You are not new, you are as old as the old members of the ruling party you met there.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The ruling PDP remains the most transparent, largest and credible political arty in the country. So, you are welcome home.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mu’azu told the defectors and others to realise that it would be wrong for them to think that they could get the party’s ticket to contest election with their connection with either the Presidency or the national leadership of the party.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Those of you who think you can get the form because of your connection with the Presidential Villa or the national leadership of the party should please forget it because the power to elect does not rest with either of these areas,” he added.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He further advised them not to be what he referred to as “Abuja politicians”, saying many politicians thought that they could be elected by staying in Abuja and making noise without being known in their constituencies.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said he wouldn’t have been governor in his state if he didn’t have the support of the people at the grassroots, and advised them not to remain aloof from the people who elected them into office.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The day of reckoning is coming when you will have to go to these same set of people that you run away from when you think you have become a big man. But she has since said she was ‘misunderstood’.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>But the opposition party in a statement issued on Thursday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said it was surprised that such an insensitive statement could be made by a woman considered to be a mother, grandmother and top official of the ruling PDP.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>APC said such issue of national concern and threat to life that is seen as a national embarrassment, shouldn’t be downplayed by a strong party member of Chikwe’s stature.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The party wonders if the statements depict the belief of the PDP over the abduction of the young schoolgirls.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It said; “It has been said that politics should not be brought into issues of national security. But how can anyone keep quiet in the face of this glaring assault on the sensitivity of a whole nation by a supposed leader of the ruling party? Who indeed is attempting to politicise a national tragedy, undoubtedly the worst in the history of our nation, if not the PDP?”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The party stressed that President Goodluck Jonathan’s failure to visit chibok to talk to the parents of the abducted students could be linked to Chikwe’s statement.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It said, “Does this explain why the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has not deemed it fit to make a national broadcast to assure a dumbstruck nation that he is indeed in charge, to give hope to the shell-shocked parents of the girls and to inspire the military, three weeks after this unprecedented national tragedy? Is this why the President and Commander-in-Chief has yet to visit Chibok?</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“If security concerns are responsible for the President’s failure to visit Chibok, how is it possible for Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno State to have visited the school, even in defiance of intelligence reports? If the military cannot make Chibok safe for its Commander-in-Chief to visit, who in that town is safe? We submit that no part of this country should be out of bounds to the President and Commander-in-Chief. Nowhere in which our military men and women are deployed should be out of bounds to our President and Commander-in-Chief”, it said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>APC went further: “A fringe group first mooted this idea of the abduction not being real and was ignored. But now that it has been raised to the level of a party’s stand, it is time for all Nigerians to speak out and condemn this absurdity. Is Chikwe saying that the military that has been working round the clock to rescue the girls is only play acting? Is she also saying that the President who called an expanded National Security Council meeting on the issue is only horsing around? Enough of this absurdity.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We urge our patriotic soldiers and indeed all concerned to ensure that these innocent girls are returned home safely to their parents. We commend all the groups that have staged public protests to force the authorities to act faster on this issue for their efforts. Who saw it happen? Who did not see it happen? google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><img alt="ayo-fayose1" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-101203" height="250" src="http://ift.tt/QrQi9q" width="350"/>A last ditch effort by former Ekiti State governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose to have his trial for fraud postponed till after the June 21 gubernatorial election in the state met a brick wall on Thursday.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Fayose, who is the standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had prayed the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti, to defer his trial so that he could focus on prosecuting his governorship ambition but the request was rejected.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He is standing trial for allegedly misappropriating state funds to the tune of N416 million during his first stint in office between 2003 and 2006 before he was impeached.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is prosecuting him said it was in his best interest to stand trial before the poll to enable Ekiti citizens make up their minds on him.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, spokesperson for the EFCC said in a statement that counsel to the former governor, Mr. Raji Ahmed (SAN) prayed the court to adjourn the matter till the first week of July to allow his client concentrate on his electoral campaign.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said: “Ahmed argued that the accused must be presumed innocent until proven guilty.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The request was, however, turned down by Justice Adamu Hobon after a strong objection by the counsel to the EFCC, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), who said an accelerated hearing of the matter would help Fayose”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The statement quoted Mr. Jacobs as saying “It would be in the interest of the accused person [to stand trial], so that his people can make up their mind about him and his name cleared before the election”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Justice Hobon, thereafter, adjourned the matter till May 6, 2014 for continuation of trial but not before the court admitted eight documents as exhibits by the prosecution.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The documents admitted were Certificate of Identification of Biological Concept Nigeria Limited; Account Statement of Biological Concept Nigeria Limited; Account Opening document of Biological Concept Limited; Account Statement of Avians Specialties Nigeria Limited and Account Opening document of Avians Specialties- all with Skye Bank Plc.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Others were Certificate of Account of People’s Democratic Party, Ekiti State at Keystone Bank, the Account Opening form of the party and Statement of Account.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Five of the documents involving Skye Bank were presented before the court by a prosecution witness, Mr. Emmanuel Olajide Alejo, who was led in evidence by Jacobs.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The EFCC counsel urged the court to admit the documents as exhibits.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He explained that the witness could not produce the original of the documents owing to short notice.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The witness had earlier told the court that he was instructed to prepare the documents for witnessing two days before his scheduled appearance in court.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>His words: “For me to produce the original of the documents, the management of the bank will have to sit, deliberate and agree before the documents can be released and this will not meet the time the court is supposed to sit”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>However, his claim was punctured by Ahmed, who stated that his excuse was not tenable in law.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to him, even with the short notice, the management of the bank should have released the original of the documents.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>In his ruling, Justice Hobon said: “Looking through the Evidence Act 83(2), 84, 89(f) (h) all read together, no doubt, these documents passed admissibility test and such can be admitted as evidence”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He subsequently admitted the documents as exhibits N1-N5.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Three documents presented by another prosecution witness – Taiwo Sanusi – Head of Compliance, Monitoring and Reporting at Keystone Bank, was also admitted by the court as evidence.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The three documents were generated from an account of the PDP, Ekiti State.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Jacobs prayed the court to admit them as exhibits and with no objection by Ahmed, Justice Hobon admitted them as exhibits P1, P2 and P3 respectively.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It would be recalled that Fayose was re-arraigned on November 22, 2012 by the EFCC on a 27-count amended charge bordering on misappropriation of state funds to the tune of N416million.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

He said the agreement would be tabled before the delegates on Monday for adoption.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Delegates disrupted proceedings on March 24 and 25 when they failed to reach a consensus on whether to adopt a two-third majority or three-quarter majority on any issue.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Some delegates, largely northern delegates, pushed for three-quarter saying it was more representative of the majority; while others, largely southern delegates pushed for two thirds arguing that this was the obtainable trend in most parts of the world.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Order VI Rule 3 of the procedure rule of the conference provides that any decision in the conference shall be decided by at least a three-quarter majority.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It reads: “any questions proposed for decision in the conference shall be determined by consensus and when this is not achievable, it should be determined by a three-quarter majority of the delegates present and voting.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>In a bid to resolve the stalemate, the delegates on March 25 mandated the Chairman, Idris Kutigi, to convene a meeting of some selected delegates from the six geopolitical zones to look into the issue.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>On resumption of plenary on March 26, the leadership announced that the 50-member group had been selected to resolve the three-quarter and two-third dichotomy.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Immediately after the first debate on March 26, plenary was adjourned to reconvene in the afternoon to enable the 50 selected delegates have a close-door meeting with the principal officers.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The disagreement will not affect resumption of plenary on Monday because it has been resolved”, Mr. James thinks.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The 50-man consensus group met with the principal officers on Wednesday and Thursday and a consensus has been reached”, he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Yet he is quick to add that the resolution is still a proposal which the delegates can refuse.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“It is still a proposal. The chairman said the new state should be created from the present Plateau and Bauchi States, adding that they meet the requirement as stipulated in the Nigerian constitution.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The movement met the requirements of Section 8(1)(a) and (b) of the 1999 Constitution and thus called on the Committee for the Review of the 1999 Constitution to do its part of the job”, he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mr. Rowland showered accolades on the Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution for revisiting the “issues agitating for states creation, but is willing to relax the cumbersomeness of the near-impossible process by amending Section 8(1) (a) and (b) of the 1999 Constitution”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The section reads: “An act of the National Assembly for the purpose of creating a new state shall only be passed if a request supported by at least ⅔ majority of members representing the area demanding the creation of a new state in each of the following namely the Senate, and the House of Representatives, House of Assembly in respect of the area, and the Local Government Council in respect of the area, is received by the National Assembly”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mr. Rowland suggested that the next population census should also ascertain the actual population of Muslims and Christians in Nigeria.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The next (2016) national population census form must have information on religious inclination to determine which religion is really in the majority in Nigeria”, said Mr. Rowland.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Indigenes of Southern Plateau State have alleged marginalization by other parts of the state.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The association also decried the tight grip on power by the older generation, who they alleged stay at the helm of affairs for an inordinate period thereby sidelining the youth from the administration of the state.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The group asked the “National Assembly and the National Conference to provide in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria a proviso that no one more than 55 years should contest for the governorship of a state and no one above 60 years should vie for the position of the President, to enable Nigerian youths have a taste of leadership”.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

<script type="text/javascript"> <script size='468x60' src='http://srvpub.com/adServe/banners?tid=22528_31474_5' type='text/javascript'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google_ad_client = "ca-pub-6630608044863529"; google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><a href="http://ift.tt/LkEFyn" rel="attachment wp-att-171904"><img alt="Inec" class="alignright size-full wp-image-171904" height="261" src="http://ift.tt/1f8rFpB" width="216"/> </a> </p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday in Abuja released the timetable for the Osun governorship election billed for Aug. 9, 2014.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>In a statement released by Mrs Augusta Ogakwu, INEC’s Secretary, the commission said the notice of election would come up on April 1.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It said campaign by political parties would also commence on May 11.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The collection of forms by political parties for the election and the conduct of primaries, including resolution of disputes which can arise from the primaries, will be on May 19 and June 2 respectively,’’ the statement said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The commission also fixed the last day for the submission of Forms CF001 and CF002 for June 19 and the publication of Personal Particulars of Candidates for June 16.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The statement also indicated that INEC has also fixed the last date for withdrawal by candidates and replacement of withdrawn candidates by political parties for June 25.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The timetable showed that submission of nomination forms by political parties and the publication of electoral register of voters for the election would be on May 1 and May 8 respectively.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It said the publication of notice of poll and submission of names of party agents to Electoral Officers of Local Government Councils would come up on July 23 and July 24 respectively.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The timetable has Aug. 7 as the last day of campaign by political parties. Third term is not acceptable to any part of Nigeria and the time limit stipulated must be respected by all Nigerians.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I am sure Nigerians will kick against a third term whether by Jonathan or by any other person in this country.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Mr. President would have completed his eight years in office by 2015. He served as Vice President for two years, Acting President for two years and is doing another four years, which will terminate in 2015.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“But those advising the President are pretending that his tenure started in 2011. I saw them on television the other day trying to argue in that direction, but they can never be correct.
