So in 2012/13, the quartet of Duro-Aina Adebola, Bello Eniola, Akindele Abiola and Faleke Oluwatoyin – all students of Doregos Private Academy, Ipaja, Lagos, came up with urine-powered generator, they were applauded the world over.</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Although people liked the urine-powered generator but they complained of the urine odour so the trio of Oluwatomisin Osibote, Kpakpando Akaeze and Eveshorhema Samuel-Alli, all 14-year-old SS2 students of same school, improved on the work of thier predecessors, replacing the urine with waste oil and water to come up with the 2WP Tri-powered generator which won them $6,000 scholarship, a bronze medal and $150 cash at the 2014 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in Los Angeles, USA.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />This invention also won them the National Science Fair and Quiz competition held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State with a 76.4 aggregate score. In this chat with newsmen, the three spoke on the reason for embarking on the project . Excerpts:<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />THE project: According to Oluwatomisin Osibote, “Our aim was to achieve the goal of creating a cheap and sustainable energy source for homes and businesses which does not release carbon monoxide.”<br/><br /><br/><br />Kpakpando Akaeze: “The tri-powered generator is like an evolutionary technology from the urine-powered generator made by our seniors.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The urine-powered generator was created by four girls in this school who thought of how to stop carbon monoxide (CO) from destroying the ecosystem and save lives and also generate free electricity without any obnoxious substances being released. Some people complained about the odour of the urine. Even when we tried to suppress it with chemicals like sodium carbonate or sea shells, the odour was still there so we tried to look for other ways to create a generator that works on waste.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>Fuel from waste oil and water</b><br/><br /><br/><br />Continues Akaeze: “Rather than looking for other ways to suppress the urine odour, we came up with the tri-powered generator which can work on waste oil, ionized water or urine. Waste oil is the black oil that is removed from vehicles when they are being serviced. It is processed into butane and propane gases which are then used to power the generator.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“In our quest to get something similar but different from urine, we came up with the idea of using ionized water.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>The principle:</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Since the urine-powered generator was created through the principle of electrolysis, we also used the same principle to create the tri-powered generator. Urine is a metabolic waste from the body while waste oil and ionized water are mechanical wastes from vehicles and other machines. Now, ionized water consists of 96 per cent water, 2 per cent Sodium Tetraoxosulphate (VI) and 2 per cent Sodium Trioxonitrate (V).<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />We chose those substances because when we were making the ionized water, we tried using sodium chloride (table salt) but because of the presence of chlorine in the salt, it corroded and destroyed the engine and the generator was damaged, so we looked for other salts that would ionize the water. That was how we got the two salts together,” said Akaeze.<br/><br /><br/><br /><b><br/> </b> <b>Household urine</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />On how they had intended getting enough urine to power generators for industrial use, Eveshorhema Samuel-Alli said: “Actually, that was why we had to improve on what our predecessors did. It is much easier to make ionized water using the two salts and water. So this will be much easier for companies that would want to use the generator to produce their own salts and sell to the public and also for household use. They can use their own household urine and if they prefer to use the salts, they could do so too. The ionized water is an alternative to the urine.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>Improvisation:</b><br/><br /><br/><br />Said Osibote: “We were trying to make the urine and ionized water chambers more portable so they can be lifted with one hand. The initial ones we made were really difficult to carry. We went to GE Garage in Ikoyi where we met with some Americans travelling round the world helping countries and teaching them how to use some technologies. Surprisingly, they looked up our project and thought they could help us, so we got some help from them. They made the catalytic and ionized water chambers in circular forms which were placed on a shelf thus making it easier to carry.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>Refilling the urine chamber:</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Many people have been asking how we are going to be refilling the urine-powered generator if it becomes popular. The urine-powered generator is not the same as the fossil fuel generator which can be refilled through a funnel or pipe. At first when our seniors started the urine-powered generator, in creating the urine chamber, they used screwdrivers to open the chamber so if they want to refill the generator, they will need screwdrivers and the time to do all that.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“A parent can leave her children at home and they may not know how to open the chamber so we have created a shelf whereby there will be a pipe connecting the septic tank to the chambers of the urine-powered generator so when people urinate in the urinal, the urine will pass directly to the urine chamber,” said Eveshorhema.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“It will be something like a bowl that will come along with the generator.<br/><br /><br/><br />Ït will be placed by the side of the toilet and only urine will pass through and the urine processing chamber will suck it in. No water or solid waste will go in there, just urine, said Osibote.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>Comparision</b><br/><br /><br/><br />“We had six hours of electricity each from1.83 litres of waste oil and 1.83 litres of ionized water. But for fossil fuel generators, you need about two litres for a maximum of four or five hours of electricity,” said Akaeze.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The young scientists believe that their work will go a long way in helping not only Africa but the world.<br/><br /><br/><br />Added Osibote: “What it can power depends on the capacity of the generator and the number of litres. We decided to use 1.9 KVA generator because of its portability. We’ve tested it on a refrigerator and it carried it and it was able to carry 1,600 watts. At my last meeting with you, which was at the instance of the party’s National chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, you requested that I be part of the ongoing Osun State governorship campaigns. Mr. President would remember that I stated that the minimum the party leadership could do to get me to campaign was to instruct the Ogun State chapter of the party to withdraw its appeal at the Supreme Court; or alternatively, obey the Appeal Court order, and allow me to resume duty, the same way the party obeyed the faulty Federal High Court verdict that ousted me.<br/><br /><br/><br />“To the foregoing, I wish to state that I was promised some positive response which never came, up till this moment. The Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih CFR, has also on several occasions, after discussing me, met with Your Excellency on this matter assuring you of my loyalty to you and to the cause of the party.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“I am also aware that the Senate President, Senator David Mark, GCON, has similarly met with you and made a case for my return to office. Senator Mark went to the extent of asking you to hold him responsible for all actions I might take as National Secretary.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Mr. President, allow me to state with emphasis that what joins Senator Mark and my humble-self is more than politics. The military family that binds us does not know double-dealing or disloyalty. A part of our training, we keep our words, hence we are called “Gentlemen Officers.” That precisely was why the Senate President could most frontally vouch for me.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Your Excellency, allow me to also recall that on three occasions, Senator Mark informed that I had agreed to submit to you a pre-signed resignation letter, if that would allay all fears of insincerity; and all, in a bid to ensure that the injustice of my illegal removal from office is redressed.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“I wish to respectfully state that I do not go back on my words, just like I don’t abandon my friends, associates and leaders, no matter how hard the situation might be.<br/><br /><br/><br />“That explains why as a State Governor, I remained very loyal to my boss, former President Ibrahim Babangida, GCFR, even when he had some issues with the government of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, I wish to respectfully recall very respectfully, that Chief Obasanjo never made any attempt to move against me on account of these differences.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The same spirit today drives me as I maintain my loyalty to former President Obasanjo, who may, or who may not have any relationship with your government. It was that same spirit that made me insist on your approval of my candidature, in your capacity as national leader of the party and president, before I agreed with my brother-governors request in 2012, to contest for the position of PDP National Secretary. I should like to state that I am not a fair-weather fellow. To my friends, the spirit is very similar to marital vow.”<br/><br /><br/><br />Oyinlola said it was unfortunate that President Jonathan was unprepared to listen to entreaties by party leaders on his behalf.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He added: “Mr. President, I wish to observe that with all these efforts by me and other credible leaders of our party, it appears clearly to me that you are not totally convinced that I am who I have always been in my journey through life.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“I have, therefore, come to the conclusion that it is this mindset that is at the root of my challenges in PDP. It seems to me that I am not wanted by the national leader of the party; and I know that.<br/><br /><br/><br />“Therefore, I will certainly not be doing myself justice and good, despite everything, if I don’t think seriously about my political journey and take a firm decision.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Mr. President, I may at this point, need to look beyond the party and take my destiny in my hands. This is because the nation is strong only with balanced development. Wide disparity in incomes among groups and among individuals is counter-productive.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He stated that the stance of their southern counterparts on some of the proposals had shown that there might be a hidden agenda against the North.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The forum’s spokesperson said, “It is not correct to submit that the North is more firm on resource control than any other issue. The loud voice about resource control is not from the North but the South.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The North never came to this conference with an agenda. This is precisely because the region did not consider the problems of Nigeria to be in the structure, form of government or in the Constitution but in the failure of leadership at all levels due largely to the collapse of national ideals, moral values, as well as in the way we do things.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />A delegate representing the South-West geopolitical zone at the confab, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, however, said resource control would not break up the country. According to him, “unity is not uniformity.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We reject that argument. Let everybody move at their pace. Let nobody holdsanybody down. Their idea of nationhood is what will lead to a break-up because there is a limit to which people can wait for their destiny to be held down,” Odumakin stated.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Odumakin, a member of the confab Committee on Government Restructuring and Forms of Government, accused the North of slowing down the progress of the country, saying that it was time to release the creative energy of every section of the country.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said, “The argument (that the regions will not develop evenly) is so porous. The sections of the country cannot develop at the same pace. In fact, what they (North) have done over the years when they had power was to drag back sections that were moving ahead; to hold everybody down so that nobody would develop.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“They are not ready for development, yet they are holding everybody down and they have put the country in a bind over the years. If I cannot do this, you cannot do it; that is the cause of backwardness and that is why the country has remained in a mess.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Odumakin, who is also the spokesperson for the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, argued that if the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo had relied on the North, he would not have been able to achieve great feats in the defunct Western Region.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Over the years, all these feats were reversed that today, you may not be able to distinguish between the region and the rest of Nigeria. That is what they want; equalisation of underdevelopment and backwardness,” he added.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Also speaking, an Anambra State delegate to the confab, Prof. A. B. C Nwosu, faulted the argument of the northern delegates on resource control. He stated that there was nowhere in the world where all the sections of the society develop at equal pace.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He urged the North to place justice and fairness above other sentiments on the issue.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Any society that is not built on justice cannot stand. What they are asking for is not justice at all; it is not fair,” Nwosu stated.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said communities where certain mineral resources are explored must derive benefits from the exploration.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He stated that, “It is not appreciating this fact that is leading to all kinds of funny arguments.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Nwosu, who is also a member of the Devolution of Power Committee, said the problem started when the confab proposed an intervention fund for the North-East, which is mostly affected by Boko Haram insurgency.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />A member of the Consensus Group at the comfab, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, had on Wednesday said the group had agreed that the oil producing states be given not less than 18 per cent derivation.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Gambari said the group had also agreed that a new fund to be established — the Fund for Stabilisation, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction — which he put at five per cent of the Federal Allocation, would be out for principally the North-East, North-West and the North-Central.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />But a majority of the delegates, including members of the Gambari group, had faulted the report and rejected it.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />However, Nwosu said, “The unreasonable thing that stopped this is that the North wants it to include the North-East, the North-West and the North-Central. That is the ultimate in being unreasonable. What of those of us in the South-East? What of Biafra? What of what happened to us in the North? The professor asked.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He further asked why all the regions were concentrating on oil, when other valuable resources were being carted away by foreigners without proper taxation.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Nwosu said, “As I speak to you, they are taking away gold, barite and other resources from Nasarawa, Zamfara and other states. This is worth billions, according to NEITI, which cannot be wrong.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“No royalties are being paid but why is it that nobody is complaining about this. The Chinese and the Lebanese are carting away our gold, barite and precious metals and we are not getting royalty. But we are fixed on oil.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He added that the proposed 18 per cent derivation and five per cent for mineral development was “right and just.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />In her submission, another member of the Devolution of Power Committee and Niger Delta activist, Annkio Briggs, said she was surprised by the position of the northern delegates.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />She said, “I am not speaking for the South-South at the confab, I am speaking for the people in the Niger Delta that have not had electricity for over 50 years of exploring and exploiting oil and gas in the area.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We have lacked and wanted it because our resources have been used to develop Nigeria, excluding us; when Abuja is having eight-lane roads being constructed day and night. Abuja may be the capital of Nigeria; it is in the northern part of Nigeria.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />She decried that a second runway had been approved for the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, while the airport in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, which had existed before the creation of Abuja, had not been built to international standards.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Briggs said, “That resource control may lead to the splitting of Nigeria is the most selfish thing I have heard since we have been discussing the issue of derivation. This is the most unreasonable and selfish reason.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Are they saying that we should not develop until the rest of Nigeria develops along with us? The reason why everybody is thoughtful about what we are talking about at the conference today is very clear that everybody cannot develop at the same pace. He suggested that the operation should focus on tracking the real insurgents traversing the borders of Benue, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Plateau, Taraba and Kogi.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The governor called on the people of the area, especially the herdsmen to remain calm and not to take law into their hands.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He assured them that adequate measures were being put in place to avert such incidence, and promised that the issue would be reported to the military authorities and President Goodluck Jonathan.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Al-makura said that the community-based approach to resolving the farmers/herdsmen feud in the state was yielding results and would be improved upon.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>In his response, Elayo describe the incident as “unfortunate”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Elayo said that the herdsman and farmers in the area were working hard to fish out criminal elements infiltrating their ranks to cause mayhem.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He urged the people of the area to eschew all forms of violence as no meaningful development could be achieved in an atmosphere of rancour.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Idris Ibrahim, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the incident would not jeopardise the pact signed by the farmers and herdsman.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to Ibrahim, youths from the warring groups were in his office to reassure him of their commitment to the peace pact initiated by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar. Parents and guardians are advised to limit information about themselves to their children, drivers and domestic servants. Now that everything is destroyed by these gunmen, how do the surviving ones continue with life here in this village?”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The village head of Alau Ngawo Fate, Mallam Ibrahim, also confirmed the incident to newsmen yesterday in Maiduguri.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said most of the insurgents communicated in Kanuri language, while setting the houses ablaze for over 30 minutes without the intervention of soldiers and policemen from Maiduguri.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We are at the mercy of these insurgents, as there was no security provided for us here in this village that had enjoyed peace for many decades. But yesterday (Sunday), I lost 18 of my people without any genuine cause,” the village head said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Spokesman of the 7 Division, Nigerian Army, Colonel Mohammed Dole and Borno State Police Commissioner, Lawal Tanko confirmed the incident, but said they were yet to get detailed information on the number of casualties.</p><br /><br/><br /><align><ins class='adsbygoogle' data-ad-client='ca-pub-0909255462614293' data-ad-slot='7578597399'> </ins> </align><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>
