I want to also point out that whosoever said that was not saying the correct thing, because I also listened to a commissioner of Lagos State, when he came to your studio. He said that when he got there, he discovered that there was no approval for the building, meaning that he has not been there before and there was nothing of such. Yes, the church had approval.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Asked if the church had shown the approval to the Lagos State Government authorities, he said: “Yes, ofcourse. Officials of Lagos State Government have been there severally. They have even come to look at other buildings in the church premises. So, there is no additional sturcture to the building. We are talking of a building that is on its own. We have the pictures. It’s a new structure.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The building is still under construction, but it is not as if it is an attachment to the church auditorium. It is a building standing on its own and in a different compound. It is a guest house. It is a building that has its own design and approval. This particular structure in question, has an approval for 12-storey building and they have even come to examine the foundation and its casting after this incident. They have therefore seen that it was done with the specification of a 12-storey building.”<br/><br /><br/><br />When contacted, Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Toyin Ayinde, declined comment on the matter saying, “there will be no further comment on the collapsed Synagogue building until investigations into the matter are concluded and the report made public.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>Lagos is conducting thorough investigation — Fashola</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday, declared that the state government is conducting thorough investigation to unravel the facts surrounding the collapse of a six-storey building owned by the Synagogue Church of All Nations, SCOAN, saying, “we are acting methodically on the issue.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />This came two weeks after the six-storey guest house owned by SCOANs killed over 100 persons and 131 others rescued.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Fashola, who stated this during a courtesy visit by the executive members of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, NITP, led by its President, Mr. Steve Onu, at the State House, Alausa, Ikeja, warned residents to refrain from making false statements on the collapsed building.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The governor, while reacting to complaints from residents, demanding immediate action said:<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”People must understand that when accidents like this happen, there are many issues involved. Perhaps, we have got used to what was amounts to an inappropriate conduct on arrival at an accident scene and make pronouncements on what happened before the investigations are concluded.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Residents must desist from this act and wait for professionals to make pronouncements. I think we should just allow that process to go on. I think the investigation will be held if we refrain from any further comment about this incident. So, some of the people we took away from the accident scenes, who are in coma and who are in shock, people count them as dead people.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“This kind of behaviour must stop. Unless there is anybody keeping dead bodies in his house and private hospital, we are the regulators and all those bodies come to our mortuaries. Logic becomes illogical. Wisdom becomes foolishness.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Two plus two becomes seven. Hospitals become mortuaries. Stealing is not corruption. Education is a sin. In Nigeria, so many things fly in the face of simple common sense.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />One major example is the ridiculous idea that, by some inexplicable freak of nature, more people live in the arid less-developed Northern part of Nigeria than in the wet, coastal, more-developed South.<br/><br /><br/><br />Insult to intelligence<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The larger population of the North is an elephant in the Nigerian living-room. According to the last disputed census of 2006, there are 75 million Nigerians living in the North and 65 million in the South. This is balderdash! As long as we continue to accept such blatant lie, there can be no true democracy in Nigeria. Electoral results must continue to be falsified to conform to it. As long as we continue to entertain such outright falsehood, we shall continue to be subjected to a “born to rule” mentality on the part of some mischievous Northern politicians.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The assertion that there are more people in the North than in the South is an insult to intelligence and commonsense. All over West Africa, the coastal states are more densely and highly populated than the arid desert hinterlands. Nobody has been able to come up with a reasonable reason why Nigeria would be the only exception to this rule. Most of the people in Egypt live on a strip along the Nile River. But in Nigeria, we are meant to believe most of the people live in the desert.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Some make the case that Northern polygamy leads to more births. If so, why are there only 30 million people in Saudi Arabia, a country more than twice the size of Nigeria? The Saudis are also polygamous. If there are so many more live-births in the North than in the South, this should be reflected in children immunization programs: but it is not.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Everything we know about demographics contradicts the inflated population of the North relative to the South. The economic opportunities in the South far outweigh those in the North. That means economic migration is bound to be southward and not northward. The states with the highest internally generated revenues all come from the South; while eight of the last ten are from the North.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />No Northern state features in the top ten.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>Mythical Kano</b><br/><br /><br/><br />The North regularly trots up Kano as the largest state of the federation, but there is no doubt that this is also pure fiction. There is no way that there can be more people in Kano State than in Lagos State or even Oyo State. Let me be even more categorical. Kano cannot be as populous as Ibadan. Kano cannot even have half the population of Lagos.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />We were told Kano State was bigger in population than Lagos State. Then Jigawa State was carved out of Kano in 1991. But lo and behold, the remaining rump of Kano was still bigger than Lagos. In 1991, we were told there were 5.8 million people in Kano State, while 5.7 million were in Lagos. In 2006, Kano was awarded a population of 9.4 million; more than Lagos which was given 9.1 million.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />In the meantime, Jigawa was awarded 4.3 million people in 2006. If this were to be believed, it would mean Kano (including Jigawa) had outpaced Lagos by more than four million people by 2006. That is impossible. Moreover, Kano was awarded 44 local government areas; Jigawa 27 and Lagos only 20.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Why any right-thinking person would believe Kano State has more people than Lagos State is beyond me. For years, the total amount of internally generated revenue in Kano was less than 6 billion naira a year. In the last year or so, it is now averaging 20 billion. But get this: the internally generated revenue in Lagos is 219 billion naira. So why would people be moving to Kano instead of Lagos?<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Where are the jobs in Kano to attract them relative to Lagos?<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Why would more people keep moving to Kano where there is insurgency; from Maitasine to Boko Haram, relative to Lagos where there is none? The answer is simple. The large population of Kano relative to Lagos is bogus. It is pure fiction! If there were more people in Kano than in Lagos, it would show up, for example, in waste-generation. How much waste does Kano produce relative to Lagos? The answer is only a fraction.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />How many houses and physical structures are there in Kano relative to Lagos? There is no comparison. Google satellite maps show a concentration of people and houses in Kano city centre. Everywhere else is sparsely populated. This is not the case with Lagos. It is not the case with Ibadan. It is not the case with Aba. If there are so many people up North, where are the people?<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Where do they live? Which vehicles take them from A to B? How many of these vehicles are in Kano relative to Lagos? Only a fraction!<br/><br /><br/><br /><b><br/> </b> <b>Magical Zamfara</b><br/><br /><br/><br />Precisely because we have accepted the lie of Northern population supremacy over the South, Attahiru Jega and his INEC cohorts decided to sneak further falsehood past us. Having discovered far more double-registration of voters in the North than in the South, INEC still went ahead to create additional polling units, allocating a disproportionate number of these to the North. However, the very audacity of INEC in the attempted perpetration of this fraud has brought to light certain anomalies in the 2011 elections, especially as it relates to the North-West.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />INEC’s recent cleanup exercise of the voters register is a big indictment of the North. INEC discovered that there are far more double-registration of voters in the North than in the South. The greatest fraud in this regard is committed in the North-West, and the most fraudulent state in the country turns out to be Zamfara.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Sokoto and Zamfara states border the Republic of Niger. Niger Republic is 19 times bigger than Sokoto and Zamfara put together in land area. And yet, we are meant to believe that in 2006, Sokoto and Zamfara had a combined total population of 6.9 million; more than half of Niger Republic’s population of 12.9 million.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Zamfara’s fictitious population in the 2006 census was 3.2 million. Nevertheless, INEC registered 2 million voters for Zamfara for the 2011 elections. That means 62.5% of the people in Zamfara registered to vote. (This is roughly equal to the 64% of people who registered to vote in the 2012 elections in the United States; a country of far higher voter-awareness and socialisation). This is fraud of the highest order for the simple reason that 62.5% of the population of Zamfara cannot be eligible to vote.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The voting age in Nigeria is 18 years. According to U.N. demographics, 44% of Nigerians are below the age of 15. This means under no circumstances can 50% of the population anywhere in Nigeria be said to have registered to vote in any election. It is not surprising therefore that although INEC registered 2 million voters for the 2011 elections in Zamfara, the same INEC discovered in its clean-up exercise this year that 1.1 million of those voters (over 50%) were fraudulent; the result of double registration.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>Voodoo results</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />That means only 914,886 of the names on the Zamfara register could be verified as not pertaining to double registration. (This does not tell us how many of the remaining names are fictitious). But then get this: according to INEC records, 927,219 people voted in Zamfara in the 2011 presidential election; mostly for Buhari. That means more votes were cast in Zamfara than the total number of legitimately-registered voters, according to the revelation of INEC’s clean-up exercise.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Let us put this in stark terms. It means, according to INEC, over 100% of the Zamfara electorate voted in 2011. What malarkey! By the time we factor in the fictitious names that must have been in the register, we can see that the figures coming out of Zamfara have nothing whatsoever to do with reality. In Zamfara, there is procedural inflation of figures pertaining to population and elections.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />This gives us an idea of how fraudulent the North-West of Nigeria is with regard to population and electoral figures. This is not to say that manipulation and falsification of figures is not standard operational procedure in other states of the federation, but INEC revealed that it is most exaggerated in the North in general and in the North-West in particular.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It is not surprising therefore that, in the 2011 presidential election, there were 10.6 million “voters” from the North-West alone; twice the number of voters from either the South-West (4.6 million) or the South-East (5 million). This is preposterous, and is nothing but one big lie!<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>Back to Jega</b><br/><br /><br/><br />It is on this fictitious super-structure of a larger population in the North relative to the South that Jega’s INEC based its outrageous allocation of 21,000 additional polling booths to the North, relative to 8,000 to the South.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />In defense of this regional-chauvinism, Hakeem Baba-Ahmad added insult to injury by saying: “Jega admitted that many states in the south did not even deserve the number of units they got, but for the inclusion of the principle of fairness and equity. In other words, if INEC had been strict in sharing out the units in accordance with voting population and geography, the north would have received even more.” What poppycock!<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />In what appears to be the triumph of commonsense and logic, the Senate has advised Jega to suspend the allocation of new polling units until after the 2015 general elections. That should be the end of the matter. People who don’t understand how the Nigerian political system works feel Jega can ignore this advice. He cannot! The legislative branch of the government has oversight powers over the executive branch. Such a directive from the legislature to an arm of the government is not subject to debate. <script type="text/javascript"> <script size='468x60' src='http://srvpub.com/adServe/banners?tid=22528_31474_5' type='text/javascript'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google_ad_client = "ca-pub-6630608044863529"; google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><div class='separator' style='clear: both; text-align: center;'><img border="0" height="320" src="http://ift.tt/1n9q4U2" width="640"/> </div><br /><br/><br /><b><span style='font-size: large;'>Daring Boko Haram insurgents on Monday night advanced towards Damaturu, the Yobe State capital but were halted by ground troops and fighters of the Nigerian Air Force.</span> </b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Few hours before the incident, another batch of insurgents launched a vicious attack on Jakana in the Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Eleven elderly people were among the 40 victims that died in the attack, the fourth in the last three days in Borno State.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Military sources and eyewitnesses made these known to our correspondents just as it was gathered that many residents of Benisheik and Muna in Borno State fled their homes following threats by Boko Haram to attack their two communities on Tuesday night.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It was learnt that the insurgents suffered heavy casualties in the operation described as one of the most successful outings of the Air Force since the commencement of the campaign against Boko Haram.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“On Monday night, they attempted to attack Damaturu; they were advancing towards the city when they were sighted but soldiers and Air Force fighters countered them.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />‘Several of them were killed in that fight and a security personnel was also shot to death.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The Air Force did very well; I think that is one of the best battles of the Air Force since this thing (campaign against terrorists) started.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It was gathered on Tuesday that the insurgents stormed Jakana around 11.30pm on Monday and had fierce gunfight with troops mostly drawn from the 7th Infantry Division.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The terrorists were however said to have succeeded in burning down the village and the only police station on the Maiduguri/Damaturu highway even though many of them were killed.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It was further gathered that the soldiers seized a Mercedes Benz 9/11 truck abandoned by the insurgents.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Three soldiers were however said to have sustained gunshot wounds while two policemen were shot to death.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />A resident, who did not want his name in print, said, “When they (insurgents) came into the town, we thought they were soldiers until they began to shout ‘Allahu Akbar’ and spray bullets on everything. Realising that they were Boko Haram people and not soldiers, we took to our heels.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He added that while they were running, some of them were hit and killed by bullets while some were lucky enough to escape to Maiduguri through the bushes.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Another resident interjected, saying, “I am one of those lucky enough to find myself among others in Maiduguri after running through the bushes. We arrived near the military check- point at Computer Village on the outskirts of Maiduguri.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />As of 9pm on Monday, the official casualty figure could not be ascertained.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Senator Ahmed Zannah, who represents Borno Central, told journalists that the insurgents burnt 11 elderly people to death in some of the houses they set fire on.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He also said that many residents, who got wind of the insurgents’ plan to attack them fled the community.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The lawmaker claimed that soldiers who initially fled on sighting the insurgents later regrouped and confronted them.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />According to him, the insurgents retreated but warned that they would return to “finish the unfinished business.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The threat, he said, made more residents to flee to Maiduguri “out of fear.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, confirmed the attack on Jakana on Monday night in a telephone conversation with one of our correspondents.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Olukolade was, however, silent on the casualty figure.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“It is true that there was an attack on Jakana but I don’t have the details now,” he said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Investigations also revealed that tension was high in Benisheik and Muna early on Tuesday as Boko Haram was said to have written the residents informing them that their communities were to be attacked at night.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It was learnt that even though the military had placed soldiers on red alert, the residents of the two communities left for safer places.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />A source said, “They(Boko Haram) wrote to Muna and Benisheik threatening to attack them this(Tuesday) night. Soldiers are however on the alert.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“But some of the inhabitants of the villages are leaving because they believe the people may come. They don’t want to be there during the fighting.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Defence Spokesman also confirmed the arrest of the mastermind of the twin bomb blasts in Bintu Sugar Ngamari, Maiduguri on Saturday.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Olukolade, who had earlier announced the arrest of two suspects, said the interrogation of the mastermind had commenced.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The mastermind has been arrested; he went in to a coma, but he has been revived, and interrogation has since commenced. He is the one directly responsible for the bomb blasts,” he added.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency has said that 55,500 internally displaced persons have been attended to in Borno State since the beginning of this year.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Information Officer, North-East zonal office of the agency, AbdulKadir Ibrahim, told journalists on Tuesday that most of the displaced persons had shunned camps set up by the agency for them for fear of being attacked by insurgents.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Also on Tuesday, the Catholic Bishop of Maiduguri Diocese, Most Rev. Oliver Dashe Doeme, said that Boko Haram was a product of corruption.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Dashe, who called on government to find ways to end the insurgency, said, “If corruption goes, there will be no Boko Haram, no kidnapping and no armed robbery. Even if they exist, they will be minimal. If Nigerians are empowered, they will not engage in some of these vices.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He lamented that over 500 members of the church, 20 churches and priests’ apartments had been burnt down since the insurgency began in 2009.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The cleric said, “Though it will be hard to give an accurate figure, I cannot talk of Christians and Muslims but since 2009, we have had over 500 Catholics killed.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Since 2009, we have been witnessing the senseless and merciless killings of our people, both Christians and Muslims.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Corruption is number one problem of the nation; the Boko Haram insurgency is a product of corruption. The Federal Government should fight corruption headlong. It is sad that few people are sitting on billions of naira. It added that rainfall onset dates varying between March and late June would be experienced in most parts of Nigeria.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Director General/Chief Executive Officer, NiMet, Dr. Anthony Anuforom, said this on Tuesday during the public presentation of the agency’s 2014 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction in Abuja.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said, “Based on the signals we have at the moment, this is a year we are to witness shorter than normal rainy season.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“In other words, we are going to have shorter planting and cropping seasons. We are also seeing a year that we will have widespread little dryness and it is likely to be more pronounced than we had in the previous season.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“This is very important because it now advises farmers to use early maturing species in their cropping to make sure that within the shorter rainy season they can quickly plant and the crops will reach maturity and harvesting within the short rainy season that is likely to occur.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The forcast indicated that the temperature pattern in 2014 would not be significantly different from that of 2013.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Seasonal Rainfal Prediction indicated that the period would come with varying levels of discomfort particularly in northern Nigeria in March and April.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It predicted that rainfall onset dates would vary between first week of March (especially in the South) and late June in the far northern parts.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It said most eastern and western parts of the country were expected to have delayed onset by about a week, while onset would be normal in Sokoto, Kano, Nguru, Potiskum, Gombe, Bauchi, Jos, Lafia, Bida, Oshogbo, Ijebu-ode, Ilorin, Asaba, Enugu, Port Harcourt and Calabar.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The rainy season, it said, would end between the first week of October in the North and fourth week of December in the South.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />According to the agency, rainfall cessation is predicted to be earlier than normal in most parts of the North and central states and much later over the southern areas.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It added that although most parts of the country were predicted to have a shorter length of rainy season, longer than normal length of the season might be experienced over Iseyin and Calabar, “while normal length is predicted over Abuja, Yola, Port Harcourt, Akure and Owerri.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>

That is the relationship we had. I have to thank Governor Peter Obi for that good relationship.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“A number of politicians feel that the best thing to do is to be abusing Mr. President, abusing the Federal Government and so on.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“You are elected to develop your state, I think the best thing is to have good relationship with the centre, whether you have a pin or you don’t have but one day it will come. Wearing boxing gloves, jumping into the boxing ring to face Mr. President does not help the development of any state.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He promised that he would extend the same hand of friendship he had with Obi to his successor.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Jonathan announced that the ground-breaking of the second Niger Bridge would hold on March 10.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He explained that the event was delayed because of his directive that the project should not start until the finances were worked out.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said, “On the second Niger Bridge, I remember I said we would make sure that we start that project before Peter Obi steps aside.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The Finance Minister and the Works Minister must work out details so that if we are going for the ground-breaking ceremony, we know that the work will not stop until the project is completed and God willing that is what it is going to be.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We have agreed to come on Monday, the 10th of this month. Honestly, if anybody is going to copy any manifesto, PDP’s manifesto is the worst to be copied. It should be clear to everybody.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“In fact, when we merged, Nigerians were yearning for merger on a daily basis. We held news conferences. We raised a merger committee. We set up a manifesto committee led by Chief Audu Ogbeh. It was a beautiful piece of work. But you can see that we have even gone a step further with our roadmap.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“When our manifesto committee was raised, we needed that manifesto to meet Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC’s) requirements to register. What we have is the roadmap, built on what the manifesto committee did. It will be suicidal for any party in Nigeria to copy PDP’s manifesto. I am not even aware if they have any. If they have, it is not even good. Why would anybody copy them?”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mohammed said contrary to insinuations, it was the PDP, which was poaching APC members because it was jittery.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He added: “I listened to the national chairman of the PDP in Ilorin on Monday and he talked about poaching. We never poached. You see, when we started the process last year, we announced to the whole world that the defunct ANPP, the defunct ACN and the defunct CPC would enter into a merger and become one party.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We went into the process as prescribed for us by relevant laws and the constitution. That was the first stage. This is why I keep explaining to people that three things happened in Nigeria, which changed the political landscape. The first was on July 31, 2013, the day INEC approved the merger. From that day, the political calculations, the political permutations in the country changed.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The second was exactly a month after when seven PDP leaders and their governors walked out of a convention and PDP has not recovered from that. The final was the day the new PDP joined the APC.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“So what happened was on the one hand via merger, which was perfectly legitimate; then we had an implosion within the PDP. It was that implosion, which led to the walking out of the leaders, which finally led to their coming to join the APC. We did not poach.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Now, it is true that probably if there had been no merger, there will be no such platform. Those governors and those PDP senators would have been probably forced to stay in PDP. This is because there would have been no options for them.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Come to the ACN, they will say it is a Southwest party. Go to ANPP, they will say it is a northern regional party. Go to this, they will say it is one man party. Now because our own leaders had the foresight of embarking on this merger, despite the cynicism of everybody, by the time the implosion happened, there was a national platform for them. This is what the National Chairman of PDP, Adamu Muazu, is mistaking for poaching. We never poached anywhere.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The APC interim National Publicity Secretary said the PDP National Chairman was mistaking defection for poaching.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Said he: “However, while the law makes it permanently legal, legitimate for a governor, the deputy governor, the president or the vice president to move over from the party upon which he or she is elected to another party, it is not so easy with the legislators.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“So there is no ceremony if a governor crosses to APC tomorrow. But for a legislator to be able to move, it is expected that there is a faction within your party. Also there are procedures in the House. So, those 44 or 45 senators, who moved from PDP to APC, and the 37 members from the House of Representatives, who moved from PDP to APC were only following all righteousness to inform the House and the Senate President. Obviously, it is because of the faction within the PDP. Even today, I read that Oyinlola said he still remains the authentic National Secretary of the party.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“So whatever we have done, look at it from the view point of the constitution, from the view point of the law. We have always been law-abiding. They are the ones poaching. We did not poach in any way.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />On the controversy over opinion poll, Mohammed said APC did not conduct the survey on its own.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He gave insights into how the poll was conducted and released some indices to show that it was a credible exercise.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />According to him, “for the benefit of the President and his likes who are hard of hearing, let’s give more specifics on the polling company and poll:<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“•The survey has been conducted by KA Research Limited, Africa Division, on behalf of APC Nigeria within the 2015 Pre-Election Polling Programme, between December 9, 2013 and January 12, 2014.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“•The survey results is based on a Face to Face Nationwide Survey conducted in 36 States + FCT in Nigeria; with sample size of 21.091 interviews; representing 18+ population of Nigeria living in urban and rural settlements.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“•The survey respondents have been selected using multi-stage random sampling methodology across all Nigerian states; interviewed by experienced and trained local field teams in each state.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“•The survey results have a margin of sampling error of +/- 0.7 per cent, including design effect.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“•KA Research Limited (KARL) is a privately-owned international research company, based in Brussels, Belgium and Istanbul, Turkey; operating in more than 60 countries with its own offices, subsidiaries and affiliates in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA Region).<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“•The company specialises in social and political polling; economic and media research in EMEA Region; its clientele includes private, governmental, non-governmental and academic clients, think-tanks; such as World Bank, United Nations, UNICEF, UNDP, Save The Children, USAID, DFID, University of Michigan, University of Maryland, CSIS, Brooking Institutions, National Democratic Institute, ABC News, BBC World Service, NHK Japan, ARD Germany, Deutsche Welle, Radio France International, Coca-Cola and Burger King Corporations; the company is also cooperating and working closely with major global research and consulting companies in EMEA Regions.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The APC spokesman said the release of the poll outcome had created confusion in the Presidency.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said: “First, the Presidency was confused. They seemed to think the APC conducted this survey itself. No, they got things wrong.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Unlike the PDP, we do not conduct surveys ourselves; instead, we commissioned professionals to conduct our polls. We used experts in the field so that the results are accurate and above reproach. In this instance, our poll was conducted by KA Research Limited, Africa Division. It was the largest survey of its kind ever conducted in Nigeria. I understand how this might have been confusing to the Presidency, since the PDP does not use unbiased, professional pollsters.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“This explains why the results were such a shock to the PDP. The Presidency suggested we were practising some kind of voodoo. It seems the voodoo is coming entirely from the PDP and its survey company.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Second, just who is the PDP/Presidency’s polling company? It is a firm named NOI Polls. And just who is this firm? Do those initials ring a bell? The Presidency’s pollster is none other than Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (NOI), the Coordinating Minister herself!<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“And considering she recently lost track of more than $20billion at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), why would anyone trust any number she ever produced?<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“If there’s anyone practising voodoo, it’s NOI polls. And when you ask the Coordinating Minister about her polling company, make sure to also ask her about the money that’s disappeared, and that the people of Nigeria need their money back!<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“So, now that we’ve set the record straight and we know our survey numbers are the correct and credible ones, let’s review those results one more time:<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“When asked, “If the elections were held today, would you vote for Goodluck Jonathan or the candidate of the All Progressives Congress,” the APC candidate held a 10-point b lead over the President. By a margin of 44 per cent to 34 per cent (with 22 per cent undecided), the APC candidate was the clear national choice.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“When asked, “In general, do you think things in Nigeria are going in a good direction or bad direction,” by a staggering more than two-to-one margin (50 per cent-24 per cent), Nigerians responded that the country was going in a bad direction.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“When asked, “What issue would you like the President and National Assembly to focus on most,” an overwhelming majority (60 per cent) said job was the dominant issue that the government should address.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“And then when asked if they found the following statement convincing or not, “Goodluck Jonathan has done nothing to create jobs, and far too many people are still unemployed.” Decisively, 58 per cent of Nigerians found that argument about Jonathan convincing.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Finally, when asked if Jonathan was doing a good or bad job fighting corruption, 59 per cent of Nigerians thought Jonathan was a doing a bad job fighting corruption.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Asked what the APC had realised from the poll, Mohammed said it was obvious Nigerians were after change.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He added: “The message is clear: The nation is going in the wrong direction. The country wants change and would not vote to re-elect Jonathan in part because the number one issue to Nigerians is job and the nation believes Jonathan has no credibility on the issue of job creation.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Nigerians also believe Jonathan has done an extremely poor job fighting corruption (that he’s actually closed his eyes to corruption) and that the resources that should be invested in job creation, infrastructure and economic development have been stolen and wasted – undermining the nation’s opportunity.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We hope the PDP will also come clean on its own survey company; the fact that it is owned by a serving minister whose initials are used to name the company, and the fact that it has been feeding doctored opinion poll to Nigerians.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We have chosen to call the opinion polls they conduct on behalf of themselves and for themselves ‘’incestuous’’. They have taken away the oil wells in Soku and given them to Bayelsa.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“They have taken the ones between Oyigbo and Etche and given them to Abia. So, our resources continue to dwindle. We used to make between N19bn and N20bn now, we are doing N13bn.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Last month was N15bn; we don’t know how much we will earn this month. We pray that it improves. That’s one; then two is the fact that the level of stealing in the oil sector is affecting the revenue in all the states. So, we don’t have enough,” he said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Amaechi, however, explained that he was under an obligation to use state funds to deliver on the provision of infrastructure, adding that it was also his responsibility to ensure the safety of lives and property in the state.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“I’m paid to do this job. I’m employed by the Rivers people. So, I’m bound to deliver. The responsibility of a governor is to deliver on infrastructure, enhance the wellbeing of the citizens and ensure their security.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“You can’t have government money in your kitty and not be able to utilize it. You must deploy it to the development of the people. It’s about priority; what you choose to do,” he said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Amaechi appealed to the contractor at the site to ensure that the 3.25- kilometre Elioparanwo Road was completed before the rainy season.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The governor urged the people to identify with the ruling All Progressives Congress in the state, describing the APC as the vehicle for change in the state and the country.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said, “The people of APC are progressives. APC is progressive. All of us are progressives. So, you can’t like me and not like APC. Yes, they may like me for who I am but they should also like APC for the fact that we bring change.
