With less than 24 hours to the gubernatorial elections in Lagos State, the All Progressive Congress (APC), candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode will receive a massive boast after he defeated his fiercest rival, Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the opinion poll conducted by NigerianEye.

In the opinion poll conducted by NigerianEye.com , readers were asked to vote for their preferred choice between APC's Akinwunmi Ambode and PDP's Jimi Agbaje, and decide who they think would emerge as the winner of the 2015 Lagos State Governorship Elections on Saturday.

Out of the total votes (2905) APC's Akinwunmi Ambode polled 1899 votes, representing 65% of the total votes, while PDP's Jimi Agbaje polled 1006 votes representing about 34% of the total votes.

How Accurate Are Opinion Polls In Nigeria?

Before the elections, opinion polls are often used to predict the likely winners during elections. According to BBC in its guideline on opinion polls, surveys, questionnaires, votes and straw polls, online polls do not totally or always represent public opinion. It categorically does not represent public opinion – at best, it may coincide with it. Opinion polls are useful in knowing public opinions.

This was not different in Nigeria as NigerianEye.com has organized various opinion polls in the last few months, in a bid to gather public opinion, and predict the outcome of elections.

Last December a poll was organized by NE where readers voted Buhari to emerge as the APC presidential candidate

In February Nigerianeye.com also conducted a presidential opinion poll where readers favoured Buhari to defeat Jonathan at the presidential poll

This proves that opinion polls may sometimes be accurate and can be used to judge outcome of elections.

Opinion polls in future elections may serve as yardstick for politicians to reassess their campaign and strategise for victory.
