Because they knew he had it before he came to Nigeria.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The EVD has started to take its toll on the country and the West African sub region. The toll is not only on the number of those that are ill or dead but on the economic of communities, country, region and sub-region.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Obasanjo who said he had a meeting with the Ghanaian President, Mr. John Mahama, who’s also the chairman of the Economic Community of West African Countries, some weeks ago, said they discussed how to contain the spread of the deadly virus within the sub-region.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />But he explained that while Mahama wanted the meeting of ministers of health meeting, he suggested that there was a limit the ministers could go and that a summit of the presidents in the sub-region would be better.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The former president who noted that EVD was not only a regional or sub-regional threat but a global one, called for a summit of where a national policy on the disease would be formulated.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Obasanjo also advocated the need to encourage the world pharmaceutical companies to carry on research on the virus and coming up with the needed vaccine to eliminate it.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said, “Pharmaceutical companies in the country should be encourage to carry out research on the EVD and come up with vaccines to treat the deadly disease.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Also, we have to be aggressive in taking precautionary measures. At a stage, the road had to be closed completely such that people travelling to other states from Anambra had to find alternative routes.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The funeral Mass for Dora at the Church was the first ceremony there since six years when its renovation began, with the priest in charge of the church saying that Professor Akunyili donated N40 million to ensure its completion.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />United States of America-based priest, Rev Fr. Damian Akpunonu, who delivered the homily at the church service, said though the late Dora would have served Nigeria more if she lived longer, God knew why she had to bow out at the age of 60.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said that the good thing was that Professor Akunyili lived a life worthy of emulation…, adding that because she died in the Lord, she would remain blessed.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The clergy man said: “Dora’s husband, Chike, may still not believe that his wife is no more having spent so much spiritually and materially to save her life, but the will of God must be done.<br/><br /><br/><br />“At the speed Dora was moving, many people had predicted a very bright political future for her, but men propose, but Goddisposes.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“For years, Dora’s name reverberated in Nigeria and in all the places she served her country and our prayer is that God should provide us with another Dora to comfort us. In addition to serving humanity well, she also served God well and we believe that God will reward her immensely.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />According to him, what matters in life is not how long one lived, but how well, adding that the ceremony was not necessarily to bury Professor Akunyili since Jesus Christ had conquered death, but to give testimony to the legacies she left behind. It is however, a very painful day for us because the PDP candidate and the party had completed their home work and we know the people of Osun are tired of what is happening in the state, but here we are.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“I hope the APC, which is in the habit of complaining of having security agencies in ensuring enabling environment for election and is consistent in controversy and rejecting election results, will reject this Osun state gubernatorial election result.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He however commended Independent National Electoral Commission and the security agencies for the roles they played in delivering a credible election in Osun.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Speaking on the groups canvassing for the reelection of President Jonathan in 2015, the Special Adviser said “Since assumption of office, we inherited 3,000 Goodluck Support groups, some have been existing and some are new, and we felt it is only those that are serious, and that we know each and every one of them, in faces, not only on papers, know what they can do and how we can collaborate with them.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The national coordinator of G2G and former governorship candidate of PDP in Edo state, Gen. On our arrival time by 8 a.m. yesterday (Saturday), 96.25 per cent of the polling units were opened. That is better than that of Ekiti State, which was 95.6 per cent.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Don’t forget that Osun has 30 local government areas, while Ekiti State has 20 local governments, yet we still surpassed the performance in Ekiti,“ Idowu said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said other indices showed that there were no challenges with voter accreditation and voting.<br/><br /><br/><br />“Even the announcement of the election result is another indication, which shows the functionality of our process.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“As at 7. 30 a.m. today (Sunday), the result from all the 30 local government areas were announced, while that of Ekiti was announced at about 9 a.m. the day after the election. So, from all indications, the election was a success,“ he said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Idowu said because no human endeavour was perfect, the commission would continue to fine-tune its operations to improve on the organisation of elections.<br/><br /><br/><br />“INEC is not saying that the Osun election is the highest we can attain; we are still going higher and we believe God that we will do better by 2015.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We had our deployment plan and contingency plan, but every election has its complication. What INEC normally does is to deploy based on its plan and we also had contingency plan because you cannot predict the turnout of the people.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“You will notice that immediately we observed that there were challenges in some areas, the contingency plan was deployed to make up for those places.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“That is part of our operational plan and at the end of the day I don’t think there was any place people were unable to vote due to inadequate ad-hoc staff,“ he said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Asked if Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had rejected the election result, Idowu said the commission was not aware of such development and added: “We are more concerned about the election procedures.“<br/><br /><br/><br />He commended all the stakeholders in the election, especially the members of the National Youth Service Corps, security agencies, observers and political parties.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“They have all done extremely well and we hope to build on that,“ Idowu said. Let me be realistic with you, there is a difference between propaganda and reality.</p><br /><br/><br /><p><br/><br /><br/><br />"I have been calling the governor since after our meeting but he hasn't picked the call.</p><br /><br/><br /><p><br/><br /><br/><br />"If you read all papers now, he said I will create local governments before I go; how do you reconcile these things?</p><br /><br/><br /><p><br/><br /><br/><br />"I am not a propagandist, I am a realist. The governor says he will do employment before he leaves that means you want to create problem for the incoming government.</p><br /><br/><br /><p><br/><br /><br/><br />"So I see that concession, as good as it may be, we must all be realistic about it, we must not deceive the Nigerian populace.</p><br /><br/><br /><p><br/><br /><br/><br />"Their party said we are still studying the ink used by INEC; it is the governor that conceded not our party."</p><br /><br/><br /><p><br/><br /><br/><br />Fayose recalled that in 2003, his predecessor, Mr Niyi Adebayo, also conceded defeat but went ahead to conduct a mass recruitment though he had only six months remaining in his tenure.</p><br /><br/><br /><p><br/><br /><br/><br />He said, "I respect the governor; he is our leader, up until the 15th of October, he remains our leader but I want to appeal to APC not to play propaganda with sensitive issues like this.</p><br /><br/><br /><p><br/><br /><br/><br />"If the governor says I am not going, his party too must make pronouncements otherwise I do not mind them going to court.</p><br /><br/><br /><p><br/><br /><br/><br />"The court will ask you: 'it is usually the incumbent that rigs, why would somebody who is not an incumbent now rig and defeat you in your ward'?"</p><br /><br/><br /><p><br/><br /><br/><br />He said that none of the APC Senators or House of Representative members, including former governor, Mr Segun Oni, won in their polling booths, not even former Governor Segun Oni.</p><br /><br/><br /><p><br/><br /><br/><br />Fayose, however, commended the incumbent governor for the bold step taken in conceding defeat, though it was meant to induce public sympathy.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said though he would run an inclusive government he would only work with those who were willing to work with him.</p><br /><br/><br /><p><br/><br /><br/><br />He said, "With due respect, I know APC more than you, I will not shoot myself in the leg before I start so I will rather let us leave it as it is.</p><br /><br/><br /><p><br/><br /><br/><br />"It is our government but we will make sure they have their say; minority will have their say, majority will have their way.
