<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><div class='separator' style='clear: both; text-align: center;'><a href="http://ift.tt/16fUeSa" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="273" src="http://ift.tt/16fUeSa" width="400"/> </a> </div><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Niger State Government on Tuesday declared February 5 and 6 as work-free days to enable eligible voters to collect their Permanent Voter Card ahead of the general elections.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Israel Ebije, said the holiday would give eligible voters the opportunity to collect their voter cards before the new deadline of Sunday, February 8, set by the Independent National Electoral Commission.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Ebije said the state government had resolved to ensure nobody was disenfranchised on account of failure to collect PVCs. He added that the work free days will enable people to collect their PVCs within the limited time frame.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The governor’s spokesman said the work-free days would not affect the operations of Federal Government establishments and business organisations, urging the state civil servants to use the period to mobilise people at the grass roots to collect their PVC.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The government called on those who had earlier registered, to collect their PVCs at designated collection points, adding that they should not repeat the mistakes made in previous elections, where voter cards were abandoned by registered voters.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Your PVCs are not just ordinary cards; they are a veritable tool which you would use to elect your preferred candidates in the coming elections and many more elections to come. Policies that will ensure food security, considering the fact that the fall in global oil price is seriously affecting our country’s earnings negatively,” a representative of ASSAPIN, Mrs. Mariam Buhari, said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Buhari, while speaking during a press briefing organised by Oxfam Nigeria, stated that Nigerian farmers decided to come up with a farmers’ manifesto, adding that politicians would have to endorse and pledge to commit to its dictates in order to drive the agricultural sector to amiable heights.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />She said, “There are needs in the sector that have to be addressed. Particularly, women in agriculture face a lot of challenges and that is why we are saying that any politician that doesn’t have sound policies that will ensure meaningful improvements in the sector should forget our (farmers) votes.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Speaking also at the briefing, a member of the group and Head, Madakiya Mondiccu Cooperative Society, Mrs. Monica Maigari, said it might be difficult for the government to fund its bills if it continues to relegate agriculture to the background.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />She said, “Oil prices are nose-diving and Nigeria is losing revenue as a result of this. This is the time to harness agriculture so that through the sector the government can generate revenue to run its activities. But if farmers are neglected, then it will be tough for the government to actualise this.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Programme Officer, Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, Mr. Salaudeen Hashim, said food insecurity posed a pervasive and non-violent threat to the existence of individuals, considering the fact that hunger significantly shortens life expectancy, undermines quality of life and limits participation in income generating activities.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>

This is a government that promises and fulfills its promises.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“During my inaugural speech in 2011, we made promises in that speech and we have addressed all.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We are addressing the issue of the Iron and Steel Company. We are not playing politics with it. The Attorney-General has been handling the legal issues.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We have been slowed down because of legal issues. The Attorney-General has travelled to London more than 20 times and now we have got to the end, we will move ahead.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The President asked the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Musa Sada, to address the party faithful on the current state of the firm.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Sada said having resolved the legal issues, the firm was now open for foreign investors.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He added that five foreign investors had already indicated interests in the firm.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Jonathan said if re-elected, his administration would complete all federal roads that it had started.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He described himself and Vice President Namadi Sambo as a different brand of politicians who will only promise what they can do.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It said it was necessary for the young ones to do a background check on the 14 presidential candidates with a view to knowing them well.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, said the present administration had given Nigerians total freedom.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />This, he said, could be proved by virtue of the fact that there are no politicians and journalists in prison or exile.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><div class='separator' style='clear: both; text-align: center;'> </div><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><div class='separator' style='clear: both; text-align: center;'><a href="http://ift.tt/16fUb8U" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="368" src="http://ift.tt/16fUb8U" width="640"/> </a> </div><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Uncollected Permanent Voter Cards in Cross River State is still in the region of 200,000, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Okey Ezeani, has said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />This came just as the Independent National Electoral Commission disclosed that it had started the distribution of non-sensitive materials, including ballot boxes to the 18 local government areas of the state ahead of the general elections which starts next week.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Ezeani also used the opportunity to appeal to electorate in the state to stop selling their PVCs in their own interests.<br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He spoke on Tuesday in Calabar during an interview with our correspondent.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said so far, nine local government areas have received the materials, which he mentioned as Calabar Municipality, Calabar South, Akpabuyo, Bakassi and Akamkpa, while materials for Biase, Yakurr, Abi and Obubra have also been distributed.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Ezeani said, “We have started distributing non-sensitive materials to the local government areas. As I speak, we have sent those materials to about nine local government areas. As you know, the terrain of the state is such that we need to start the distribution early to avoid lapses.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The REC said his office had received about 3,057 card readers which have been upgraded and configured to ensure that the commission does not have any reason to fail.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Speaking on the sale of voter cards, Ezeani said the act of buying and selling of PVCs was borne out of ignorance, adding that Politicians who are buying them were merely wasting their money.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“You are only disenfranchising people by buying their PVCs, because you cannot use them for anything. It is worthless and a waste of money.
