<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><div class='separator' style='clear: both; text-align: center;'><a href="http://ift.tt/1uECB5w" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="340" src="http://ift.tt/1uECB5w" width="640"/> </a> </div><br /><br/><br /><b><br/> </b> <b>The United States Government is financing a new 24-hour satellite television channel in northern Nigeria as part of its widening campaign against Boko Haram,the New York Times has reported.</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The channel, which will be named Arewa24 when it starts broadcasting, will aim at countering the extremist influence and message of Boko Haram.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The violent sect has killed more than 12,000 people in five years, President Goodluck Jonathan said in May.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Boko Haram only drew a huge international attention after it abducted more than 200 schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The U.S, as well as France, Britain, Israel, is already helping with the search for the girls kidnapped April 14.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The U.S. has also designated Boko Haram a terrorist organization, and has placed a $7 million bounty on Abubakar Shekau, the group’s leader.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The New York Times said the television project is financed by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Counterterrorism, and it is expected to cost about $6 million (N960 million).<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The paper said the project started in 2013 and is run by Equal Access International, a San Francisco-based government contractor that has managed similar media programs sponsored by the State Department in Yemen and Pakistan.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Work on the project is nearing completion, but broadcasts have not yet begun, the report said, quoting U.S. officials informed about the plan.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The officials said the Nigerian Government is aware of the programme, which seeks to encourage youth participation in politics, in addition to countering Islamist extremism.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The sources added that the Nigerian Government did not plan to hide the American support for the TV channel when it eventually comes on stream.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />But they said the U.S. was not planning to hype its participation in the project.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />When functional, the channel will provide original content, including comedies and children’s programs that will be created,developed and produced by Nigerians. Had he allowed himself to be guided by facts rather than fiction, he would have realized that Plateau state, which has witnessed perhaps the highest quantum of killing of innocent people in any single state in recent times, is not an APC state, neither is Benue, Kaduna, Akwa Ibom or Enugu, where separatists recently attempted to forcefully take over a radio station.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”Talking of Akwa Ibom, President Jonathan has either forgotten the content of his government’s White Paper on the ”Report of the Federal a Government Investigation Panel on the 2011 Election Violence and Disturbances”, which fingered the PDP-controlled state as the source of the sophisticated weapons used in the unrest, or he decided to deliberately distort the facts just to smear the opposition,” APC said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Quoting from the White Paper, the party said: ”The panel also observed that some memoranda received from Akwa Ibom State alleged that there is a large scale arms running going on in the State….The panel recommends that Government should conduct an in-depth investigation into the allegations of large scale arms running in Akwa Ibom State to stem the tide of illegal arms flow into the country and ensure proper monitoring and licensing of local manufacturers of firearms and dealers.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />It urged President Jonathan to stop embarrassing himself and the nation by making indiscreet comments that do not accentuate his position as the leader of Africa’s most populous nation<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”Can anyone imagine US President Barack Obama publicly blaming governors elected under the aegis of the Republican Party for cases of deadly shooting in schools in his country? Can anyone imagine the US President giving a partisan coloration to the 1993 raid on the religious sect Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas, for violating federal law?<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”President Jonathan must always resist the temptation to act in an unpresidential manner, to say things that will embarrass his nation and her people, to act more like a party chairman than a President, to make comments that can easily be debunked and to say things that divide his people along religious and ethnic lines.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”The truth is that President Jonathan, as the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, controls the nation’s entire security apparatus.<br/><br /><br/><br />Therefore, he bears the ultimate responsibility for the security of all Nigerians, whether they are members of the APC, PDP, Labour Party or any party whatsoever. Insecurity in Adamawa, Borno, Benue, Plateau or Enugu state is a failure of the President, not that of the Governors of those states,” APC said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The party said the reason the Boko Haram insurgency has festered is that President Jonathan, instead of showing leadership in tackling it, has engaged in finger pointing and the apportioning of blame.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”Mr. President, we have said this before and we will repeat it: The buck stops at your desk. The doctors were said to have claimed she did not have cancer after her Nigerian doctor’s diagnosis to the effect she had the sickness.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />News of her death was officially announced by a former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, on the Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS. Obi said Akunyili died after a protracted battle with cancer.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Obi, in the statement, said: “On behalf of the Akunyili family, I wish to officially confirm the death of Prof. (Mrs.) Dora Nkem Akunyili, OFR, in a Specialist Cancer Hospital in India today at 10 am, Nigerian time, after a two-year battle with cancer. In spite her illness, Prof. Akunyili was unwavering in her belief in a better Nigeria. That was why she defied her condition and was part of Anambra State Handover Committee and the National Conference.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The statement continued: “The last time I visited her in India, even when she needed all the prayers herself, she was full of concern for the abducted Chibok girls, security and other challenges facing the country and told me that she remained prayerful for the release of those girls and for God to help President Goodluck Jonathan to overcome all the challenges facing the nation.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“She therefore urged all Nigerians to remain prayerful and committed to building a better society for our children. We all prayed together and I promised to be visiting her every month. “We thank all those who remain fervent in prayers for her recovery and urge them to remain prayerful for the peaceful repose of her soul.”<br/><br /><br/><br />Concern about Akunyili, who had been on admission in hospital for an undisclosed ailment, had made the rounds in recent times.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />For several weeks, rumours of her battle with ovarian cancer dominated the social media. Although family sources debunked the stories, the rumours got stronger.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Her public appearance at the National Conference heightened anxiety about her well-being as she looked frail and a shadow of her old self.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Findings showed that the former Minister’s ill health first came to the fore a couple of years ago while on a trip abroad. A medical check up showed she had cancer.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>Misdiagnosis</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The Cable, an online medium quoting a family source, yesterday, blamed misdiagnosis for Akunyili’s death.<br/><br /><br/><br />According to the source, when in 1998, the former Minister was the Zonal Secretary (South-east) of the Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund, Nigerian doctors gave her what many of her family members considered to be a health scare. They said she had a growth and needed surgery.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The source narrated: “Akunyili, then 44, decided to travel to the United States, first to get a second opinion and then undergo the prescribed surgery. The bill for the medical trip was $17,000, including $12,000 for the surgery. During pre-surgery check-up in the US, the doctors told her the Nigerian doctors had made a wrong diagnosis and that she did not need any surgery.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“It was said to be a minor issue that medication would solve. She thanked the doctors and, to their surprise, said she was going to return the money meant for the surgery to PTF. That was strange. Nigerian government officials had devised a way of making sure such monies were not returned to the treasury.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“The hospital informed the PTF, under the leadership of Major Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, about one honest Nigerian they had found. Buhari, himself a straightforward person, was very impressed. He wrote a letter to Akunyili commending her honesty. NAFDAC Then came 2001. President Olusegun Obasanjo wanted to appoint a director-general for the National Agency for Drug and Food Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and asked for the recommendation of an honest Nigerian pharmacist. Akunyili’s name promptly came up.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Someone who had heard about her PTF record recommended her. There was a little problem, a Nigerian problem. Objections were raised that the minister of health, Prof. ABC Nwosu, was an Igbo from Anambra State and NAFDAC, being a powerful agency under the ministry, should not be headed by another Igbo from Anambra. It was also argued that the market for fake and substandard products were controlled by the Igbo, with Onitsha – also in Anambra State – a major centre for the illicit business. She was going to protect “her people”, the antagonists said.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Obasanjo, stubborn to the cause, ignored the observations and appointed her. She went on to do a credible job and ended up as one of the most outstanding public officers in Nigeria’s history, celebrated locally and globally. She had lost a sister to fake drugs, and that was perhaps the impetus she needed to go on the offensive. Misdiagnosis Meanwhile, Akunyili always went abroad for check-ups and she was always given an all-clear. She continued to look robust and energetic, and took up another government job as minister of information and communications.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“But on July 13, 2013, something strange happened to her. She was preparing to travel to the United States to receive an award. The following day was her birthday. Her 59th, precisely. Then she fell ill. She was physically weak and having pains. She decided to go ahead with her trip and attend to her health in the United States. It was while she was there that new checks were carried out.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Alas, she had cancer. The original diagnosis in 1998 was right. But the diagnosis at the point of surgery was wrong. She became seriously ill and there were fears she could lose her life. She was in the hospital for months and only returned to Nigeria this year when the doctors said she was improving. Her last public appearance was at the National Conference in Abuja, where she was a delegate. Pictures of a frail-looking Akumyili soon went viral on the internet”.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />In a tribute, the Chief Medical Director, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Professor Akin Osibogun, described the news as shocking.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“It is indeed sad. I am just hearing the news from you now. Professor Dora Akunyili was a personal friend apart from working together during her days at NAFDAC.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The National President, Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria, Pharm Femi Adebayo, stated: “My eyes were filled with tears when I heard about the death of a faithful and brave Nigerian,<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Pharmacist par excellence. Dora rode where men trembled, especially her fight against fake counterfeit and adulterated drugs”.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>‘Adorable Dora’ (1954 – 2014)</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Prof. Dora Akunyili, a recipient of the Order of the Federal Republic, OFR, resigned her appointment as Minister of Information on December 16, 2010, after two years of service to pursue her political ambition of representing Anambra Central in the National Assembly as a senator.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Fondly known as “Adorable Dora”, the internationally renowned pharmacist, pharmacologist, erudite scholar, administrator, and visionary leader, would, perhaps, be best remembered as the no-nonsense<br/><br /><br/><br />Director General of the National Agency for Foods, Drugs and Administration and Control, NAFDAC.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Born in Makurdi, Benue State, on July 14, 1954, the deceased hailed from Nanka, Anambra State. The deceased always had a knack to be marked for distinction.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />A post-doctorate Fellow of University of London and a Fellow of the West African Post Graduate College of Pharmacists, it was NAFDAC, Director General that Akunyili proved her mettle as a leader and visionary.<br/><br /><br/><br />She took on the hydra-headed problem of fake, spurious, unwholesome and substandard drugs, turning fortunes around for the nation’s lopsided drug distribution system and quickly gaining international recognition as a true advocate for public health and human rights protection.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />A multiple award- winner for her work in pharmacology, public health and human rights, Akunyili was an embodiment of excellence academically – passing the First School Leaving Certificate Examination with distinction at St. Patrick’s Primary School, Isuofia, Anambra State, in 1966.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />To prove her prowess, she went on to emerge with Grade I Distinction in the West African School Certificate Examination of 1973 from Queen of the Rosary Secondary School, Nsukka.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />This superlative performance earned her the Eastern Nigerian Government Post-Primary Scholarship and the Federal Government of Nigeria Undergraduate Scholarship. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><div class='separator' style='clear: both; text-align: center;'><a href="http://ift.tt/1k8LSyT" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="203" src="http://ift.tt/1k8LSyT" width="400"/> </a> </div><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as an orchestrated distraction and a mindless public relations gimmick the ongoing hullabaloo about the rebasing of Nigeria’s GDP which the masterminds said has seen the country emerge as the largest economy in Africa.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><a id="more" name="more"> </a><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />In a statement, Thursday, by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said coming after the damning World Bank report which declared Nigeria as one of the countries harbouring the largest population of poor people in the world, there is no doubt that the rebasing noise is the government’s response to the classification<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”However, the federal government has only succeeded in opening itself to ridicule. This is because if ever there was a clear play at oxymoron, this is it: The largest economy with the largest population of the poor, the largest economy with the largest population of unemployed, the largest economy with the largest population of citizens living in darkness, and the largest economy with the worst infrastructure.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”Simply put, there is too much poverty in the midst of plenty, and the so-called economic growth which the FG has been trumpeting with its dubious statistics is not a result of any deliberate government policies. Policies of government are expected to result in reduction in unemployment, increase in capacity utilization by manufacturers, increased access to basic needs of life (food, water, electricity, health care, education, healthy environment, etc), increase in transparency and accountability, etc. On the contrary, the country continues to slip down the ladder on all of these fronts,” it said.<br/><br /><br/><br />APC said the federal government carried its joke too far by even giving the impression that the so-called emergence of the Nigerian economy as the largest in Africa is a function of the economic policies under President Goodluck Jonathan, rather than a rejigging of figures calibrated to fool an unsuspecting public.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The party said fortunately, no one has been fooled by the government, even though it has succeeded, at least temporarily, in diverting attention from the pervasive and worsening insecurity in the land, the hopeless power situation that has seen Nigerians publicly protesting being thrown into perpetual darkness, the ticking time bomb of rising unemployment, especially among our youth, the unprecedented massive frittering away and looting of the commonwealth and the total absence of governance.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”The reactions of the economic experts and the business community within Nigeria as well as at the World Bank level to the rebasing hubbub have taken the sail out of the government’s wind and dampened its undue ecstasy over what is nothing but window dressing.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”For example, the business community has noted that while Nigeria, with the rebased GDP, is now ranked number 26 with regard to the size of the economy in 2013, it is ranked 147 in its ease of Doing Business report of the World Bank, out of the 189 countries profiled. Even Sierra Leone and Liberia had better ranking. In the same vein, our ranking in the UNDP Human Development Index is 153, out of 210 countries. There is no better illustration of the disconnect between growth and development; between growth and quality of investment climate.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”Also, the World Bank, in a subtle but clear thumbs down, made it clear that the living standards of the citizenry and the productivity that generates those living standards are the key issues here, and that investors in London, New York, Beijing or Tokyo are not necessarily looking at the GDP statistics but how profitable their investments will be in a country.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />”Therefore, President Jonathan and his shadow-chasing economic team should therefore quit wallowing in unnecessary chest-beating over the rejigging of figures and the play on statistics and put their shoulders to the wheel to push our nation forward. If they cannot, they should get out of the way and allow those who are capable to do so.
