<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><div class='separator' style='clear: both; text-align: center;'><a href="http://ift.tt/1qPeTlb" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="173" src="http://ift.tt/1qPeTlb" width="320"/> </a> </div><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Federal Government on Thursday said the recent spate of bombings being witnessed in the country would not, in any way jeopardise Nigeria’s hosting of the World Economic Forum.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />World leaders and investors are due to attend the conference scheduled to hold in Abuja between May 7 and 9 and the Federal Government intends to showcase its newly acquired status as the largest economy on the continent.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Monday’s bombing at Nyanya, a suburb in Abuja which killed over 71 people is the deadliest attack on the nation’s capital.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The incident has raised questions about the government’s ability to protect the capital from Boko Haram attacks.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />But the Supervising Minister of National Planning, Amb Bashir Yuguda, said during a chat with journalists in Abuja that already, a high powered security committee headed by the Inspector General of Police, had been constituted by the Federal Government.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The security committee, according to him, had been given a mandate to ensure that no threat to lives and property occur during the period that the event would be hosted.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Yuguda said that so far, over 1,000 delegates from various countries had registered for the conference, adding that the huge interest by delegates is a testimony on the confidence international investors have on the economy.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said, “The government is stepping up security and its doing its best in arresting this ugly trend.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“It is not good for us to assume that the issue of security is for government alone, every Nigerian has a role to play and we believe we will soon come out of this problem.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We want to assure all the delegates coming to the WEF that adequate security has been provided.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We have nine committees for the conference and security is an important committee headed by the IG and I had a meeting with him yesterday (Wednesday) and he assured that all security arrangement is in place and be promised that the security of all the delegates would be guaranteed.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The minster also added that the essence of hosting the international conference was to stimulate inclusive growth through job creation noting that with the event, more foreign direct investment would be secured for the country.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The essence of hosting the WEF is in line with the agenda of President Goodluck Jonahan and we are looking on how to create jobs and ensure inclusive growth as we grow the economy.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We are hoping that this should be the best WEF ever hosted by Africa. What happened was rather unfortunate. This is one killing too many. Our nation has experienced increased loss of lives.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“On a daily basis, we hear one ugly story or the other over the loss of lives. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br/><br /><br/><br /><div class='separator' style='clear: both; text-align: center;'><a href="http://ift.tt/1l83n5i" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="272" src="http://ift.tt/1l83n5i" width="640"/> </a> </div><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b><br/> </b> <b>Scores of relatives of the victims of the January 27, 2002 Ikeja Bomb blast in Lagos, yesterday stormed the office of the Governor Babatunde Fashola, to protest unpaid compensation to the remaining 84 victims’ families.</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />This came two years after the state government at the ten years memorial event, in Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, LCDA, gave out cheques worth N17.5 million to 70 families of victims.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The protesters who were all dressed in black attire, to express their grievances, stormed the seat of power, Alausa secretariat, and demanded payment of their compensation.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The protesters who were armed with a large banner and placards, which reads: “please save our soul, 84 victims family have been neglected, Ikeja Bomb blast; victims forgotten, the victims widows are dying, 84 victims family neglected by Lagos State and Mr. Governor, please fulfill your promise.”<br/><br /><br/><br />They lamented that 12 years after the ugly incident, issues concerning the blast, which was described as ‘Black Sunday’, was yet to be solved.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The leader of the protesters, Mr. Nurudeen Oyegbemi said “We came out because since the blast in 2002, we have been waiting for the government to pay compensation to the relatives of the victims.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />In 2012, at the ten years anniversary, the state governor paid N250, 000 to 70 of the 154 relatives. 84 people were yet to be paid.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Since then, we have visited the office of the governor and lawmakers; with the list of the 84 victims and letters to remind them of their promises. When the governor came to Ejigbo to commission the 2.1 kilometer January 27th link-bridge, he assured us that the 84 remaining victims would also be paid. Since then, we are yet to receive any letter from the Governor. Also, we have visited his office four times and we weren’t allowed to see him.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />According to him, “On June 27th, 2013, the lawmakers invited us to a meeting. After the meeting, we are yet to receive any reply from them. We don’t know what to do. This was the reason why we have come out to protest the unpaid compensation. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><div class='separator' style='clear: both; text-align: center;'><a href="http://ift.tt/1r2yZGY" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://ift.tt/1r2yZGY" width="640"/> </a> </div><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><span style='font-size: large;'><b>Some of the abducted students of Girls Government Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State yesterday narrated how they escaped from the terrorists.</b> </span><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The terrorists, numbering more than 100 stormed the school wearing army uniforms and deceived the schoolgirls into thinking they were soldiers who had come to evacuated them from an impending attack, unknown to them that they were being abducted.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The students, who had returned to sit for the on-going West African School Certificate (WASC) exams at their school despite a Borno state-wide closure of educational centres because of recent Boko Haram attacks in the state initially obeyed the armed visitors, thinking they were government troops there to protect them.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />18-year-old Godiya Isaiah, among those who managed to escape the abductors, told Reuters that “When we saw these gunmen, we thought they were soldiers, they told all of us to come and walk to the gates, and we followed their instructions.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />But when the armed men started ransacking the school stores and set fire to the building, the terrified girls being herded at gunpoint into vehicles realized they were being kidnapped.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We were crying,” Isaiah said, recounting how she later jumped from a truck and ran away to hide in the bush. Other girls were packed into a bus and some pick-ups.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Shettima said at least 14 girls had managed to escape and reach safety. Borno state education commissioner Inuwa Kubo said other girls told the same story as Isaiah.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“They went into the bus unsuspecting,” he told <i>Reuters</i>.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“They were lured into the vehicle because they were told that the school was going to be attacked,” he added. The attackers also raided nearby Chibok town, ransacking stores and offices there and killing several people, witnesses said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Military authorities announced last night that most students of the Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok have been freed in the ongoing Search & Rescue operations to free the abducted students.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />A statement issued by Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade said: “With this development, the Principal of the school has confirmed that only eight of the students were still missing. One of the terrorists who carried out the attack on the school has also been captured.”<br/><br /><br/><br />Meanwhile, 14 of the abducted school girls had earlier excaped from the terrorists den.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />This came as Governor Shettima of Borno State who briefed newsmen in Maiduguri on the students’ abduction said: “So far, 14 of the abducted female students have escaped and reunited with their families, and that government and security agencies are now having sleepless nights to ensure that the remaining ones are rescued”.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />According to the governor, of the 14, five female students escaped same day they were abducted when one of the vehicles conveying them to the camps of the terrorists broke down in the bush, while the other 10 escaped when they were asked to go and wash plates for the terrorists in a nearby stream.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Governor Shettima added: “I have already given an instruction to all the security agencies to marshall all resources to see that these innocent students are rescued. I have to thank the security agencies, the principal of the school, the District Head and the Caretaker Chairman of the affected council for their support and cooperation since the sad incident happened. On behalf of Government and the people of Borno state, we have pledged N50million to anyone who givese information that will lead to the tracking/ rescuing of these our innocent daughters.
