But he stated emphatically that he never gave him the gun to rob with, but to protect him.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Ajewole escorts me with gun<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />According to him, “I have never participated in any robbery operation in my entire life. Ajewole is my political thug. He escorts me with the gun. All of us as chieftains were given slots in the state and as chieftains, we were supposed to work for the state government during the 2014 governorship elections.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Every political party including ours, the APC, has factions. That was why I gave him the gun so that he could always protect me wherever I went. I also told him to be with me particularly as the Ekiti election approached.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“But before the elections, the Police stormed my house and arrested me. I found the gun on the ground during the 2007 elections violence in the state and had kept it for use. I am not an armed robber. I only gave Ajewole the gun to use for my protection. I cannot tell you more than that.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Briefing newsmen on the development, the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, explained that the arrest was made following a petition by one of the victims that his two vehicles and other valuables were stolen at gunpoint in his Ile‑Ife home on June 27, 2013.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said: “The matter was transferred to Federal SARS, where a team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, swung into action.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“After months of sustained investigation, detectives traced the stolen GSM handset to one Jacob who opened up that it was sold to him by Omoniyi Ajewole who claims to be a political thug. When Ajewole was picked up, everything that was stolen from the house in Ile‑Ife was traced to him.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“During interrogation, he confessed that the gun was given to him by a councillor. Investigation reveals that Ajewole is deeply involved in the whole process. He is not just a political thug as he claims, he is actually a member of the armed robbery gang.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“This systematic investigation led to the arrest of six suspects who have been clearly linked with not just the initial robbery incident that was reported but to series of other armed robbery incidents that have taken place in various parts of the country.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Apart from the six robbery suspects, two receivers of some of the stolen vehicles were also arrested.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Of these 17 recovered cars, 12 of them are Toyota products. That again explains why we will continue to advise Nigerians, particularly those who use Toyota products, to know that they must go the extra mile of safe guarding them.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><i><br/> </i> <i><br/> </i> <i>I am not a robber, but political thug — Suspect</i><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Ajewole, 28, told journalists: “I am not a robber. I am a political thug, I work for APC. Honourable Itunu employed me last year and gave me a gun. He pays me N50,000 every month and also assists me financially in other areas.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“What I do is to guard him whenever there was any meeting between him and members of other parties and during campaigns. But I have never used the gun to rob.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“I only gave it as barter to a friend whom I collected some things from. I did not know he used it to rob. This action is designed to actually halt further acquisition of firearms, by both the politicians and the citizens.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We are also increasing surveillance on our borders. The Marine Police and Border Patrol Units have been repositioned to man our entry and exit points.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />On the case of the Ejigbo torture, Mba added that the police had not charged the suspects with murder, as widely expected because the police had yet to find evidence for such.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“On the Ejigbo issue, the Federal SARS have made a lot of progress. Ten suspects have been charged to the Lagos State Magistrate’s Court, Igbosere. The case file was also forwarded to the Lagos State Department of Public Prosecutions. The police have not charged them with murder because our detailed investigations even took us to Benin Republic where we interacted with Juliana’s relatives and the traditional ruler over there.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Both said that Juliana is still alive. Other categories include: pioneers, artists, leaders and icons.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The beauty of the list is the fact that it stuck by its theme; ‘the most influential people’, which means it doesn’t matter what they do, but the influence they wield.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>A well deserved recognition for Nigerian billionaire, Aliko Dangote, who was tagged in the magazine as ‘Africa’s richest man who does good in addition to doing well’.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Who better to write a tribute for Dangote than founder of Microsoft who has now thrown himself fully into philanthropy, Bill Gates.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Here’s what Gate wrote about Dangote:</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“A year ago, I gave a speech in London about the fight to eradicate polio. It included a section on Nigeria, one of just three countries where the virus still circulates. The organizers told me Aliko Dangote had been invited. I thought, I’d like to see him, but he’d end polio faster by staying in Nigeria and doing the work he does every day. Fortunately, Aliko thought the same thing. Tagged as the guardian of Nigeria’s public funds, Iweala saw Nigeria become the largest economy in Africa following years of hardwork as Nigeria’s Finance minister.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to Bono, who first met economist Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala when she was campaigning for Nigerian debt relief; “We’d been fighting our way through capitals around the world trying to get Cold War–era debts canceled for the poorest, most heavily indebted countries. During her first term as Finance Minister of Nigeria, Ngozi arrived at her desk to find a weighty $30 billion owed.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“With oil prices on the rise, she stopped having to plead with her creditors and bought a massive chunk of her own debt so she could cancel it herself. As if to make a point. She became a legend in that moment.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Humor and joy spill out of her, which can belie the fact that she’s got one of the toughest jobs on the planet — how to ensure that the tens of billions of dollars earned each year in oil receipts go into productive usage, like agriculture, infrastructure, health and education. How can he say he voted for me?”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He asked Kwankwaso to explain the whereabouts of over N250 billion disbursed to local government councils between 2011 and now, stressing that this, perhaps, explained the absence of development at the 44 local government areas of Kano State.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Some of you would be asking questions why the President did not wear PDP dress in the rally; I decided to appear this way because there is somebody here in Kano that said anybody that wears hat is a devil and I would explain in detail the federal government projects here in Kano. There are 138 airplanes in Nigeria at the moment.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Bombardier is currently leading the market in Nigeria and Africa. Twelve new ones should be delivered this year.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />According to him, the 12 new business aircraft to be delivered to Nigeria this year will be supplied by Bombardier and other private jet manufacturers, which he did not mention.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He also did not give the organisations and people who had ordered for the private jets in the country.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Other private jet manufacturers with significant market share in Nigeria are Embraer, Hawker Beechcraft, Gulfstream and Cessna Citation.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The state-of-the-art private jets being flown by business moguls, pastors, politicians and public office holders in the country are made by one of these manufacturers.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mattar said medium-size and large-size private jets were currently more in demand in Nigeria because their owners were flying them to longer distances in Africa, Europe and other continents for business engagements.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />As a result, he said the demand for small-size private jets were relatively low.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Most medium-size and large-size private jets currently go for between $30m and $65m.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Taking an average price of $40m per aircraft, the 12 new private jets slated for delivery in Nigeria this year are expected to cost about $480m (N76.8bn).<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Also, the 70 new private jets projected for delivery in the country over the next five years are estimated to be about $2.8bn (N448bn).<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Bombardier senior official also said he expected the 138 private jets currently in the country to double to 276 in the next 10 years because of the manner the business aircraft market was growing in Nigeria.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mattar said, “The business aviation market in Nigeria is booming. It is actually its time. I will expect that it will double in size in the next 10 years. People are flying outside Nigeria now; people are flying within Africa because of their business expansion; people are flying to Europe because of their business expansion and the financials that they require.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Nigeria as a country has actually changed; we have more laws and regulations. Infrastructure is changing, which is adapting to the new expansion. Because of this, you will see more private jets actually flying in Nigeria.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Aviation experts and analysts have said that Nigeria is the fastest growing aviation market in the world after China.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />According to them, the global financial meltdown has made the private jet market to slow down in Europe and the United States, and private jet manufacturers are now turning to the Middle East, China and Africa for survival.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />In the last two years, private jet manufacturers from the US, Europe and other parts have held several exhibitions in Nigeria and other parts of Africa in their bid to outdo one another.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />A London-based aviation expert and Chief Executive Officer, African Aviation, Mr. Nick Fadugba, said lack of effective air link within Africa had created a major opportunity for the growth of the business aviation market on the continent.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said most times, people travelled to Europe first on commercial airlines before they could connect some cities in Africa.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />But the Bombardier official said Nigeria and other African governments needed to improve on existing aviation infrastructure to ensure more growth for the business aviation or the private jet sector within the continent.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Mattar said, “I am very optimistic about the business aviation market in Africa. People are now taking it seriously. They are looking at investing in fixed-base operations. They are looking at smaller airports to develop within and outside Africa.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“But it takes time. Infrastructure is needed. It is that serious in Africa, which is good for the business aircraft because people need to fly. Imagine I want to fly from Lagos to Namibia; it takes me two days to get there on commercial airlines. I will have to go to South Africa first before going to Namibia, or I have to go to Europe first. A lot of economic activities took place here. And presently, the Federal Government makes billions of naira, if not trillions of naira, in terms of revenue from here. What kind of manager makes such huge amount of money and puts nothing back there?<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“If this is the goose that lays the golden egg, then it should not be denied of funds.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The governor said at a point, the Federal Government sent its representatives to Lagos to sanitise the Apapa area when it discovered, his administration had taken steps to rid the area of gridlock and filth, but after he held a meeting with them, “that was the last time we saw the FG’s representatives.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The governor commended the management of BusinessDay for its professionalism and vote of confidence in his administration, adding that the achievement the newspaper had recorded showed that it could hold its own in the comity of other private sector players.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Publisher/Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Frank Aigbogun, said the company had recorded phenomenal growth, having moved from a rented building to its own head office.
