We stand ready to help and as soon as our government and Nigerian government approves, we will take action”.</span> </p><br /><br/><br /><p><span>But in the meantime, US is helping Nigeria to train its military, the delegation said.</span> </p><br /><br/><br /><p><span>Jackson-Lee said, “What I want to say is that I think what it is right now is to work with the Nigerian government in training of the military. I want to emphasise again here that we have come all these miles to say that our Congress stands ready to cooperate and the government in a manner that is appropriate and with the consent of Nigerian government.</span> </p><br /><br/><br /><p><span>”And I want to emphasise the need for the Victims Relief Fund because there is so much suffering going on by the young girls and the their families that have been touched by this violence”.</span> </p><br /><br/><br /><p><span>The delegation also urged the Nigerian government to set up a National Victim Fund.</span> </p><br /><br/><br /><p><span>The fund, they argued, is necessary for the rehabilitation of all those who have suffered from attacks in the hands of insurgents.</span> </p><br /><br/><br /><p><span>According to Jackson-Lee, “collectively we bring a wide range of special knowledge to Nigeria and to focus on a very important issue. The defendant (Obasanjo) was put in his place as he failed to fly the flag of the nation successfully and lost the contest disgracefully.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Kashamu insisted that Obasanjo’s claims in his statement of defence constituted “an aggravation of the libel charge before the court.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said Obasanjo’s use of his “touted national and international acclaim to malign more productive members of the society is uncalled for and could be symptomatic of megalomania.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Meanwhile, the former President who had earlier resolved not to personally testify in the matter, had in his statement of defence, described Kashamu as a notorious debtor and a man lacking in local and international reputation.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He urged the court to dismiss the suit for being “frivolous, speculative and gold digging”, insisting that no reasonable cause of action was established against him.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Kashamu had in his suit, claimed that Obasanjo, ‘murdered’ his reputation via a letter he (Obasanjo), sent to both President Goodluck Jonathan and the immediate past National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Kashamu told the court that the defendant, maliciously and recklessly published a letter titled, “Before it is too late,” which he said contained distorted facts.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He argued that the criminal imputation made against him by Obasanjo in his letter, greatly injured his public image.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He prayed the court to award in his favour, and against the ex-President, N20 billion for the damage suffered as a result of the allegation.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The plaintiff told the court that the former president specifically referred to him in the said letter as a fugitive wanted in the United States.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>However, in his statement of defence, Obasanjo stood his ground, saying he had no reason to retract the words in the said letter as requested by Kashamu.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The statement/words are correct, true and justified”, he maintained, adding, “The plaintiff has no iota of good reputation locally and internationally.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Aside the plaintiff’s illicit drug business for which he was indicted and wanted in America, the plaintiff has penchant for taking loans from unsuspecting banks/financial institutions with intention to permanently elude/avoid repayment or liquidation of such loans.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Further to that, the plaintiff has been judicially adjudged/confirmed a debtor by a competent court of law in Cotonou, Republic of Benin. They were also said to have set several shops, houses, vehicles and motorcycles ablaze.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The scene of the latest attack (Askira/Uba) shares boundaries with Biu, Chibok, Gwoza and Hawul council areas, and is in the southern part of Borno State. It is about 190 kilometres to Maiduguri, the state capital.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Eyewitnesses recalled seeing the insurgents storm the market on motorcycles and in a Hilux Toyota vehicle at about 11am and opened fire on the traders, killing 15 instantly.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>They were also said to have carted away food items and unspecified sums of money.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It was learnt that the terrorists operated for about an hour unchallenged before they were sighted fleeing towards the dreaded Sambisa Forest.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Efforts to get the official reaction of relevant authorities in Borno were unsuccessful.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

It is an obvious fact that even many of our members have died during strike. We are expecting government to re-right some wrongs but instead of changing position of things, they are making things worse. Enough is enough. We still remember the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky case while Clinton was in office.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Exponents say that the fact that people trusted you to manage their resources does not make you a super human being.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“But the opponents said Nigeria was at the level of democratic practice where removal of immunity will lead to frivolous cases,” he stated.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mr. George was one of the few high profile political officials tried and convicted of corruption. He was jailed in 2009 for 30 months.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>In December 2013, the Supreme Court quashed all the charges against Mr. George, saying he was charged on a law that did not exist at time the said crime was committed.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Addressing journalists in Lagos, Mr. George said the immunity clause has outlived its usefulness, and that there are procedures to follow if frivolous cases are raised against a president or governor.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I support the idea that it should be expunged because it will start to assist the growth of the nation,” he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mr. George, who is a delegated at National Conference said that regionalism is no longer a viable in Nigeria.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The debate on regionalism and removal of the immunity clause has continued to generate heated arguments at the on-going National Conference.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mr. George, who is a member of the Committee on Politics and Governance at the conference, argued that states would refused to merge in the hope of regionalism.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We tried the analysis at the confab and 33 out of the 36 states representatives said no.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“If states that think they are not very viable to stay alone are so concerned about survival, then let them merge via referendum of their people.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The idea of regionalism was muted by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo to recognise minorities on both sides of the divide.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I do not see many states agreeing to be ruled again by one premier. It cannot work.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said there is a need for economic cooperation among all the federating states which, he said, would make more sense.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mr. George said Nigeria is better off with a presidential system of government, based on the principle of zoning.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said that Nigeria’s democracy would not have lasted this long if not for the zoning arrangement.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“With zoning, every region has something to go home with. If Nigeria wants to practise true federalism, the Federal Government should concern itself with the states.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Let the states decide how many councils they want but sharing will be on two levels. The councils will cease to be part of the national sharing.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We are talking about equality and fairness. If we want peace in Nigeria, let whatever comes to the pool be shared equally.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“That way people will still have a sense of fairness and belonging,” he argued.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The PDP chieftain also criticised the payment of pension to elected public officials, urging states already practising it to cancel it.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We kicked against the issue of pension, when it was started in Lagos.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“As an ex-governor, I don’t take pension from my state. No ex-governor deserves a pension after eight years in office.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“It is immoral and ungodly to reap the people off like that amid so much poverty.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Gov. Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State is a man, who respects the voice of the people by cancelling his planned pension scheme.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mr. George said that if elected, a PDP government in Lagos State would cancel pension for ex-governors.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Speaking also on the current insurgency in the country, Mr. George explained that the method of fighting terror is different because the enemy is unknown.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Yes the buck stops on the President’s table but every Nigerian must be involved and speak up against it.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“It is not a matter of going to rout the Chibok girls out. The President is also concerned because he is also a father.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The Chibok girls’ abduction is a national disaster for all Nigerians. Our sympathy should be suggestions not castigations,” Mr. George said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>On the upcoming Ekiti polls, he said that it would be a repeat of the voting pattern in the state in 2003.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Ekiti people are ready. Nobody can rig and get away with it in Ekiti State. This time, it will be one-man one-vote,” he said, charging the people not to be cowed or muscled.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I pray for peace. He has been admitted in the hospital.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“He has been visited, not only by members of the secretariat but also by some of the delegates, who belong to the community of the retired police officers.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“He is undergoing treatment and I understand that he is stable. So they simply want us to inform the house of this development. So, we are getting close to the 1.8 million that enter the job market.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Also, he said, “We also have a pool of 5.3 million unemployed graduates that have been accumulating over the years.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“So our strategy is to come up with policies that will cover the number of entrants every year before taking care of the backlog.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The minister said that President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration was doing a lot to create employment opportunities for the youth.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Through YouWin programme, we have had 3,600 winners, among whom 2,400 winners have created 27,000 jobs so far. Our target is to create a minimum of 80,000 jobs through this.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Through SURE-P, so far, we have created 120,000 jobs. His family members and those of the other victims are in anguish.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The fact about it is that such places cannot be seen by ordinary eyes and that is why we cannot fold our arms.
