President of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, is not your average president.</p><br /><p>It is commonplace to see some presidents of countries living lavish lifestyles, and in some extreme cases, looting their countries’ finances for personal gain. But not Mujica.</p><br /><p>He is commonly known as the world’s “poorest” president because of his austere lifestyle.</p><br /><p>Mujica rejected the luxurious presidential residence the government provided for him and instead opted to live on his wife’s farm located on a dirt road outside the country’s capital. They have no domestic workers – they do all the farm work by themselves. The only staff they have are two police officers.</p><br /><p>In 2010, his annual personal wealth declaration – mandatory for officials in Uruguay – was $1,800, the value of his Beetle.</p><br /><p>In an interview with BBC, he said:</p><br /><p>“I’ve lived like this most of my life, I can live well with what I have</p><br /><p>I’m called ‘the poorest president’, but I don’t feel poor. Poor people are those who only work to try to keep an expensive lifestyle, and always want more and more</p><br /><p>This is a matter of freedom. If you don’t have many possessions then you don’t need to work all your life like a slave to sustain them, and therefore you have more time for yourself…”</p><br /><p>Mujica also has unique views about poverty alleviation. In the 2012 Rio+20 summit he stated:</p><br /><p>But what are we thinking? Do we want the model of development and consumption of the rich countries? I ask you now: what would happen to this planet if Indians would have the same proportion of cars per household than Germans? How much oxygen would we have left?</p><br /><p>“Does this planet have enough resources so seven or eight billion can have the same level of consumption and waste that today is seen in rich societies? It is this level of hyper-consumption that is harming our planet.</p><br /><p>An Arab sheikh recently offered him $1 million for his Beetle. We no longer want Nigerians to wait for any facilitator or pay heavily to agents before getting visas to India,’’ he said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mr. Rangaiah also said that the commission would henceforth require Nigerian students offered admissions in Indian Colleges and Universities to present original copies of their admission letters, before being issued visas.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The High Commissioner said that the aim was to detect some young Nigerians who use such falsified admission letters to get into India for “different things.’’<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Their admission letters have to now come to the High Commission directly from the Indian colleges and universities. As soon as the man came out and was about to get into his car, two persons on foot approached him and pointed a gun at him. They now called the two other sets of people on motorcycles who approached them and they carried him away on their motorcycle,” the witness said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Almost everybody in this town knows him because he helps us a lot, especially in the area of repairing the town’s water bore holes. Most of the time he uses his own money to buy equipment and repair our boreholes,” he added.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He also said Mr. Nachi trains students on technical and vocational skills free of charge.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The German Embassy in Abuja when contacted over the telephone said it was not yet aware of the incident.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The press officer is not yet in, but at this end we are not aware of something like that,” an official of the embassy revealed on phone.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The embassy also promised to get back with information as soon as it is available.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The spokesperson of the police in Adamawa State, Othman Abubakar, who said he was in a meeting and could only communicate via text messages, is yet to respond to an inquiry at the time of this report.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Adamawa is one of three states under emergency rule due to the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>

Fayemi noted that the record of performance of his administration would continue to be a reference point in the history of the state, stressing that he had succeeded in raising the bar of excellence in governance.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>In a concession speech titled “If This Is the Will of the People”, Fayemi said, “Yesterday, Ekiti State decided. Following the gubernatorial election held in the land of honour, Ekiti State, Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially returned the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the election.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“If this is, indeed, the will of the Ekiti people, I stand in deference to your will. The cultists, said to belong to the Eiye Confraternity, reportedly shot the 24-year-old while he was returning to his hostel after buying a pack of noodles.</p><br /><p>Our correspondent learnt that the Delta State indigene was killed for allegedly abusing the leader of the gang sometime ago. It was gathered that on the fateful day, the cultists waylaid him around 8pm. He was said to have been taken to a dark spot on the campus, while the leader of the gang, one Segun Perry, asked him to open his mouth. Perry was said to have inserted a locally-made gun into Josiah’s mouth and fired a shot which killed him.<br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br />PUNCH Metro learnt that after the Epe Police Division was alerted to the incident, investigations led to the arrest of a student of the institution, 21-year-old Segun Adebayo, and a bricklayer, Azeez Tondunmo. The suspects were said to have been members of the killer squad of the gang who carried out the operation.</p><br /><p>However, the key suspect and leader of the gang, who is on the run, had been declared wanted by the police authorities. Segun and Adebayo were arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court on three counts of murder and belonging to an unlawful society. The police prosecutor, Corporal Cyriacus Osuji told the court that the offence was contrary to sections 231, 221 and 42 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.</p><br /><p>Osuji asked the court to remand the defendants in prison pending the release of legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions. He said, “We apply for the remand of the defendants in prison pursuant to Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011. The defendants, it must be noted, have already confessed to the crime.”</p><br /><p>The defence counsel, F.S. Oladele and Imelda Adebambo, objected to the remand application. The magistrate, E.O. Ogunkanmi, upheld Osuji’s application, adding that the two suspects be remanded in prison for the first 30 days permitted by law while awaiting the outcome of the DPP’s advice. <script type="text/javascript"> <script size='468x60' src='http://srvpub.com/adServe/banners?tid=22528_31474_5' type='text/javascript'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google_ad_client = "ca-pub-6630608044863529"; google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><img alt="Alamieyeseigha-Obasanjo" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-202926" height="250" src="http://ift.tt/1rJvNCb" width="412"/>Recently pardoned ex-governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha Monday berated former President Olusegun Obasanjo, accusing him of knowing the oil thieves in Nigeria, but provided them with protection during his administration.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The former governor also revealed that 50 percent of Nigerian oil was stolen daily and pointed fingers in the direction of foreign embassies, claiming that they have full knowledge of illegal purchase of crude oil stolen from Nigeria.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Alamieyeseigha, who made this known yesterday when officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, appeared before the Senator Adamu Aliero-led Committee on Public Finance and Revenue, of the National Conference, recalled that as governor of Bayelsa State, he facilitated the arrest of some oil thieves, but to his dismay, these persons were left off the hook following what he termed high level conspiracy in high quarters and with the connivance of NNPC officials.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The former governor and a delegate from Bayelsa State also revealed that expatriates in the oil sectors were neck deep in illegal activities in the oil and gas industry and even joined forces with militants to kidnap themselves in the heydays of militancy in the Niger Delta region.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said, “I had one experience. Tankers were loaded in Bayelsa. I got the information and laid ambush for them and arrested them. About 14 big tankers and they were handed over to the police. They were charged to court and the judge ordered that the product should be tested if they were crude oil. NNPC was invited, they came took the sample and after a week the result came out as agro chemical and before I know it all of them were released.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I went to President (Olusegun) Obasanjo. I even accused him that he is the chief bunkerer, that he should not call me again. I also accused him that those that are involved are also sitting in this arena and if he pushed me beyond that I am going to mention names. It became so hot that I was persuaded to follow him to his office. He held my hand and we entered. So there is actually enough intelligence that is open to the presidency. He himself, President Obasanjo, started mentioning names. I said ‘oh, you are the chief bunkerer, I confirm, you know them, don’t call me again.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“In fact expatriates are more involved in the crime than Nigerians. In fact some of them even offer themselves to be arrested so that when there is compensation they have a share of it. They are also involved in kidnapping. They allow themselves to be kidnapped. Oil companies are invited, their home countries will shout that their men are kidnapped; management of oil companies will now make efforts and pay ransom. When the ransom is paid they are released and that money is shared among them. So, it is a high level conspiracy that is going on”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Alamieyeseigha also alleged that retired naval officers were involved in oil theft, explaining that the locals, who were mostly arrested for oil theft, were mere “escorts” as they do not have the international connections to sell stolen crude oil, adding, “The so-called militants we celebrate that tap oil are only employed as escorts. If there is no buyer we will not find a seller. The post retirement job of a senior naval officer is bunkering. None of those boys you see in the Niger Delta have the necessary connections to bring ships to our economic zone to lift. Those that are making the connections are also part of us.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“In fact almost 50 percent of what we produce in this country is being siphoned outside to augment the international market. And where is the oil going? It is going to those countries and they know the type of oil that is coming out from Nigeria. It is different from others. The sulphur content here is very low and they know this but everybody is gaining from it.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Let the federal government send warning letter to all the embassies that are in this country and give them three months. After three months if we see any ship that is not authorized in our economic zone, especially in the Niger Delta, it will be destroyed. Involve the Navy, buy few assault helicopters, buy missiles and after the three months any ship you see inside there by the time you destroy one, two ship no country will allow their ship to ship to enter and so there will be no buyer”, he said</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>
