She was said to have died after a protracted illness of over 10 years.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Our correspondent gathered that the deceased, while she was alive, had received treatment in hospitals in Nigeria and abroad.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The deceased, who was born in 1947, died on Tuesday.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, Dr. Bukola Saraki, in a statement on Thursday by his media aide, Bamikole<br/><br /><br/><br />Omishore described Funmilayo’s death as a sad loss to Kwara State and the family of the deceased.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Saraki who is a former Kwara State governor and Senate Chairman on Ecology and Environment, prayed for the repose of the soul of the<br/><br /><br/><br />deceased and the fortitude for Adebayo and his family members to bear the irreparable loss.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“This is indeed a sad development for us all, I can only imagine the void that her passing away will create for her husband, the children<br/><br /><br/><br />and the entire family.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“No doubt, its a trying period for everyone who has had one form of contact or the other with her, her immediate family and close<br/><br /><br/><br />associates. Sambo Dasuki (rtd.), the Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed and the Director-General of National Space Research and Development Agency, Prof. Seidu Mohammed.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“As can be easily verified from the complete list of members of the Presidential entourage to Chad which was also circulated on Sunday and never changed, Senator Sheriff’s name was not on it. The only other persons on the list were the President’s aides, security personnel and journalists.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The APC and others who rushed to condemn President Jonathan for a non-existent indiscretion would have found, if they took the least trouble to double-check, that there was absolutely no factual basis for their accusation.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Those who associate with Senator Sheriff know that he has longstanding interests in Chad and often spends a lot of his time there. He happened to be in Ndjamena at the time of President Jonathan’s visit and joined other Nigerian residents of the Chadian capital in coming to the airport to welcome their President.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“That was the full extent of his participation in the visit and it was also at Ndjamena Airport that the pictures which formed the basis of the bogus allegation of President Jonathan hobnobbing with an “accused sponsor of terrorism” were taken.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The former Governor’s presence in Chad was certainly not at President Jonathan’s instance and he did not participate in any of the President’s discussions with President Idriss Deby or his other engagements in Ndjamena.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“President Jonathan is fully aware of the allegation made against Senator Sheriff by Stephen Davis. <script type="text/javascript"> <script size='468x60' src='http://srvpub.com/adServe/banners?tid=22528_31474_5' type='text/javascript'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google_ad_client = "ca-pub-6630608044863529"; google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p>The World Bank has earmarked N94.5 billion for erosion control projects in Anambra State.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Bank Task Team leader, Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project – NewMap, Dr. Amos Abu disclosed this during a courtesy call on Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State at the Government House, Awka, Friday.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said the State had already paid its counterpart contribution of N500 million and approved four sites for the intervention.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Abu said Anambra State was one of the seven states selected for the erosion control projects approved in September last year.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He explained that the Bank was equally planning to intervene on major erosion sites of Agulu, Nanka, Oko, Ekwulobia and Nnewi South local government areas of the state, depending on priority sites selected by the State government and approved by the Technical Committee of the Bank in the next phase of the project.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Work Bank Task Leader lamented that over 80 per cent of gully erosion sites were caused by poorly terminated drains resulting from road construction and disclosed that a retreat for federal and state governments would be convened to check the dangerous practice and key into global best practices.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Responding, Governor Obiano said the State had selected six more erosion sites for World Bank intervention, bringing the number of sites to ten and assured that his administration was ready to increase the State’s counterpart contribution to carry the new projects.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Obiano explained that the necessary structure had also been put in place to promote transparency and accountability in the State’s collaboration with the Bank.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He further revealed that the Ministry of Environment had been directed to conduct fresh numeration of erosion sites in the State to give an update on new sites, while sand excavation in all parts of the State had been banned to determine its contribution in aggravating erosion devastation.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

The Boko Haram gunmen had the group surrounded, constantly watching.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“My mind was busy, thinking of a way to escape,” she said. “I and two other girls were close together, speaking softly, and we came up with a plan.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The girls told the gunmen they needed to relieve themselves. They were allowed to walk into the bush.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“As soon as we were out of sight of the gunmen, we fled and we ran for about two hours,” the girl said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Eventually, the three stumbled across a group of Fulani herders, who rescued them.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Police say 53 girls had escaped from the gunmen as of Friday, but 276 remained missing.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Another girl told of bravely escaping under a hail of gunfire.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“They took us away in a convoy of lorries. We travelled through the night before reaching the final destination in the forest,” she said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The following day we were sent to fetch water. She spoke on the rot she met on her assumption of office, the reforms she introduced to make our skies safer, and the airports’ remodelling she initiated as part of the efforts to key into the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan.</b> </i><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>Opinions differ about the situation on ground in the aviation sector when you came in as minister in 2011. Some people claim the situation was bad. Others say it was not so bad. What exactly was the situation?</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The first thing I did upon my appointment as Minister of Aviation on July 2, 2011, was to take a comprehensive assessment tour of all airports, all agencies and parastatals as well as their facilities and installations across the country. I found that safety and security-critical equipment and installations were obsolete, unserviceable or unavailable. Infrastructure all round-airport terminals were dilapidated and derelict.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Airport facilities and services such as air conditioning, toilets, trolleys, elevators, directional signage, power generators, etc were unserviceable, unreliable, unavailable or not user-friendly. Security screening equipment at airports was obsolete and mostly unreliable. Airport fire stations and fire fighting equipment were in poor condition, with fire hydrants unserviceable and firemen and women had gone without proper kits for years. Working condition of staff in airport offices was terrible and unsafe (i.e. leaking roofs, broken floors, no power supply, etc.).<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Working condition for air traffic controllers in the control towers was poor with serious safety risks for the industry. Several control tower upgrade projects spread across the country, about 154, had been abandoned. Several runways were without lighting.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Aviation Training College in Zaria had lost its ability to train students and lacked adequate equipment and facilities. There was massive leakage of agencies revenue due to manipulation of manual revenue collection processes while there was further loss of agencies’ revenue due to several lopsided so-called ‘concession’ agreements that were skewed against the government and the public interest. We had poor management structures and weak corporate governance frameworks in agencies and parastatals which made accountability difficult, if not impossible.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />There were extremely unhealthy domestic airlines and a business model that made government interventions wasteful and of no positive effect. Domestic airlines were withholding money that did not belong to them, and falling to pay their bills as and when due. There was apathy by the entire industry to basic customer service responsibilities.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Complete neglect of economic regulation was seriously compromising overall safety and proper economic development of the domestic airline sector. We had a general aviation sector that was almost completely unregulated creating a huge safety gap in the industry and an obsolescent national aviation policy. There was total lack of planning in the entire industry.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>We have at least three major airports namely Lagos, Kano, Port-Harcourt which one would have expected the aviation authorities to take adequate care of, not only because of the high traffic that passes through them but also because of what they represent: The symbols of aviation in Nigeria. In what state were they?</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), the nation’s main gateway, had been left to rot and decay massively to the point that it had become unbefitting of our country. Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport Abuja (NAIA) had a domestic terminal better described as unfit for purpose. The international terminal of Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano (MAKIA) was a very sad tale to tell. Port Harcourt International Airport (PHIA) was by far the worst of all the airports.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>So what was the impact of the sorry state of affairs of our aviation infrastructure?</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />In terms of safety and security, the industry was in retrogression, generally lagging far behind the rest of the world. Economically, the industry had become a net liability to government and the national economy. The industry had established for itself a negative image and thus had become a very poor symbol of our national identity.
