<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p>One person was reportedly killed while several others were injured following an attack on a Catholic Church in Ungwan Pau-Pau village, Kachia local government area of Kaduna state by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen on Sunday.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The incident was said to have occurred at about 8 am on Sunday when the gunmen invaded the Church during Sunday worship.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Eyewitnesses said a young man who was guarding the Church was killed while several others sustained injuries from gun shots and were rushed to the hospital in the area for treatment.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to Timothy Gomel, a resident of the community, “The gunmen came with sophisticated weapons shooting and one person died instantly while several others have been admitted in the hospital. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p>Civil rights activists, Nollywood actors, lawyers and lawmakers, yesterday, staged a protest in Lagos calling for the rescue of the abducted Chibok girls, failing which President Goodluck Jonathan should forget next year’s elections.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>At the protest were the President, Women Arise Initiative and Campaign for Democracy (CD), Dr. Joe Okei Odumakin; Mr. Femi Aborishade, former General Secretary of National Conscience Party (NCP); Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Finance; Ayo Obe, Lagos based lawyer, Nollywood actor, Mr. Saheed Balogun among others.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Founder of the Nigerian Advance Party (NAP) and a delegate at the ongoing National Conference, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, who was among the protesters yesterday, said the Federal Government should forget any preparations for the 2015 general election, if it failed to rescue the Chibok girls alive.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Braithwaite made the demand at a rally organised by the Women Arise Initiative and other activist groups, held at the Event Garden, opposite Lagos State House of Assembly, Alausa, to mark the 100 days of Chibok girls’ abduction.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The protesters, who were dressed in different T-shirts bearing inscriptions of the 100 days of the abduction of the girls, were armed with placards, some of which read: “Punish the criminals,” “Fish out the beasts,” “Stone age gone,” “Stop the killing,” “Chibok girls are human beings not numbers,” “Shekau: Find goods to sell, not our girls” among others.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I want this generation to decide; it has nothing to do with Jonathan.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“You have to decide whether we are going to conduct 2015 election, while these girls are still in captivity?</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Let them begin to hear that all the preparations for 2015 election shall come to nothing unless we bring the girls back; unless we stop corruption in this nation.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“There is something about this man, President Jonathan, which I want you to take aboard. The President deserves pity, not attack.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“He is a listening man. The man who convoked the national conference, never minding what may come out of it. But good has to come out.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“If good does not come out of the national conference and if these girls are not rescued, we will not allow elections to hold in 2015,” Braithwaite said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Also speaking at the rally, Okei Odumakin said: “No election is complete without them. Nothing really happens until they return.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We do not make these statements as ones who seek appointments or political leverage.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We say these as women, mothers, Nigerians who would do whatever is required of us to have the girls back.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We want to know the policy guiding their release operations. There is Goodduu ooo…There is Goooodduuu oooo…”</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mrs. Jonathan had summoned the school’s principal, Mrs. Kwarmbula and an unnamed staff of the West African Examination Council, WAEC, over the abduction of 234 schoolgirls by the Boko Haram insurgents on 14 April.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />She also sounded to have addressed the Principal as <b>'prisipal'</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />While interrogating the principal, the video showed Patience asking the school principal if she came with two teachers, who could probably testify to the issue.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mrs. Jonathan asked: <b>“What of two teachers that can tell us that they conducted that exam? Do you come with any…na only you waka come? <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><a href="http://ift.tt/1fprrIG"><img alt="okonjo-iweala-400x300" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-189063" height="225" src="http://ift.tt/1lpVCa5" width="300"/> </a> </p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said World Bank’s “extreme poor nation” rating of Nigeria was based on the large number of poor people living in the country.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Okonjo-Iweala made the clarification when she interacted with newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that World Bank President, Dr Jim Kim, on Wednesday in Washington, announced that Nigeria was among the world’s extremely poor countries.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The other countries that were also rated as Nigeria were India, China, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Pakistan, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Kim had said “the fact is that two-thirds of the world’s extreme poor are concentrated in just five countries: India, China, Nigeria, Bangladesh and the Democratic Republic of Congo.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“If you add another five countries, Indonesia, Pakistan, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya, the total grows to 80 per cent of the extreme poor,” he said</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Okonjo-Iweala explained that the number of poor people in a country irrespective of the country’s level of development was the parameter used to rate Nigeria among nations with high poverty level.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to her, the phenomenon of large number of poor people is peculiar with middle-income countries which Nigeria belonged.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Indian is a middle-income country, one of the largest economies in the world like Nigeria, is a big economy, but the largest number of poor people in the world reside in Indian, China and other places.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Most middle-income countries, including Brazil have large number of poor people that is the reality of today and Nigeria is no exception.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“And when the World Bank president was talking he also talked about those countries. He mentioned that India is doing well and it has a large number of poor people,” she said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“So, we should not try to single Nigeria out. The phenomenon we have in Nigeria is that we are growing but there are poor people everywhere,” she added</p><br /><br/><br /><p>She advised that the focus of Nigerians now should be on the answers to the problem raised by the World Bank and what other countries were doing that Nigeria could learn from so as to improve.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Nobody says that everything is fine but we are learning and where we make some progress like other countries, we should also acknowledge it,” she stressed.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>She said that the Federal Government was making efforts in different areas of the nation’s economy to reduce poverty and improve living standards of the people.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to her, President Goodluck Jonathan has mandated four or five of the ministers to work together to formulate a social safety programme to be implemented for the benefit of the citizens.
