Mr. Ambode, who had been seated through the night, sat quietly and savoured the moment.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />13 aspirants participated in the party’s governorship ticket, but by the time the final result was announced, Mr. Ambode, the eventual winner, was the only one left at the venue.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The other 12 candidates had left by Thursday evening.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Other aspirants scored as follows: Lanre Ope [0 vote ], Tokunbo Wahab [7 votes], Adekunle Disu [9 votes], Abayomi Sutton [0 vote], Tokunbo Agbesanwa [0 vote], Adeyemi Ikuforiji [182 votes], Tola Kasali [68 votes], Supo Shasore [121 votes], Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon (GOS) [272 votes], Lekan Pitan [112 votes], Obafemi Hamzat [1,201].<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The exercise was largely peaceful but with Mr. Tinubu discreetly anointing a candidate, it was a one-sided race all along, with Mr. Ambode largely projected to win. He did not prove bookmakers wrong.<br/><br /><br/><br />Mr. Ambode, 51, is a former Accountant-General for Lagos.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Not known to be a politician before now, Mr. Ambode frequently flaunts his public service credentials.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />At his official declaration to run on October 24, Mr. Ambode said he played an important role in raising Lagos State’s monthly internally generated revenue from N600 million to N12 billion.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“I am resolved to offer you genuine leadership that will be accountable with all the principles of good governance, a government of inclusion that will not leave any race or gender behind. No matter your age, sex, tribe or any other status, as long as you reside in Lagos, we will make Lagos liveable for you,” he said at the time.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We will work to create opportunities for all and offer selfless service. As we proceed we will leave no one behind. What our great party stands for is change, positive change. We will create wealth. We will create new jobs. In my acceptance speech, I called for forgiveness and healing of rifts.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“In one week or two, I will unfold my plans for the party, which will carry everyone along. The duo’s emergence did not go down well with Sheriff, who reportedly sponsored the candidature of former foreign affairs minister Ikimi and Kashim Ibrahim Imam for the two prime positions in the party.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Sheriff or SAS as he is fondly called, who confirmed his displeasure about the convention to a <em>Daily Trust</em> correspondent, described the results of the convention as a sham and is contemplating joining another party.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Speaking through his close associate, Dr. Umar Duhu, a former interim national vice chairman (North-East) of the APC, Sheriff said he was not only victimized, but that his associates including Tom Ikimi whose house was used to actualize the merger of APC, were schemed out of positions in the party despite his initial endorsement.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Sherriff views the outcome of the congresses as a witch-hunt. All his associates including Kashim Imam, Umar Duhu and Tom Ikimi were not considered at the convention despite endorsement. Even though there is appeals committee, Sheriff is angry with the APC but has not decided whether to join another party”, Duhu said last night.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“What happened is a charade that is orchestrated by Buhari and Tinubu’s men who want to actualize their Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket and I can tell you that it is not realizable in the present Nigeria”, he added.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Sheriff and his associates are particularly irked by the process that produced Odigie-Oyegun as chairman of the party while nothing has been done to compensate him with other key party positions.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He is also angry that he has failed to get any of his associates to prominent positions within the party and is feeling short-changed at the outcome of the convention.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The former influential governor is said to have thrown his weight behind Ikimi as national chairman of the party but failed to get the very important endorsement of party leaders led by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, whose camp rooted for John Odigie-Oyegun.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>At the convention proper last Friday, the picture began to unfold that Odigie-Oyegun, who was the first executive governor of Edo State was the preferred candidate for APC’s top position, when another candidate for the position, ex-Bayelsa State governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, was prevailed upon to step down.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It was learnt that Ikimi refused to step down for Oyegun initially even after the party’s leaders made their choice known before the convention. He had to later on following the political horse-trading that saw Sylva withdraw from the race, thereby, foreclosing the chances of an open contest.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Sheriff, sources say, had another card up his sleeves that would enable him pick the national secretary of the party.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>But his plan ‘B’ did not see the light of day as the party governors had their way when they moved against Kashim Ibrahim Imam (Sheriff’s choice for party scribe) and instead backed Mai Mala Buni, the Yobe APC chairman, who joined the race at the last minute following the withdrawal of Alhaji Tijjani Tumsah from the race.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>This is said to have angered Sheriff and his group, more so as the former governor has been reportedly engaged in a cold war with Tinubu over the control of the party.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, when contacted, said the party will respond to the grievances raised by Ikimi and the others in due course.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Meanwhile, how the APC navigates through this gathering storm remains to be seen as the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is on standby, ready to snap up those who are purportedly displeased with the outcome of the National Convention.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

<script type="text/javascript"> <script size='468x60' src='http://srvpub.com/adServe/banners?tid=22528_31474_5' type='text/javascript'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google_ad_client = "ca-pub-6630608044863529"; google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><img alt="rainfall" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-220813" height="184" src="http://ift.tt/1n2RJUe" width="274"/>Residents of the nation’s commercial nerve centre – Lagos State – have been alerted to coming downpours which will be accompanied with occasional thunderstorm.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, who gave the alert in a statement on Sunday, added that there would also be occasional flash flood on some roads around the state.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He, however, advised residents not to panic, saying it was normal to have pools of water on the road whenever it rained consistently in a city like Lagos.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mr. Bello also advised residents to stay off the roads if they do not have serious cause to go out in order not to be caught in a gridlock.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Bello said, “Whenever it rains heavily across the state, there is a rise in the Lagoon and ocean, which automatically locks up all the canals in the state. When the water in the ocean and Lagoon recedes, our canals will discharge into these water bodies.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The after effect is that it takes a long time before water discharges into the Lagoon as well as the time it eliminates all backflows.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“However, it is pertinent to explain that water on the road after continuous rainfall is not flooding, but flash flood, which will definitely disappear in a matter of time because our canals are already functional.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Lagosians are advised not to panic, but go about their business activities as our canals are regularly cleaned and maintained to contain storm water generated during the rains.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“But we advise our people, if possible, to stay off the roads when they don’t have a very serious cause to do so, in order not to be caught in the after-rain gridlock”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The commissioner assured residents that drainage engineers and attendants were working round the clock to ensure that canals were regularly cleaned and maintained in order to free them from all blockages.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He added that the government was prepared, saying it would regularly inform residents of weather patterns, and whenever the need arises, “for people in the flood plain areas to relocate”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mr. Bello also urged the community development associations and resident associations to relate with engineers in the 57 councils whenever the need arose.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

Now, his family and the academic community has urged President Goodluck Jonathan as well as the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mohammed Abubakar, to help in the search for the professor.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Olomo, a professor at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, was declared missing in October last year.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The family of Olomo and Otan Ayegbaju community, his home town at a joint press conference at weekend enjoined well meaning Nigerians, especially security operatives, to assist in restoring the freedom of the professor.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Speaking on the issue, President of Otan Aiyegbaju Progressive Union (OAPU), Mr. Ademola Olawale, noted that the community and Olomo’s family had made several efforts to find the missing professor but to no avail, hence the call on the federal government and the police for assistance.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said that the community had sent representatives to the Akwa Ibom State Police Command as part of efforts to find Olomo, adding that: “The police in Akwa Ibom State are trying their best but we are of the opinion that the presidential intervention in the matter will hasten the process of finding and release of Olomo.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Section 14 (2B) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and the oath of office of the President provide the need for the president to protect the lives of all Nigerians no matter how little or big he or she may be anywhere in the whole world.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He therefore urged Governors Rauf Aregbesola and Godswill Akpabio of Osun and Akwa Ibom States respectively to intensify efforts in the search for the don who he described as an illustrious son of Osun State and Nigeria in general.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>
