<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><img alt="Chidi-Llyod1" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-113289" height="250" src="http://ift.tt/1gunzKO" width="412"/>Mr. Chidi Lloyd, Majority Leader of the Rivers House of Assembly, was on Thursday discharged and acquitted by a High Court in Port Harcourt over a charge of attempted murder.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Justice Ledan Nyordee, who delivered the judgment, said there was nothing the court could do in the matter as the police was not willing to prosecute the case.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Lloyd was arrested and charged with attempted murder of Mr. Michael Chinda, (PDP- Obio/Akpor 11) in the state legislature.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Lloyd was alleged to have hit Chinda on the head with a mace during a fight between the supporters of Governor Chibuike Ameachi and anti-Amaechi legislators in July 2013.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>NAN also recalls that the state legislative complex was closed down after the free-for-all.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice had written the court to inform it that the police did not send the case file to his office.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Justice Nyordee said the court was handicapped in the matter as the police was not willing to prosecute the case and cited the relevant section of the constitution to support the court’s decision.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>NAN further recalls that the matter had suffered several adjournments due to the police “inability” to make the case file available to the attorney-general.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mr Beluolisa Nwaofor, counsel to the accused person, told reporters that “my client is free as far as this matter is concerned.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“You will recall that the attorney-general and commissioner for justice had written the court to inform it that the police did not send the case file to his office”, Nwaofor said.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><img alt="Abba-Moro" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-186643" height="480" src="http://ift.tt/OEsaik" width="640"/>In an unprecedented move, the like of which has never been witnessed before in recent memory, the family of the embattled Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro, have tendered apology to Nigerians over the recent death of 19 applicants during the stampede which ensued at the botched recruitment exercise conducted of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).</p><br /><br/><br /><p>They however affirmed that if the consultancy firm – Drexel Nigeria Ltd., had done a good job, the unfortunate incident would have been averted.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>A statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the Spokesperson of the family and Nephew to the Minister, Mr. Major Agbo urged Nigerians to “exercise patience to enable the investigation panel come out with findings as to what really went wrong”, adding that the outcome would go a long way to avert future reoccurrence.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>They said, “We strongly share this moment of grief and pains with the immediate families of all those who lost their lives during the ill-fated recruitment exercise and beg Almighty God to comfort all parents, brothers, uncles and siblings of the deceased applicants while asking Him to give them eternal test in His bossom.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We know that no words, no matter how solemn, coming from the family will be enough to atone for these loss suffered by the immediate families of the deceased applicants but we will still beg for the understanding of Nigerians to enable the ministry carry out proper investigation into this tragedy and tell Nigerians what really went wrong”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Moro family stated noted that while they do not want to be in a hurry to indict the consultancy firm that handled the exercise in order not to preempt the investigative panel already in place, they will at the interim “condemn the shoddy and clumsy fashion with which the exercise was conducted”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Agbo said, “If the consultancy firm had done its job properly, it would have carried proper online screening of the applicants with the aim of pruning down the size that would be invited for the screening exercise having in mind the existing vacancies.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The Honourable Minister is a member of the family and known seriously for his respect for sanctity of lives of people and cannot in anyway, celebrate the death of any human being as being insinuated in some quarters, but will however show respect for the opinions of individuals who have painted him in different light other than what we know about him”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The family observed that the incidence, though unintentional, appears to be eroding the numerous positive achievements Moro has recorded in the ministry since his assumption of duty as minister.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said, “Once again, we plead for the understanding of all those who lost their dear ones in this incidence to show understanding as God knows better what has happened.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Our heart, as a family is with you and we strongly believe that God almighty will comfort you during this period of grief. We are with you in prayers now and always. God bless Nigeria”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to Agbo, the embattled minister has written his name in gold as one of the best local government chairmen in Benue State where he hails from and the country in general, “having served as ALGON chairman in Benue and having received numerous awards as best serving local government chairman in the federation in the past”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He added, “The Honourable Minister has over time, been known as a man of integrity, honesty, dedication to duty, thoroughness, commitment and we are still at a loss as to what probably may have gone wrong with this exercise.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“As the Head of the ministry, the task of overseeing the conduct of the exercise rested strictly with the Minister through the CG of NIS; what happened at the field did not reflect the numerous assurances received by the Honourable Minister from the consultants that all was going on smoothly”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The family expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for coming up with some form of palliatives ranging from employment opportunities for immediate family members of deceased applicants as well as automatic employment for all injured applicants across the federation “even though we are aware that such gestures cannot bring back to life, all those who died in the tragedy”.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><img alt="shipping-cargo-nigeria" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-186984" height="369" src="http://ift.tt/1g8PBLO" width="495"/>The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) on Friday said that four vessels carrying petroleum products had arrived at the ports in Lagos.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>This is contained in the NPA’s daily publication, the “Shipping Position.”</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to NAN reports NPA, the vessels will discharge their products at the Single Buoy Mooring; the Petroleum Wharf Apapa; Fishery Wharf and the New Oil Jetty.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The NPA also disclosed that it was expecting the arrival of 51 vessels from March 21 to April 15.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>A breakdown showed that 20 of the 51 vessels would sail in with containers while 17 vessels would come with food items.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It said that the food items include frozen fish, bulk salt, rice in bags, buckwheat and bulk malt.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Four vessels will come in with additional petroleum products, including aviation fuel, the NPA said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It said that the remaining 10 vessels would sail in with general cargo, including steel products.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><img alt="Suntai" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-122157" height="238" src="http://ift.tt/1eZBS5v" width="277"/>The Chief Medical Director of Taraba State Specialist Hospital, Jalingo, and personal physician to recuperating Governor Danbaba Suntai, Prof. Zakari Aliyu, is facing trial by the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council for allegedly divulging Suntai’s health status.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Aliyu had last year told a five-member ad-hoc committee set up by the Taraba State House of Assembly to ascertain the health condition of Suntai that the governor had lost some cognitive abilities due to a brain injury, which he sustained in a plane crash in October 2012.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>When he was criticized by a section of Nigerians for divulging the then ailing governor’s health status first to a media house and later to the state assembly, contrary to the ethics of his profession, the renowned professor of medicine said “I spoke with the President of NMA recently and he said I should be praised rather than be crucified”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>But when his case came up yesterday before the council’s disciplinary tribunal, Aliyu was nowhere to be found. Instead, a letter from him was received saying he had relocated to the United States.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>In the letter to the secretariat of the tribunal, Aliyu tendered his apology for not appearing, saying he was no longer resident in Nigeria.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He explained that he did not receive any of the tribunal’s summons as his address had changed, until his attention was drawn to his name in the newspaper requesting him to appear before the tribunal.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He, therefore, pleaded for time to enable him prepare adequately to attend the next sitting of the tribunal.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Speaking earlier, chairman of the tribunal, Dr Jonathan Uzoatuegwu, said the tribunal is expected to dispense justice and adjudge the ethical conduct of the medical profession.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><img alt="hospital" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-186987" height="375" src="http://ift.tt/1g8PBLA" width="500"/>Medical and Health Workers Union in Kaduna State has suspended its 21-day-old strike after an agreement with the State Government on Friday.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the meeting was brokered by the 10-man adhoc committee set up by the state House of Assembly to mediate on the matter.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The committee was headed by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Peter Adamu.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mr John Akogu, who spoke on behalf of the union directed all the striking workers to resume work immediately.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Akogu, who chairs union’s ‘Strike Force Committee’ said it agreed to suspend the strike to allow for continuous negotiation with the government.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We have reached an understanding with government hence this action is suspended”, he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He urged the workers to show more commitment to their work to justify their demand for wage increase.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>On his part, the Head of Service, Mr Akila Bungwon appreciated the union leaders for their understanding, emphasising that “in any disagreement, dialogue is the answer”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Bungwon commended the state Assembly for its intervention and appealled to the health workers to be diligent in their duties.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He pledged that the state government would do everything within its powers to enhance access to medical services to the citizenry.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>NAN recalls that the health workers had been on strike since March 1, seeking for 30 per cent increment in their salaries, a situation which led to the closure of all public hospitals in the state.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><img alt="fallen-mast" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-186986" height="330" src="http://ift.tt/1eZBRP9" width="620"/>A telecommunication mast erected in a residential area in Odukpani, near Calabar, has collapsed, killing two persons and injuring three others.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The fallen mast also destroyed several houses on its path on March 19.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Eyewitnesses told journalists on Thursday that 11-year-old Lawrencia Asuquo, and a businessman, Adindu Fynecountry, from Abia, died on the spot when struck by the falling mast.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The witnesses said the mast fell shortly after a brief stormy rain.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Secretary of Odukpani Local Government Area, Eyet Eyibio, said: “we are yet to conduct a study of the situation. We will come out with a comprehensive report on the disaster.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“But I will describe the incident as quite unfortunate.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Relevant departments of the council will do a study of the disaster in concert with other agencies of government and the mast owners and take steps to forestall further occurrence.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“We will also plan a remedial measure that will help to ameliorate the plight of the victims”, he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Owners of the mast declined to comment but top sources in the company confirmed the incident, saying they have sent emissary to the families of the victims.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>This is to ensure that they have temporary palliative while awaiting instructions from the company’s headquarters in Lagos.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>(NAN)</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><a href="http://ift.tt/1e84XyA"><img alt="fuel-scarcity" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-185487" height="225" src="http://ift.tt/1fBapqc" width="300"/> </a> </p><br /><br/><br /><p>Passengers were weekend stranded in some parts of Lagos as long queues of motorists resurfaced in filling stations in Lagos following the inability of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to ensure sustained supply of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Although the scarcity eased at the early part of last week in Lagos, it was learnt that that happened because there was supply in Lagos and Abuja, but other parts of the country were left out.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>It was learnt that contrary to the promises made by the private Oil Marketing and Trading (OM &T) companies to ship cargoes into the country last week, the marketers still depended largely on cargoes imported by the Pipelines Products and Marketing Company (PPMC), a subsidiary of the NNPC.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Executive Secretary of the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN), Mr. Thomas Olawore, had assured listeners that the major marketers would import four cargoes last week. But according to Thisday sources, apart from MT Centurion, carrying 23,000metric tonnes of PMS, translating to about 600 trucks, which were imported by NIPCO Plc, no other marketer shipped any cargo into Lagos last week.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The NNPC, through the PPMC, however brought in another vessel, MT Kariton, which finished discharging its products on Friday. With the inadequate stock of PMS in Lagos, most of the depots ration products to trucks that lift to filling stations.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The NNPC has consistently promised that there is adequate supply, but the Zonal Chairman of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) workers, Alhaji Tokunbo Korodo, whose association comprises mostly of Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD), told THISDAY that the products available were not enough to go round the country.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The Minister of Petroleum came to Lagos and told you people that they have enough fuel but I told you that they don’t have enough. The secret is that they concentrated loading to Lagos and Abuja because these two places attract more attention and sympathy. That was why queues reduced in Lagos and Abuja but other states were suffering.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“What happened was that 60 per cent of the trucks loading in Lagos were sent to Lagos and Abuja to discharge and it reduced queues in Lagos and Abuja. Ejigbo depot, for instance, is loading to only Lagos and Abuja. She later died.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Because the sister, who called police, initially told officers an intruder was to blame for the attack, authorities briefly placed three schools on lockdown.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The truth, when it emerged, was even more shocking.<br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br />The 14-year-old, authorities say, repeatedly and fatally stabbed the victim -- her half sister -- with a kitchen knife because the teen thought she was ungrateful.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />"This incident is a heartbreaking tragedy that defies understanding," said Mundelein Mayor Steve Lentz. "I am asking the Chicagoland area, please pray for us. Pray, first of all, for the family that has been devastated by this."<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />A group called "Mundelein Moms" is raising money for the girl's funeral and said it raised $6,381 in just one day. There also is an effort to have residents leave their lights on Friday night in remembrance.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Intruder in the house<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Police received a 911 call about the incident at 8:30 a.m Tuesday. The call came from the 14-year-old girl, said Mundelein Police Chief Eric Guenther.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The teen told emergency dispatchers that an intruder had barged into the home, attacked her sister and then fled, CNN affiliate WLS reported.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Schools in area were immediately placed on lockdown, Guenther said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />"The area-wide school lockdown lasted only 15 minutes," he said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />But the teen's story unraveled quickly. Under police questioning, she admitted to the attack, authorities said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Feeling unappreciated<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The teen told police she was mad that her sister didn't appreciate all she did for her, prosecutors said at the suspect's detention hearing Wednesday. WLS was at the hearing.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The teen said she cooked dinner for her younger sibling and performed other chores. She was also angry that the 11-year-old girl had recently hit her.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The night before the attack, the teen thought about it for about 10 or 15 minutes, then went downstairs and grabbed a knife, according to prosecutors.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />After the stabbing, she took a shower to wash off the blood, called police and made up the story about the intruder, prosecutors said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The 14-year-old was arrested and was charged with murder.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The case is in juvenile court and a decision could be made in the future to move the case to adult court, the Lake County State Attorney's Office said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Playing together<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Those who knew the girls said they lived at the home with their mother.
