The Federal Government may release some detained commanders of the Boko haram sect in exchange for the abducted Chibok schoolgirls.
However, it has to be noted that no commander has been released yet following the ceasefire deal reached between the sect and the government on Friday.
According to a security source, the current ceasefire deal will see the FG swap some prisoners in exchange for the girls.
The source also revealed that as part of the conditions in the truce, the FG was to take the first step in activating the peace deal by announcing a ceasefire, while the sect would take the next step by releasing the girls.
“The deal would involve prisoners’ exchange but there would be categorisation.
“The Federal Government has taken the first step; that is, its own side of the deal, which is to declare the ceasefire. That has been done by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh.
“Definitely, some of the commanders would be released but none has been released so far; most of those who committed minor offences will be released. It is actually a decision for the government to make,” the source said.
In a similar development, representatives of the sect and the government are expected to meet in Ndjamena, capital of Chad, on Tuesday to work on the details and terms of the ceasefire agreement reached between both parties.
