President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday received the baton of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Abuja.
Decked in a white track suit and fez cap, Jonathan received the baton from the Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, before handling it over to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Muhammed, for its onward journey to other parts of the FCT.
Speaking during the short ceremony held at the forecourt of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Jonathan said it was gratifying that Nigeria was fully involved in the Queen’s Baton Relay, which was flagged off by Queen Elizabeth II at the Buckingham Palace in October 2013.
He expressed the confidence that the Nigerian delegation to this year’s Games, holding in Glasgow, would perform better than the nation’s appearance at previous championships.
Vice President Namadi Sambo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim; top officials of the National Sports Commission, the Commonwealth Games delegation and other top government officials witnessed the brief ceremony.
