Kai, citizens, you’re better than this!<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Gboyega Ajibade, in his reaction, described the Oba’s statement as unfortunate, calling for Akiolu’s immediate suspension.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Ajibade stated, “This is quite unfortunate. The Ibos can vote according to what their conscience desire. Is this a threat or blackmail? Coming from an Oba of his caliber? Money has destroyed his personality and as the saying goes, ‘He who the Gods want to destroy, they first make mad’.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We voted out impunity. Is this what we should be expecting, a power drunk Oba? What role is he playing? Trying to burn down Lagos and get the Yorubas in the East killed? He needs to be suspended immediately.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“I am a Yoruba and I completely dissociate myself from this mad rant. If Ambode wants the Ibos vote, he should canvass for it.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Omolaja Nofiu, who identified himself as a Yoruba man, condemned the monarch’s style of “forcing people against their consciences, legal rights and freedom.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He described such style as Satanic.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He added, “It is time that individuals must take a stand to allow light to triumph over darkness, truth over continuous lies, genuine democracy over illegal and ungodly domination and god-fatherism in Lagos and by extension, Nigeria.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Nobody has the legal right to determine the destiny of people by coercing them to vote against their consciences. It is illegal, evil and Satanic. Eating at least one to two servings a week of fish, particularly fish that’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids, appears to reduce the risk of heart disease, particularly sudden cardiac death.</p><br /><p><strong>Does it matter what kind of fish you eat?</strong> </p><br /><p>Fatty fish, such as salmon, lake trout, herring, sardines and tuna, contain the most omega-3 fatty acids and therefore the most benefit, but many types of seafood contain small amounts of omega-3 fatty acids.</p><br /><p><strong>Are there any kinds of fish you should avoid?</strong> </p><br /><p>Some fish, such as tilapia and catfish, don’t appear to be as heart healthy because they contain higher levels of unhealthy fatty acids. Keep in mind that any fish can be unhealthy depending on how it’s prepared. For example, broiling or baking fish is a healthier option than is deep-frying.<br/><br />Some researchers are concerned about eating fish produced on farms as opposed to wild-caught fish. Researchers think antibiotics, pesticides and other chemicals used in raising farmed fish may cause harmful effects to people who eat the fish.</p><br /><p><strong>How much fish should you eat?</strong> </p><br /><p>For adults, at least two servings of omega-3-rich fish a week are recommended. A serving size is 3.5 ounces (99 grams), or about the size of a deck of cards. Women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant and young children should limit the amount of fish they eat because they’re most susceptible to the potential effects of toxins in fish.</p><br /></div><br /></div>

Evaristus Bassey, on Monday in Abuja said Akiolu was “missing the point that Nigeria is a Republic and a democracy and not a monarchy.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said, “We humbly call on the Oba himself to withdraw his curse and rather appeal to the people, for indeed, such a threat may amount to playing God and God, who is a merciful father, will not allow his children to die so senselessly just because they are fulfilling the dictates of their conscience.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />According to him, the fact that APC is the government at the centre is a strong factor to employ and appeal to people to vote for its candidate “rather than invoking ancestral powers for destruction.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Bassey added, “Why is it that in Africa we usually invoke our powers for destruction and not for building-up? Why single out a particular ethnic group for this curse? We have alerted the whole world on this,” he said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Speaking on the preparedness of the party for the governorship and state assembly elections, Nwaobasi said the APC was poised to win the polls.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said, “Nobody should be given preferential treatment and we are calling on INEC not to be funny anymore. We cannot accept what happened in the National Assembly elections again; if it re-occurs we will fight it to the end.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Meanwhile, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Ebonyi State, Edward Nkwegu, had appealed to the party’s supporters not to be demoralised by the election results declared after the presidential and National Assembly elections, which gave the PDP victory in three senatorial and six House of Representatives seats in the state.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Nkwegu stated that the LP actually won the NASS elections but alleged that some compromised staff of INEC, in collusion with the PDP, announced a different result.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />In an address, entitled ‘The Imperative of Vigilance and Steadfastness’, the Ebonyi LP candidate vowed that the party would recover its stolen mandate through the due process of the law, noting that documentary evidence had already been compiled.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He challenged the security agencies, INEC officials and the citizens of the state to be vigilant in order to forestall such act in the April 11 governorship and state assembly elections, which he boasted that the LP would win once it is free and fair.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>

The Army authorities justified the arrest by claiming that they were “loitering” in an unauthorised place. They were restricted to a hotel room in Maiduguri surrounded by armed gendarmes. Our demand for the immediate release of the journalists from military custody fell on deaf ears.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“However, following the institution of a fundamental rights application at the Federal High Court at Abuja to secure the immediate release of the journalists last week the Army authorities hurriedly transferred them to the State Security Service. Yesterday, the SSS set them at liberty without any conditions. The people came early, and in many cases, waited for INEC officials that came late. The PDP got 12 million votes in that election which means that we have 12 million loyal foot soldiers and supporters in this country and that is no mean feat.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />We are a strong party, we are confident for the future, we are ready for anything and most important of all we are ready for the polls on saturday. We urge them to stand firm, to hold their heads up high and to do their very best. We urge our supporters in Rivers state, Oyo state, Imo state, Plateau state, Kaduna state and indeed in all the states where elections will take place on saturday to do the same, to take the destiny of their respective states into their hands and to vote for the PDP candidates in the various elections.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />What happened during the presidential election on March 28th was sad and unfortunate but we have accepted defeat and we wholeheartedly accept the will of the people of Nigeria. That does not however mean that we should close shop and not put up a good fight for saturdays governorship elections.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />This is the time to call on the party faithful to rise up. SOLVING THE LAGOS POWER PROBLEM AND THE VOTE FOR CONTINUITY by Moses Nasamu

The State accounts for about 65% of the nation’s industrial investments, foreign trade and commercial activities. It also accounts for about 45% of all labor emoluments paid nationwide. Lagos State as one of the rapidly growing cities in the world has a vision of becoming Africa’s model mega city and a global, financial and economic hub that is secure, productive and functional. To achieve this admirable objectives, there is need to channel investment towards solving the Lagos power problem.<br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />At the heart of this all, the Government of Lagos (LASG) will have to work with the Federal Government to develop a comprehensive national power supply strategy that meets the needs of the state. This power sector strategy will have to be driven by cutting-edge research, incorporate environmentally friendly generation, distribution and transmission, and should be governed by fair regulation.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Poor power supply and incessant outages have hindered development in Nigeria. Several issues such as poor maintenance, inadequate funding, poor electricity pricing, private monopoly, lack of energy mix, inadequate gas supply and pipeline vandalism have plagued the power sector consistently. Several scholars have even argued that the sector requires an estimated US$ 48 billion worth of investments over the next 10 years if it is to meet the current capacity demand. Nigeria also requires investments in the other fragments of the electricity supply chain especially to develop gas processing facilities, gas fields and gas pipeline networks. A substantial level of investment is also required to upgrade the existing distribution infrastructure.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Only last month, The Lagos State Governor Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) alluded that a solution to the problem of inadequate power supply could be implemented in six months if the successor companies responsible for distribution (DISCO's) were ready to yield some portion of their concessions to the state government. In recent years, the government of Lagos has also demonstrated a willingness to provide practicable solutions to the problems of power supply shortage. I recall that at the commencement of the 4th republic in 1999, under the leadership of Senator Bola Tinubu the Government of Lagos State entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Enron for the purchase of electricity in what was to become the first Independent Power Project in Nigeria. In view of the legal and regulatory regime at that time, the arrangement was for LASG to buy power from Enron and for same to be distributed by the defunct NEPA to the geographical areas specified in the PPA. In June 2001, the plant commenced feeding an aggregate capacity of 270MW into the national grid yet LASG was unable to attract maximum benefit from its investment due to a hostile regulatory regime backed by the ruling PDP.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Earlier this year, LASG in partnership with the UK Department for International Development (DFID) kicked off an ambitious solar power project set to light up 172 Public Schools and 11 Flagship Public HealthCare Centers (PHCs) across the state. This project is aimed at providing sustainable renewable energy solutions for schools and Primary HealthCare Centers as well as undeserved communities in Lagos State. Similarly, under the leadership of Gov. Babatunde Fasola, LASG has successfully through Public Private Partnerships (PPP) developed 5 IPP's and commenced distribution to government owned facilities within the state. As of today, all of these assets are under-utilized and unable to evacuate their excess power to willing buyers within the State. The LASG IPP's have been compelled by the regulators to operate within the ambit of the captive license issued them to the detriment of the state.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The emergence of Gen. Buhari and Prof. Osinbajo as President-elect and Vice President-elect respectively could well signal a new beginning as Lagos is set to experience a change in fortune and will finally be able to optimally utilize its power generating assets to catalyze rapid growth and development across the state. However, for this to happen, the good people of Lagos State will have to elect Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode the APC gubernatorial candidate as their next governor. This will mean that LASG will finally be aligned politically with the federal government and can commence a strategy formulation process that will involve structural, organizational and institutional issues concerning power supply and management, including establishing clear roles and responsibilities in the transmission and distribution functions between the Federal level and the State. The Oba thereafter called on the Igbos chiefs to show appreciation to Lagos State by supporting his candidate Mr. Ambode for continuity of excellence as they had earlier promised. He assured them of his continued support‎ and assistance where needed and the meeting ended with the traditional breaking of kolas, alligator pepper, and bitter kola and pouring of liberation on the ground.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It was within this context that that the tradition of Lagos with regard to the lagoon came up. It was said that according to tradition, whoever works against the throne and the interest and peaceful co-existence of Lagos would end up in the lagoon. Oba Akiolu stated further that the Igbo people have not betrayed the throne. Lagos has also not betrayed the Igbo people. Lagos has done so much to make the Igbos comfortable and to prosper. For this, we expect reciprocal respect and understanding.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Oba of Lagos prays that the Lagoon and the throne will continue to bless and protect all those who reside and visit Lagos.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Oba Akiolu is the father of all irrespective of tribe, religion or political persuasion. In Lagos, we have an old traditional proverb that relates to the Lagoon. The Lagoon is unique to Lagos. The proverb stresses the need for unity and understanding when you do business in an environment and in this case when you live and do business in Lagos.
