The group had donated $500,000 to the victims of explosion in the Republic of Congo.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Dangote Foundation also contributed a staggering $2million to flood victims in Pakistan and N120million to cushion the effect of famine in Niger Republic.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Two years ago, the company also made a staggering donation of N2.5billion to cushion the effect of flooding in Nigeria, making that the single highest donation by a private body in the history of Nigeria.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Dangote also donated N430million to flood victims, unemployed youths and women in Kogi State in the same year.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Three years ago, the Dangote Foundation gave out about N1 billion for the economic empowerment of women in Kano State.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Only recently the Foundation donated N540million to vulnerable women as a result of insurgency in the North-east region of Nigeria.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The group had put over N1billion into the rehabilitation of some Nigerian universities, as part of its contribution to the education sector.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Two months ago, the Dangote Foundation donated 12 trailer-load of relief items worth N40million to support the government in bringing succour to the victims of communal clash that displaced people.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The group had also donated N100million to victims of Lagos State flooding, another N100million to those in Sokoto and N60million to victims of flooding in Oyo State two years back.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The statement quoted Dangote as saying: “About this philanthropy, I think from this year, I personally want to take it very seriously. I want to be much more aggressive than what we have had in the past.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to him, “We already have a foundation which will do all these things, but I am trying to see what we can do to encourage, not only Nigerians, but other Africans.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He added: “I am not going to give all my money to charity, but I am going to try my best and give part of that money to charity. I am working hard on it,”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The statement said in Benue State alone, the group had been running an annual scholarship scheme worth N10million to indigenes of Gboko communities.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It said in the state, 15 villages were electrified at the cost of N115million, adding that 14 blocks of classrooms had been constructed for the community around the company at the cost of N84billion.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It added that 19 boreholes were constructed for the communities, and that an earth dam valued at N50million was also constructed.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said apart from the monthly payment of allowances to traditional rulers, a vigilante contract to ensure N2million regular income to the community was also instituted.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We have also donated N15million to the community’s development foundation, and we are helping through the community empowerment scheme, while our one hundred bed hospital has been approved for construction within the community,” it added.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It noted in addition to the N78million compensation paid during the takeover of the company, an additional N60million inconvenience allowance had been paid to families. His reason is because of the difficulty in getting me to agree with their demand, They are no longer calling me for ransom.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Akene noted that though the kidnappers had stopped calling him, they had instead started negotiation with his younger sister.<br/><br /><br/><br />He said the unnamed sister pleaded with hismother’s captors to collect N1m, but they refused, claiming that the amount was too minute for their fuel let alone their amount for their feeding and that of my mother.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Akene recalled that when the news of the abduction got to him, he abandoned his proposed trip to attend the World Surveyors Conference in Malaysia.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“When they demanded that I resigned from the present administration as a condition for my mother’s release, I told them that I was not a man out to sacrifice my mother for position.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“They allowed me to speak with her twice.The first time, she told me she was OK and I asked her if the kidnappers were Ijaws, she confirmed they were. On second occasion, they made my mother cry as a means to convince me of their seriousness. This year’s host, Brazil, leads the way with a 77 percent reduction in deaths among children under age 5 since 1990.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The ranking, “Child Mortality: What’s the Score?” is being released in the run-up to the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Partners Forum in Johannesburg, South Africa, on June 30 – July 1.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />At the conference, global leaders will call for accelerated action to improve the health of children, newborns and mothers everywhere.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“There are two main reasons for the reduction of child mortality in Brazil: expanding access to primary health care and Bolsa Família, the world’s largest cash transfer program,” said Paulo Vicente Bonilha de Almeida, child health coordinator with the Brazilian Ministry of Health.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The National Immunization Program increased immunization rates among Brazilian children, and the National Breastfeeding Policy more than quadrupled breastfeeding.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Since 1988, Brazil’s constitution has guaranteed its citizens universal health coverage, so that they may access life-saving health services regardless of ability to pay.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Bolsa Família provides cash transfers to poor families in exchange for ensuring that children receive vaccines and attend school. Today, for every 1,000 births in Brazil, 14 children will die before their fifth birthday – down from 62 in 1990, the report further revealed.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Unfortunately, like Nigeria, not every country is doing well as Brazil in saving children’s lives.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />A major challenge to saving children’s lives is that nearly half of all deaths in children under age five occur in the first 28 days of life.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />A prevalent myth is that to save newborns, sophisticated hospitals and intensive care units are needed.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Simple low-cost solutions could help every country dramatically reduce newborn deaths,” said Professor Zulfiqar Bhutta, co-director of the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health inCanada.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“For example, wiping the umbilical cord with a disinfectant reduces deaths by half. Chimaroke Iweha, who retired in November 2013.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Represented by Prof. Chinedu Nebo, the Minister of Power, Jonathan noted that the situation in the country would have gone worse were it not for payers.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We should continue to serve God in our nation. We need to continue to cry out (pray) to him; if we have not been doing that it will be much worse.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Even though things don’t seem to be the best, it will have been worse if we are not crying out and telling people not to do the wrong thing,’’ he said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Senate President, Sen. David Mark, who read the first lesson at the service, also called on Nigerians to be faithful and continue to pray for the nation.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“All the faiths have stake in this country. Faith can do so much for us; if we have faith and believe in God sincerely, this country will make progress.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“There is no country that can make progress if the people in that country do not have faith irrespective of religion,’’ Mark said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He urged both Christians and Muslims to live in harmony and work together for the progress and stability of the country.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Earlier, the Prelate of the church, His Eminence, Dr Samuel Uche, called on government at various levels to provide for the welfare of the citizenry.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“In any nation, there is what we called intangibles, honesty, integrity, transparency, high morality that makes a country stable; these are what the church provides.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The government provides the tangibles like the roads, water supply, energy, employment, ensure there is security and make sure that citizenry are well cared for.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“In other words, the church takes care of the soul and spirit, while the government takes care of the physical needs of the people,’’ he said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Uche urged Nigerians to do things that would sustain the unity of the nation, adding that remaining together would make the nation stronger and viable.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />In a remark, Job advised the people to shun selfishness, negative political ambition, tribalism, among other vices.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We should pray for good and love one another and things will get better on daily basis,’’ he said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />via nigerianeye</div><br /></div>
