Below is how NAN reports yesterday’s court hearing.</div><br /><p><a id="more" name="more"> </a>A Wuse Zone 6 Senior Magistrates’ Court, Abuja on Wednesday fixed April 2 for hearing in the criminal case brought against Nigerian boxer, Bash Ali, and four other accused persons. Meanwhile Bash Ali has refused to leave jail despite meeting bail conditions. The four others are Gabriel Ikyowe; Timothy Ugbede; Daniel Otoski and Jones Ebele.</p><br /><div class='MsoNormal'> </div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'> </div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'>They were arraigned by the police on Feb. 19 on a six-count charge of joint act of abetment, criminal trespass, and obstruction in public way. They were also charge with criminal trespass, causing obstruction in public way, wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation. The prosecuting police officer, Sgt. Bulus Samuel said the charges contravened the provisions of sections 79, 85, 348, 194, 256, and 397(b) of the Penal Code. When case was first mentioned on Feb. 19, all the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Magistrate subsequently granted them bail in the sum of N1 million each with one surety each who must be a civil servant not below salary GL 10. According to the Magistrate, the sureties must be reliable, resident within the court jurisdiction and must swear an affidavit to substantiate reliable means of livelihood. Bello adjourned the matter for hearing to March 4, adding the sureties, who must be civil servants, must produce their first appointment letter and their last promotion letter.</div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'> </div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'>At the resumption of hearing on Wednesday, the Principal Witness 1, Mr Bisong Peter, told the court that he and some of NEXIM Bank workers were assaulted by the accused persons.</div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'> </div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'>Peter is the Chief Security Officer to NEXIM Bank.</div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'> </div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'>He said this under cross examination led by counsel to the accused persons, Mr Anthony Agbolahan.</div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'> </div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'>According to him, Ali, his colleagues and others now at large, disrupted NEXIM Bank operations by preventing workers and customers from entering the premises during their protest on Feb. 18.</div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'> </div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'>“Ali called himself a suicide bomber and claimed that he was coming to bomb the bank.</div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'> </div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'>“As a security agent, my colleagues and I have to be on alert.</div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'> </div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'>“They came on a protest carrying placard with all kinds of inscriptions against corruption; we stopped them but they were still able to gain entry into the premises.</div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'> </div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'>“When they were disturbing and making noise, we called the police who later came to our rescue.</div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'> </div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'>“Ali had visited NEXIM Bank several times but am not aware the purpose of his visits,’’ Peter said.</div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'> </div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'>He, however, said that during one of such visits, he had a meeting with the bank’s management and later left in anger”.</div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'> </div><br /><div class='MsoNormal'>Defence counsel, Mr Anthony Agbolahan, however asked Peter whether he was aware that Ali and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) were planning a boxing championship. Agbolahan also sought from the CSO whether Ali and other attacked the bank’s Managing Director, to which the witness also answered in the negative. Rodgers embraced the day fully making sure that everything was to her liking, adding that: “I’d dreamed of a perfect wedding dress since I was small, I made it myself for the ceremony. And even if the elections must hold at all, they must be held on their own terms: No PVCs, No Car Readers, No Jega, and the military must be deployed to intimidate voters!<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />These dangerous conditionalities by the ruling party, the PDP, and the Jonathan Administration have been playing out publicly, no thanks to the inauspicious comments by elements of the ruling party, who could no longer hide their disdain for credible polls and, indeed, for democracy itself.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />But what has not played out openly are some of the criminal and unlawful actions being secretly hatched by the PDP and the Jonathan Administration to rig the forthcoming general elections and perpetuate themselves in power.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The handwriting is clear: This Administration knows it can never win in a free, fair and credible elections because of its appalling record in office. Nigerians want change through the ballot box, and they are determined to effect that change with their PVCs.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Let me now take you through some of those evil plots being hatched to deny the people of Nigerians their right to vote for change.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />1. There is a plot to transfer a humongous amount of money into the bank account of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, and then claim that the money came from Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC in order to justify the ongoing plan to sack Prof. Jega so he won’t organize the elections.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Beyond Jega, there is also a plan to credit the bank accounts of some key national institutions with huge amounts of money purportedly from our party, the APC, ostensibly to compromise those institutions.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />2. There is plan to use some political parties that are satellites of the PDP to push for the postponement of the elections again. The plot is to get the parties to address a press conference to say the elections should not hold in the North-east until Sept. 2015 because of the ongoing counter-insurgency battle there. The intention is to make sure Jega’s tenure expires before the polls, so that they can appoint a malleable card-carrying member of the PDP as INEC Chair to conduct the polls.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />3. There a plan to use the security agencies to intimidate key opposition leaders as well as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and telecommunications service providers to disrupt voice and data transmission, especially in APC strongholds, on election day.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />As we have said earlier, the telephones of our leaders have been bugged and their movements are being daily monitored.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Top on the list of the security agencies to be used against the opposition is the DSS, which will be used to compel all Resident Electoral Commissioners in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to hand over the names and telephone numbers of all INEC’s regular and ad<br/><br /><br/><br />hoc staff who will conduct the elections, as part of the Jonathan Administration’s rigging plans.<br/><br /><br/><br />It is no longer news that a signal has been sent to all state commands of the DSS to get the list of all INEC Returning Officers and Adhoc Staff before March 10th.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />4. There is also the ongoing illegal recruitment over 500 new cadets into one of the country’s security outfits, 50% of whom are from the home state of the outfit’s top brass, in violation of the provisions of the Constitution, especially as the recruitment does not reflect the Federal Character<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />5. Nocturnal meetings are being held between various heads of national security agencies and the leadership of the PDP to undermine the coming elections;<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />6. The Presidency has retained the services of two Israelis and a Belgian who are currently holed up in the Aso Rock Villa to hack and corrupt INEC computers on election day, with the trio having already been paid 25 percent of their contract fees upfront.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />7. There is an ongoing effort to compromise the card reader, which the Jonathan Administration sees as inimical to its rigging plans.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />8. Huge funds are being provided for retired and serving security personnel to buy up PVCs, with the hope that they can be used once the card reader is compromised. They are on their own and represent themselves, the few members of their groups and families.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Millions of Igbo in Lagos are not part of this and we wonder how much it will take to settle all Igbo in Lagos. Those who have partaken in the sharing of dollars and naira are on their own, if we must restate this fact. They should not drag Ndigbo to their illicit business,” said Eze, who spoke under the aegis of the Association for the Defence Of Igbo Interests In Lagos.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He added that “we are concerned that the greedy and selfish interests of some self-serving Igbo masquerading as leaders of Igbo people and self serving groups stand to endanger the Igbo in Lagos in the near future hence we issued this disclaimer.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />At the press conference held in Ikeja, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, Eze said the Igbo in Lagos would vote for the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had done nothing for them.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said APC in Lagos has shown through actions and deeds that it understood what leadership was all about and had shown leadership in Lagos and made Lagos a destination for all Nigerians, especially for Ndigbo when the Federal Government under PDP had abdicated its responsibility to Nigerians.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“APC government in Lagos has made the issue of security the number one agenda and this has made it possible for Igbo businesses to thrive in Lagos. This led the United Nations to declare Nigeria Ebola free. text-align: center;'> </div><br /><br/><br /><div style='margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;'><img src="http://ift.tt/1GYMRLI"/> </div><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><div><span style='font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;'><span style='font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;'><br/> </span> </span> </div><br /><br/><br /><div><span style='font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;'><br/> </span> </div><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday morning agreed that he has a serious contender in the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, General Muhammadu Buhari.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a>He however said he was not losing sleep over how the presidential election would turn out on 28 March.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Jonathan, who spoke on a national television programme monitored by our correspondent, noted that in 2011, it was a smooth ride for his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, unlike in 2015.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />According to him, in 2011, there were four strong parties, the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, the PDP, the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, and the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, and they all shared the total votes cast.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said it was easy for the PDP then, because the party had widespread base and had members in every polling unit of the federation.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said though the PDP is still the dominant party in Nigeria, it now has a formidable opponent in the All Progressives Congress, a merger of all the CPC, ACN, ANPP, and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The President said he was not disturbed about the outcome of the 28 March election because most of those keeping the APC strong are elements of the PDP and that without them, the APC, which he called the opposition, would fall like “a pack of cards.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He also gave the impression that some politicians are scared of his rising profile and that is why they have brainwashed some people, who are ignorant, to pelt him with stones in some parts of the country.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Jonathan also noted that it is more challenging for a sitting President to secure a second term.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said this is because at the stage of seeking re-election, the people would want to know what the President had done with the first mandate given to him.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We must have promised a number of things and people expect their lives to change overnight,” he said but quickly reminded people that it takes sometime for policies to materialise into projects and success on the part of the government.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Using an illustration, he said if a man that has no job is promised one by a candidate, he would expect the job to come once the candidate wins.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Where the job becomes unavailable, the person becomes angry with the government.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The President used the opportunity to list the achievements of his government in the transport and other sectors, adding that the government was working to boost the economy which he said had really progressed.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said the government was working to get facilities to enable electricity distribution companies to get and install metres for Nigerians.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He also disclosed that a major part of the amount derived from the privatisation of power in the country was used to pay staff of the old National Electric Power Authority, NEPA, as well as resolve other legal issues.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He promised that issues related to power generation would be resolved in the next 12 months.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“I am very hopeful that I will take a ride from Abuja to Kaduna,” he said of the state of repairs of the road adding that the light rail project of the government is going on well and is being funded from a loan arrangement.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He also said his government had made a mark in the aviation sector and that even though the country had reached the height he expects, he hopes the citizens would get there.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Explaining the auto policy of the government, he said it was to encourage those who are wealthy to assist the government while boosting patronage of domestic vehicles.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We are doing a number of things…The rise in the GDP is not about oil. In terms of the general wealth of the country, oil is very little, but it makes about 70 percent of the amount government needs to pay salaries and do other things.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“This government has been a friend of the private sector, because without the private sector, you can’t even employ. We are already expanding and diversifying the economy,” he said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He noted that even though there pockets of violence in some parts of the country ahead of the elections, the recent accord reached by politicians for peaceful elections, have assisted the situation of the country.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The result is not so obvious, but it is helping.
