devoted much of his legal practice to representing marginalised or oppressed individuals and groups.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He was nominated as a member of the ongoing national confab, but he renounced his membership, arguing that the conference was designed to achieve nothing.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He died aged 49.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><div class='separator' style='clear: both; text-align: center;'><a href="http://ift.tt/1jKVqfv" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="147" src="http://ift.tt/1jKVqfv" width="320"/> </a> </div><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Bayelsa State Government has condemned the story going the rounds that Governor Seriake Dickson lavished N2bn to host the 2014 African Movie Academy Awards.<br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The government has described the story credited to the Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress in the state and published in the media as “false, mischievous, cheap blackmail and clearly an attempt to mislead the public to score cheap political points.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The government’s denial was contained in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, on Sunday.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The government said, “For the umpteenth time, the government wishes to place on record that Dickson has never and will not waver in the implementation of his administration’s restoration agenda, which is anchored on transparency, accountability, probity, truth and fairplay.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The Governor did not mince words, when he remarked at the inception of his administration that most of the policies and programmes of government will be private sector driven, as it is with the top economies of the world and this has been the trend since 2012, when he took over the reins of power in the state.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“In keeping to this policy, Dickson has in the last two years, fully involved the private sector in the running of AMAA and this will be sustained throughout the life span of the administration.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“To put the records straight, prior to the 2013 AMAA, government organised a fundraiser at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja and realised little over N800m, while it raised over N200m from a pre-AMAA sponsors’ dinner in Lagos for the 2014 edition.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The government said a number of the sponsors made their contributions even after the fundraiser and with the money, AMAA 2013 and 2014 were successfully organised.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It added that in order to gain the confidence of private sector, the governor also directed that a special account be opened for AMAA funds and had been the case since 2013.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It added, “And in appreciation of the support the government got from the private sector, the Governor himself took full page advertorial in some national dailies to personally thank the major sponsors of AMAA 2014 and these things are not hidden.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“It, therefore, beats one’s imagination that, despite these programmes, which were well publicised in the media, somebody, who calls himself the imagemaker of a party like the APC could come up with a statement that Governor Dickson lavished N2bn to host AMAA and even described it as an erected conduit through which scarce public funds were drained.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>

The driver lost control and rammed into the church hitting the woman who knelt down praying, with her 4-month-old baby in her arms.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The woman was said to have died on the spot, but her baby and the Pastor who was praying for her survived.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Two persons have been arrested by the police in respect of the accident, Vanguard reports, adding that a similar accident occurred in front of the church about three weeks ago, involving an 18-seater bus. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><div id='attachment_172337' class='wp-caption alignright' readability='7'><a href="http://ift.tt/MwsMpV" rel="attachment wp-att-172337"><img alt="Dr. Muhammed Nazeef Yunus" class="size-medium wp-image-172337" height="300" src="http://ift.tt/MwsMpY" width="295"/> </a><br/><br /><p class='wp-caption-text'>Dr. Muhammed Nazeef Yunus</p><br /><br/> </div><br /><br/><br /><p>An Abuja Federal High Court has fixed February 3 for the arraignment of three suspected members of the Kogi State Boko Haram cell, including Dr. Nazeef Yunus, an Assistant Lecturer in Arabic and Islamic Studies at Kogi State University.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Also to be arraigned alongside Yunus are Umar Musa and Salami Abdullahi.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Justice Gabriel Kolawole fixed the date after it emerged that the charges filed against the accused persons by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation had not been served on them.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The judge ordered that the charges must be served on the suspects before February 3.<br/><br /><br/><br />The suspects will remain in the custody of the SSS until the arraignment.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The lecturer, Yunus, who was alleged to be the spiritual leader and coordinator of the Boko Haram sect in Kogi State, and the two others have been in the custody of the SSS since their arrest in October 2013.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The SSS had accused the suspects of planning to carry out an attack on parts of Kogi State before they were arrested at a mosque in Zuba, a town near Abuja, while on their way to Zambisa in Maiduguri, Borno State, for training.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Three other suspected members of the Kogi State Boko Haram cell – Mustapha Yusuf, Ismaila Abdulazeez, and Ibrahim Isa Hayafu – were freed by the court since no charge was brought against them.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Also yesterday, the court adjourned to February 7 to rule on an application filed by one of the suspects, Salami Abdullahi, to enforce his fundamental rights.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>In the application, Abdullahi accused the SSS of illegal detention, and urged the court to intervene by setting him free.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>But the SSS has opposed the application, arguing that a magistrates’ court in Lokoja, Kogi State, empowered it to detain the suspects.</p><br /><br/><br /><align><ins class='adsbygoogle' data-ad-client='ca-pub-0909255462614293' data-ad-slot='7578597399'> </ins> </align><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div><br /><p><img alt="Alleged-Boko-Haram-members-480x300" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-166644" height="300" src="http://ift.tt/19j45qT" width="480"/>The Defence Headquarters on Friday ordered the release of 167 suspects arrested in connection with Boko Haram insurgency in line with a presidential directive.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The suspects, who are to be released, include 157 from facilities in Borno State, nine from Yobe and one from Adamawa.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The affected persons would be released to their respective state governments by the appropriate military formations/commands in the three Northeast states which are currently under emergency rule.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Presidency and the Federal Ministry of Justice will work out the modalities for the trial of 500 suspects who have cases to answer.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>But about 1,000 other suspects are still in detention while investigation of their activities, especially the extent of their involvement in terrorism, is ongoing.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>A statement issued in Abuja by the Defence Spokesman, Gen. Chris Olukolade, confirmed the directive to release the 167 suspects.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The statement said: “Over 165 persons apprehended in the course of military operations on terror in three states in the North-East are to be released from custody in compliance with Presidential directive.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The suspects are those earlier recommended for release by the Joint Investigation Team, (JIT) set up by the Defence Headquarters last year. Of the number, 157 are from facilities in Borno, nine from Yobe and one suspect from Adamawa.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“It will be recalled that other detainees, particularly women and children have benefited from similar gestures which started in May last year. More suspects in this category are also to benefit in the present exercise.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The suspects will be released to their respective state governments”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It would be recalled that the Defence Headquarters had released all women and children in detention in connection with terrorism following a similar directive by President Goodluck Jonathan in May, 2013.</p><br /><br/><br /><align><ins class='adsbygoogle' data-ad-client='ca-pub-0909255462614293' data-ad-slot='7578597399'> </ins> </align><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

Further verification with the Office of Alumni Affairs is also currently impossible, the school said, because the college has been closed since June 2013 to loss of its accreditation.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“[Oduah] realized very early in life the indispensability of a sound education in her growth plans in life and therefore pursued her education with all diligence and sense of purpose,” her documents claimed, adding that a determination “to have the best education at the highest level” prompted her stay at the Virginia college in 1983 for the MBA programme.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“As her public relations machinery marched on, in December 2012 The Sun newspaper published an article headlined “Stella Oduah: An Amazon of transformation,” which lauded her “MBA from St Paul’s College, Lawrenceville Virginia USA.” The story also praised her for being an official who brought her “rich educational background to bear on the aviation sector by automating revenue centers in all the agencies and parastatals to boost their revenue profile and enhance transparency and accountability in the system.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />SaharaReporters similarly broke in October, the story that Mrs. Oduah, a former campaign manager for President Goodluck Jonathan, purchased two bulletproof BMW cars worth $ 1.6 Million (N255m) through the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, for her own use.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The House of Representatives, after a probe of the scandalous purchase, has asked President Jonathan to ‘review her status’ as minister, another way of saying that she should be sacked.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>
