<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><div id='attachment_233197' class='wp-caption alignleft' readability='7'><img alt="PHOTO CREDIT: PREMIUM TIMES" class="size-full wp-image-233197" height="225" src="http://ift.tt/1uWbtT6" width="360"/><br/><br /><p class='wp-caption-text'>PHOTO CREDIT: PREMIUM TIMES</p><br /><br/> </div><br /><br/><br /><p>In what appears as a surprise combination for the 2015 general election, posters of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal and Emeka Ihedioha respectively, as President and Vice Presidential aspirants under the banner of All Progressives Congress (APC), Saturday, sprung up in major streets of Abuja, the nation’s capital.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Although both men are members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, those behind the posters said “We have decided our choice 2015”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>But the spokesman for Mr. Tambuwal, Imam Imam, issued a statement last night distancing the speaker from the emergence of the presidential posters, just as he urged those behind it to beware of the nation’s laws as regards premature political campaigns.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has consistently warned politicians and political parties against abuse of campaign laws in the country, especially with regards to the 2015 election.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The statement by Imam reads in part: “While we thank them for deeming us fit for elective office in the country, let it be known that since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not given the go-ahead for those interested in elective positions to start mobilisation, it is inappropriate for any person or group to print campaign posters and have them placed in strategic areas all over the country.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Laws of the Federation are meant to be obeyed by the high and mighty. The Honourable Speaker will make known the direction he will take with regards to his political future at the appropriate time”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The 2010 Electoral Act (as amended), stipulates that campaigns should commence 90 days before any election.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Section 99 (1-3) of the Electoral Act says: “For the purpose of this Act, the period of campaigning in public by every political party shall commence 90 days before polling day and end 24 hours prior to that day.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“A registered political party which through any person acting on its behalf during the 24 hours before polling day”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Procures for publication or acquiesces in the publication of an advertisement in a Newspaper for the purpose of promoting or opposing a particular candidates, commits an offence under this Act and upon conviction is liable to a maximum fine of N500, 000”.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div><br /><p><a href="http://www.informationng.com/2014/01/how-we-spent-10-8bn-oil-revenue.html/nnpc-14" rel="attachment wp-att-166687"><img alt="nnpc" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-166687" height="233" src="http://informationng.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/nnpc.png" width="229"/> </a> </p><br /><br/><br /><p>After disputing the claims of the Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi of an unremitted $48.9 billion oil revenue, saying it was $10.8 billion, the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, yesterday, gave a clearer account of how it spent the $10.8 billion.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Corporation which until now had said nothing about spending the money said it spent the sum on subsidy on PMS, known as petrol, repairs of vandalised pipeline and products/crude oil losses as well as maintenance of national strategic reserves, said it enjoys legal backing to incur such expenditure on behalf of the government.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Making the clarification at an interactive session with Energy Correspondents in Abuja, Group Executive Director, Finance and Accounts Directorate of the Corporation, Mr. Bernard Otti said that as a law-abiding corporate entity, NNPC’s processes and procedures are guided by the provisions of the law.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Whatever expenditure we have incurred in the discharge of the above national responsibilities are backed by the law setting up the Corporation.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said the Corporation was backed by Section 7, Sub section A and B of the NNPC Act.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mr. Otti insisted that the $10.8 billion currently the subject of ongoing inter-agency reconciliation exercise was not missing, noting that, “the sum in question has been expenditures incurred as part of statutory responsibilities which the NNPC as a National Oil Company executes on behalf of the Federal Government and by extension the entire people of Nigeria.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to him, the $10.5 billion reflects expenditure incurred by the NNPC in the period under review and are rarely made up of the following, subsidy claims, $8.49 billion, pipeline Management and Repair cost, $1.22 billion, products/crude oil losses, $0.72 billion, and cost of holding Strategic Reserves, $0.37 billion.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said these are being subject to the normal continuing inter-agency reconciliation exercise.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He added, “there is a process by which revenue accrue into government account, there is also government policy stating that subsidy is still in place. NNPC does not create policies but it execute s policies, the subsidy claim has simply arisen because after 2011 period. We saw there was no import of petroleum products when prices had gone up, NNPC was the sole importer and subsidy claims for this particular period had gone up. The subsidy claims normally is known to all relevant agencies.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mr. Otti who is also a member, Board of Directors of the Corporation added that, “It is also on record that for many years now, NNPC has been the main supplier of products to the nation. Most of these products are imported at international prices but sold at regulated prices.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>At some point, NNPC was the sole importer of products into the country. The Corporation has successfully kept the nation wet with products, especially PMS, for the past three years as can be verified from the absence of queues at petrol stations during normal and festive seasons.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“It is significant to note that the government has not made any payments to the Corporation in the name of subsidy during the period under review.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I should like to use this opportunity to restate our position on subsidy. The subsidy is a policy of the Federal Government. We only implement what we are directed to,” he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Otti stressed further that “another area of huge expenditure on behalf of the Federal Government is the maintenance of national strategic reserves for petroleum products. We all know there is no peace and security, we all know the anger and frustration of people in the country. There are questions to be answered and tongues are wagging. That is why we are here to call on Allah to intervene, to give us the means to attain lasting peace, to enable our leaders to do what is right and to be fair and just to the citizenry.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We are on the verge of another election and acrimony is already manifesting, open letters here and there. It is only Allah that can intervene on behalf of the downtrodden and marginalised.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“This is also to show the world that we are Muslims, we are not terrorists, we are not arsonists. We have a duty to call on Allah, we are asking for peace, and praying to Allah for peace is our contribution towards attaining peace and tranquility.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“There is no group in the country that is economically marginalised than the Muslims. We pray to Allah to intervene.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“In spite of the fact that we’re the object of hate and calumny, we extend our hearts to others. We pray Allah to help touch the hearts of our leaders; to enable us to toe the path of peace. We pray Allah to help the politicians bury their inordinate ambition,” Ahmad said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He also described as undemocratic, the call by certain groups that time was ripe for a Christian governor in the state, urging Lagosians to vote same come 2015. He said Lagosians had never voted along religious line in history.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Also speaking, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, Secretary-General, Nigeria Council for Islamic Affairs, NCIA called on Muslims to unite, especially those in leadership positions, in order to fight the scourge of unemployment, poverty, disease, hunger, ignorance, mis-governance, corruption, tribalism, among other vices in the society.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“For us as Muslims, I mean true practicing Muslims, we need to join hands to strive and provide exemplary leadership in various spheres of life and endeavours and ultimately for the nation. We must not stay-by and watch. We owe ourselves and Allah the responsibility to create an enabling environment for the unfettered worship of Allah and practice of Islam in a plural society like Nigeria without annihilating non-Muslims.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We must live peacefully with our neighbours in an atmosphere of mutual respect for one another to jointly fight common problems such as unemployment, poverty, disease, hunger, ignorance, mis-governance, corruption, tribalism, moral decadence, drug abuse, insecurity, r*pe, religious intolerance, human right abuse, impunity, poor/non-existent infrastructure, victimisation, election rigging and so on.
