Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), describing it as absolute nonsense.</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, in an interview with reporters said the report was a sign of desperation by some people with partisan interest.<br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Abati said nobody should take the report seriously because it could only have emanated from unpatriotic persons who were determined to heat up the polity for their own narrow and selfish purposes.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The presidential spokesman said contrary to the report, Jonathan remained committed to democracy and the rule of law.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He added that one of the major achievements of the present administration had been the conduct of credible elections since 2011.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />While saying that the President remained committed to the protection of the integrity of the democratic order in Nigeria, Abati added that Jonathan would never allow the gains of democracy to be reversed under his watch.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said, “That (the report) is absolute nonsense. It is nothing but a sign of desperation on the side of certain elements with partisan interest.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“President Jonathan remains fully committed to democracy and the rule of law. He is a man who believes in one man one vote; one woman, one vote; one youth, one vote and the right of every Nigerian of voting age to exercise their franchise.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“One of the major achievements of this administration had been the conduct of free, fair and credible elections at all levels since 2011 and it is a legacy of which he is proud of and he has made it clear that his ambition does not worth the blood of any Nigerian.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“It won’t happen under his watch that the gains of democracy will be reversed. He remains committed to transforming Nigeria so that democracy can be further consolidated and the rule of one man one vote will continue to be strengthened.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“He will continue to make efforts to deepen the electoral process and protect the integrity of the democratic order in Nigeria.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“I am saying categorically that the story is not true and cannot be true. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><div class='separator' style='clear: both; text-align: center;'><a href="http://ift.tt/1E6JlNl" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://ift.tt/1E6JlNl" width="400"/> </a> </div><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The All Progressives Congress has asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to join it as a defendant in a suit seeking an order barring the use of Permanent Voter Card and card readers for the conduct of the forthcoming general elections.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The suit numbered FHC/ABJ/CS/06/2015 was filed by the Society for Advancement and Protection of Public Rights.<br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The plaintiff is, by the suit, seeking to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission from using the PVC and card readers for the forthcoming polls on the grounds that they were likely to lead to the disenfranchisement of eligible voters.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It argued that since INEC had not engaged in trial application of the PVC and card readers, they could not guarantee their effectiveness.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The group therefore wants the court to, among others, direct INEC to revert to the use of Temporary Voter Cards, which had been tested during previous elections.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The plaintiff had joined only INEC and the Attorney-General of the Federation as the defendants.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />But at the hearing of the suit on Tuesday, counsel for the APC, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said the party intended to join the suit because the decision that would be eventually reached in the case would affect the chances of its candidates contesting in the general elections.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Another group, Fiscal and Civil Rights Enlightenment Foundation, represented by its lawyer, M.S. Ibrahim, also indicated to join the suit as a co-defendant during the Tuesday’s hearing.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The APC, in its affidavit filed in support of its application seeking to be joined as a co-defendant, stated that it intended to join the suit and oppose the plaintiff’s suit.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The party also said that it intended to challenge the plaintiff’s locus standi to institute the suit as it was not a registered voter.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It attached to the affidavit a copy of its proposed defence (counter-affidavit) with which it intended to oppose the plaintiff’s suit.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The affidavit dated February 9, 2015, read in part, “That the crux of the reliefs being sought by the plaintiff herein is to prevent the exclusive use of the Permanent Voter Card for the conduct of the elections.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“That the use of the Permanent Voter Card is to ensure a hitch-free and fair election and to prevent, most importantly, rigging of the election.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>

Now, the distance from Lagos to London is just over 5,000km. What the claim by the President means is that they have constructed a road from Lagos to London five times. But the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that is 404km and has not been done. So where did they see the 25,000km roads?<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“On electricity, we pay 75 per cent more than we should pay for power through self generation of electricity. Contrary to their claim, the President and the PDP can’t give electricity.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The APC governorship candidate for the state, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, however, assured residents of the state of an improved security if elected into office.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Ambode, who spoke to a mammoth crowd that included the youth, members of the Akinwunmi Ambode Kommittee of Friends, the state party Chairman, Chief Henry Ajomale, and a former member of the state House of Assembly, AbdulLateef AbdulHakeem, said he planned to install Close Circuit Television cameras on major roads to tackle criminal acts headlong in the state.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said, “Our great promise is the prosperity of Lagos and nobody will be left out. I will install CCTV cameras on all the roads in Lagos in order to reduce crime rate. Efforts will be intensified in the area of traffic management on the inner roads, while additional fleets of buses will be provided to augment the existing BRT buses.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We will create employment for our youths through tourism, entertainment and sports. Does anyone planning to conduct elections go on terminal leave? There is nothing like that.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Idowu had in an interview on a TV programme monitored in Lagos, on Tuesday, said Jega’s appointment was not guided by civil service rules and would serve until the end of his tenure on June 30.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said the postponement of the elections would make INEC better prepared for the elections scheduled for March 28 and April 11.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Idowu also denied the report that Jega had resigned his appointment due to pressure from the Presidency.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Idowu said, “No, that’s (resignation) is not true, he has not resigned. He didn’t resign. It is a mere rumour.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Similarly, the minority leader of the House of Representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, said Jega could not be asked to go on a terminal leave because he was not a civil servant.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said, “I do not consider the Chairman of INEC as a civil servant subject to civil service rules the same way I, as a member of the House of Representatives, is not a civil servant. There is a difference between a civil servant and a public servant or officer. Jega falls under the latter.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />However, it was learnt that by norm, political appointees had at several times in the past been ordered to go on terminal leave even though they were not civil servants.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The provisions of Public Service Rules 100238 states that officers are required to give three months notice of their retirement from service terminating on the effective date of their retirement. This means Jega might be forced to proceed on terminal leave before the elections.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />For instance, the tenure of Jega’s predecessor, Prof Maurice Iwu, was due to expire on June 13, 2010 but on April 28, 2010, President Goodluck Jonathan, ordered Iwu to proceed on terminal leave.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>
