Hon Rotimi Amaechi, will on Monday, 9 March be dispatched to the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Inspector General of the Nigeria Police (IG) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), among others.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />According to Governor Amaechi, “Change, as the entire country must know by now, is the slogan of the APC – the rallying cry of a political party that wishes to bring hope of greater and better things to come for Nigeria and Nigerians. By her statement, Mrs. Jonathan was clearly calling on PDP supporters in Calabar to attack supporters and campaigners of the APC in the state.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The APCPCO likened some of Mrs. Jonathan’s inciting statements and conduct during this political campaign season, to those of Mrs Simone Gbagbo, wife of the former president of Cote D’Ivoire, Laurent Gbagbo, prior to that country’s 2010 election. The ICC indicted Mrs. Gbagbo for her part in planning to perpetrate brutal attacks – including murder, rape, and sexual violence, on her husband’s political opponents in the wake of the 2010 election.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mrs. Jonathan does not occupy any formal office in the Nigerian government, as the position of First Lady is not recognized by the Nigerian constitution. But Mrs. Gbagbo’s case shows the ICC’s awareness of how someone beyond formal governmental and military hierarchies can be identified as responsible for serious international crimes.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The APCPCO pointed out that Mrs. Jonathan’s incontrovertible hate speech not only contravenes the laws of the land, but also goes completely against the Abuja Peace Accord jointly signed by the two presidential candidates, General Muhammadu Buhari and President Goodluck Jonathan – a gesture which is aimed at forestalling violence before, during and after the 2015 elections.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“PDP supporters in the state who may not know better could easily yield themselves to the First Lady’s admonition and embark on a process of wanton stoning and other attacks against APC members,” Governor Amaechi said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The APCPCO also called on the Nigeria Police to put in place emergency measures to protect the life and property of APC members in Calabar and the entire Cross River State.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><div class='separator' style='clear: both; text-align: center;'><a href="http://ift.tt/1Hj0TIu" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://ift.tt/1Hj0TIu" width="400"/> </a> </div><br /><br/><br /><b><br/> </b> <b><br/> </b> <b>Saudi Arabia overtook India in 2014 as the world’s biggest importer of defence equipment, fuelled by tensions in the Middle East, according to a study published Sunday by respected analysts IHS Jane’s.</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Global defence trade currently stands at $64.4 billion, said the report from the London-based defence specialists.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The figure has been driven by “unparallelled demand from the emerging economies for military aircraft and an escalation of regional tensions in the Middle East and Asia Pacific,” IHS expert Ben Moores said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The report, which examines the defence market across 65 countries, found that Saudi Arabia spent more than $6.4 billion on defence kit in 2014, overtaking India on $5.57 billion.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Saudi Arabian imports increased by 54 percent over the past year and the study predicts that one out of every seven dollars spent on defence exports in 2015 will be spent by the Middle East kingdom.<br/><br /><br/><br />Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) together imported $8.6 billion of defence equipment in 2014, more than the imports of Western Europe combined.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The United States maintained its position as the top exporter, shipping $23.7 billion of equipment, ahead of Russia on $10 billion.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The biggest beneficiary of the strong Middle Eastern market remains the US, with $8.4 billion worth of Middle Eastern exports in 2014, compared to $6 billion in 2013,” said the report.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Despite Russia’s strong performance, boosted by $2.3 billion of sales to China, the study predicted tougher times ahead.<br/><br /><br/><br />“A drop-off in exports is forecast for 2015 as major programmes draw to a close, a trend that could be accelerated by sanctions,” it said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Furthermore, falls in the oil price are set to have a devastating impact on some lead Russian clients who are vulnerable to low oil prices, such as Venezuela and Iran.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />France was the third biggest exporter ($4.9 billion) followed by Britain ($4.1 billion) and Germany ($3.5 billion).<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />IHS said China had now become the third largest importer, up from fifth place earlier.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“China continues to require military aerospace assistance from Russia and its total defence procurement budget will continue to rise very quickly,” said Paul Burton, director of defence industry and budgets at IHS.<br/><br /><br/><br />The study pinpointed South Korea a potential regional leader for defence imports.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“South Korea looks set to be the rising star of the Asia Pacific defence industry,” it concluded.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>

Other aspirants included Olugbenga Adebayo who scored 8 votes, and Eyitayo Soleye who polled 1 vote.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mr. Oganla was subsequently listed by the electoral commission, INEC, to be his party’s flagbearer for the February 28 elections which was postponed to April 11.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />However, few weeks to the new date, the PDP filed a suit claiming it made typographical errors in the candidates’ list it submitted INEC. The party sought an order from the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, to replace Mr. Oganla’s name with that of one of the losers, Mr. Soleye, who is a son of a former Minister for Finance, Onaolapo Soleye.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The party’s application, with suit number FHC/L/CS/347/12, is being presided by Justice O. Abang.<br/><br /><br/><br />In the motion, the Ogun PDP sought, “An order correcting the typographical error in the names of candidate listed in the order of this honourable court made on the 15th day of December 2014 by properly stating the names of candidates for the constituencies listed below as shown hereunder and deleting the names mistakenly listed for the same constituencies in the said order to wit;…(11) Eyitayo Soleye replacing Semiu Oganla for Abeokuta North)”.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The motion on notice was filed on January 28 by R. Oluyede of D96 Landbridge Avenue, Victoria Island Annex, Lagos.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Also, an affidavit filed by Chinedu Mbata, a litigation officer, in support of the motion on notice said the Ogun PDP Secretary, Semiu Sodipo, erroneously forwarded the name of the candidate.<br/><br /><br/><br />“In the haste to send the result sheets and reports to our office in view of the urgency involved, he inadvertently sent a report of primaries for the House of Representatives, which contained an error in the name of the candidate of the party for Abeokuta North/Odeda/Obafemi-Owode constituency.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“He also made a mistake in wrongly forwarding to our office an incorrect results of primaries for Remo North and Abeokuta North State Constituencies,” the affidavit stated.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mr. Oganla, however, says the suit is a ploy to deprive him of his candidacy.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />In a petition to INEC, the candidate stated that, “Some unscrupulous elements within the party are crookedly planning to short change me by trying to substitute my name to one Eyitayo Soleye, their favourite, under the guise that my name was typographically in error forwarded to INEC.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He alleged that there was an earlier attempt to forge his signature on a withdrawal letter, to indicate he was pulling out of the race.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The candidate said he would not succumb to any plot to deprive him of his mandate.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Efforts to get the party secretary, Mr. Sodipo, and chairman, Bayo Dayo, to react to the allegations and court case were unsuccessful as both men did not pick their calls or reply text messages.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>
