The country has not reported any new case of EVD.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Nigeria current EVD status as at 15 September, 2014 – 19 confirmed cases, seven dead, 12 survivors.<br/><br /><br/><br />Confirming this position weekend, the Minister of Health, Professor Onybuchi Chukwu said although there have been several rumours about suspected Ebola cases in Nigeria, all the rumoured and suspected cases have been investigated and proven negative.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />According to the Minister, at present, there is no single current case of confirmed EVD in Nigeria.<br/><br /><br/><br />Further investigations by Vanguard showed that in the last two weeks, Nigeria has not reported any new case and the total number of confirmed Ebola cases in Nigeria remains 19 – 15 in Lagos and four in Port Harcourt.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Presently, only 16 people are under surveillance in Lagos and 490 in Port Harcourt.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Chukwu also explained that the total number of death stands at seven.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Responding to the successes recorded so far, he said although there is no active Ebola case in the country, government cannot roll out the drums to celebrate.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We cannot celebrate for the simple reason that, though we know we have won the battle but not yet the war. We are happy for now. There is nobody with active Ebola virus disease in Nigeria but that is not to say we should be surprised if we had one tomorrow.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“I would not be surprised because right now we still have a number of people on surveillance. We are keeping them on surveillance because there is the possibility that any of them could develop the disease. The reason they are under surveillance is that there is a chance, no matter how slim they may develop the infection,” he added.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Ebola virus was imported into Nigeria via an infected air traveller, an American- Liberian, Patrick Sawyer who entered into Lagos on 20 July and died five days later. Sadly, a close contact of the Lagos case, an ECOWAS staff, fled Lagos, where he was under quarantine, to seek treatment in Port Harcourt.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><b>WHO expresses concern over high risk exposure in PH</b><br/><br /><br/><br /><b><br/> </b> Meanwhile, the World Health organisation, WHO, in its situation assessment expressed concern over multiple high-risk exposure opportunities, following the outbreak of EVD in Port Harcourt, adding that the outbreak has the potential to grow larger and spread faster than the one in Lagos.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />WHO disclosed that Nigerian health workers and WHO epidemiologists are monitoring more than 200 contacts. Of these, around 60 are considered to have had high-risk or very high-risk exposure.<br/><br /><br/><br />According to WHO, the highest-risk exposures occurred in family members and in health care workers and patients at the facility where the index (first) case was hospitalised. Church members who visited the index case while he was hospitalised are also considered at high risk.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“WHO, together with the Rivers State Port Health Service, has assessed public health measures at airport gates and other points of entry. Screening is under way at domestic and international airport gates. It was piloted by Captain Tunde Ojongbede, according to City Press.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Adrian Lackay, spokesperson for the SA Revenue Service (Sars), confirmed that customs officers became suspicious when the passengers’ luggage was unloaded and put through the scanners just after 7pm. The officers then investigated and found three suitcases full of cash.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The passengers apparently told officials they were acting on behalf of the Nigerian intelligence service.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />They provided documentation confirming they had come to South Africa to buy weapons. Officers found her shaking in the hallway still clutching the phone.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The woman was in hospital for two weeks but now lives in a care home as she was unable to return to her home, where she had lived since she was a child.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />In a statement to the court, her son said: “I am constantly surprised that this did not kill her.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“We are struggling to come to terms with how a young man can do such an horrific violating act to an old woman in her own home where she is meant to feel safest.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />Judge DJ Hale told Dixon: “You wanted to satisfy your sexual urges and you had not one ounce of pity for your victim.”<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />He said, “This is a particularly horrifying attack. You have blighted what remains of her life.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“Your victim was a fiercely independent woman who was living alone in the home where she had lived for most of her life, surrounded by her memories and possessions.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />“It takes a great deal of courage to live alone at that age. Even though the credibility of the election was called to question, those who were genuinely dissatisfied with the fraudulent results were advised to allow sleeping dogs to lie”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Falana said: “I have drawn the attention of the Secretary of the NBA Electoral Committee to the evidence at my disposal that the voters’ register compiled for the election contains the names of many lawyers who are not qualified to vote. For instance, some concerned members of the NBA have reliably informed me that the list of the 47 delegates representing the Abuja branch of the NBA was compiled in utter breach of the Constitution of the NBA.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I have equally confirmed that the list of co-opted members of the National Executive Committee of the NBA contains 135 names, contrary to the clear provisions of the NBA Constitution.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“In a similar situation in August 1992, I had cause to obtain a court order to stop the NBA election when I discovered that the then military junta had concluded plans to hijack the electoral process with a view to installing and imposing its stooges as leaders of the Bar.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“It is hoped that history will not be allowed to repeat itself by the NBA Electoral Committee”.</p><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

Prosecutors say he deliberately killed her after an argument.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The tweets triggered an avalanche of reactions, with some wishing the athlete well while others question his sincerity and call him a “murderer”.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The double-amputee sprinter’s second tweet was a photo collage of himself with disabled children, including a young girl with artificial legs similar to his running on a track.<br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/><br />The accompanying text reads: “You have the ability to make a difference in someones life (sic). It is obvious where the problem is emanating from. 90 percent of the fuels used in this country are distributed through this place.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I just wonder why everything is falling into pieces under this federal government. Everything about the country is falling into pieces, and Apapa has not been spared. The port cannot be managed. The fuel distribution cannot be managed without causing so much pain.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The roads have been destroyed. People are sleeping on the road because the central government cannot effectively manage the distribution of fuel.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“People are taking their bath and defecating in the open drain. All the drains have turned to refuse dumps, simply because the federal government wants to give its citizens fuel and run a port”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The governor, who only last week said for Nigerians to enjoy stable electricity, they have to vote out the Peoples Democratic Party-led federal government, noted that the practice of distributing fuel across the country has been taking place for over 50 years but it had never been this chaotic</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“This shows lack of competence on the part of the central government; and it is a shame. We can only try to manage some of the consequencex of this mismanagement”, he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Fashola again opined that the long-term solution to the problem was a change in government.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“As long as we continue with this government – because things are not getting better – things are not getting better, but worse. Last year, it was better than this. I do not know what it will be like next year.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Residents must know that this is not a Lagos State problem but the federal government’s. The responsibility for distribution and maintenance of the roads used for the distribution is federal government’s problem”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He explained that the state government was already mobilizing to fix the road when the Federal Government came and demanded that they would fix it themselves.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to him, “It is over a year now. We are yet to ask them what they have done to improve the road. The problem in Apapa is problem caused by lack of proper management of oil distribution and port management.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“I believe that everyone has a role to play. Even the transporters have their own role in addressing this issue. We have some progress within one week. <script type="text/javascript"> <script size='468x60' src='http://srvpub.com/adServe/banners?tid=22528_31474_5' type='text/javascript'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google_ad_client = "ca-pub-6630608044863529"; google_ad_slot = "4870332095"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; </script> <script src='//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js' type='text/javascript'> </script> <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div xmlns='http://ift.tt/lH0Osb'><br /><p><img alt="EFCC-Chairman-Ibrahim-Lamorde1" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-118442" height="280" src="http://ift.tt/1sQN3Hi" width="436"/>The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday said it had secured more than 773 convictions and recovered billions of naira since its inception in 2003.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Mr Ibrahim Lamorde, Chairman of the commission, disclosed this on Friday in Sokoto while inaugurating the Usman Danfodiyo University chapter of ‘Zero Tolerance Club’, an anti-corruption club.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Lamorde, represented by Mr Osita Nwajah, Deputy Director, Public Affairs Department of the commission, had also delivered a paper entitled: ”Students should lead the fight against economic and financial crimes”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>He said the war against corruption and financial crimes would only be won through collective efforts.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Economic and financial crimes constitute a great challenge to the Nigerian economy and our nation’s image, both at home and abroad.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>”The commission has been reorienting Nigerians not only to see the devastating effects of corruption, economic and financial crimes in all facets of our lives, but also to rise and do something about it”, he said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Lamorde expressed concern on the involvement of students in cybercrime, and warned them to desist from using the Internet to defraud innocent people.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>”On a daily basis, the commission arrests, detains and prosecutes offenders in various cases of Internet scams”, adding that 65 per cent of those arrested were undergraduates.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to him, it hurts so much to see the future leaders of Nigeria languishing in jail, but added that the law must take its course.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>In her contribution, Hajiya Aisha Larai-Musa, Head of Public Enlightenment and Re-Orientation Unit of the commission, also decried the high rate of criminal activities among students of tertiary institutions.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>She enumerated some of the crimes perpetrated by the students to include examination malpractice, advance fee fraud, cybercrime, extortion, bribery, cultism, identity theft, among others.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>She said the inauguration of the club, instituted in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), was part of efforts to find lasting solution to the problems.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“The club, which is non-partisan and non-profit making, was conceived to promote awareness on corruption among students in tertiary institutions”, Larai-Musa said.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>In a remark, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Riskuwa Shehu, represented<br/><br /><br/><br />by his Deputy, Prof. Abubakar Bagudo, urged Nigerians to “collectively and frontally fight corruption”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“Unless this is done, the dream of achieving sustainable growth and development in Nigeria would continue to elude the nation”, Shehu warned.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>The Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, commended the commission for introducing the club, saying corruption has become ”a hydra-headed monster thwarting the socioeconomic development of Nigeria”. Okoji Ndah close, off Ambassador Leo Okogwu street Asaba was discovered on Wednesday, following an information received by the police that one Toyota Highlander SUV with registration number AKD703AE (Lagos) was snatched at gun point from one Mrs. Uche Osigwe in Enugu State”.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Aduba said the state police operatives, acting on a tip off, stormed the workshop and arrested five suspects, one Kelechukwu Okoye, Chidiebere Owuse, Nkemefuna Odenigbo, Nzube Eze and Chinedu Agulobe.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to him, Felix Nadh, a Deltan and indigene of Asaba was also arrested, as he was found to be the owner of the property used by the gang who had earlier escaped from police surveillance but were arrested through the assistance of the Asaba vigilante group.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>Several vehicle number plates and instruments used for panel beating and painting of stolen vehicles were also recovered.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>According to Aduba, the suspects who hail from the neighbouring Anambra state are helping the police in investigation as they will soon be charged to court.</p><br /><br/><br /><align><ins class='adsbygoogle' data-ad-client='ca-pub-0909255462614293' data-ad-slot='7578597399'> </ins> </align><br /><br/><br />="left"><br/><br /><br/><br /><br/> </div><br /></div>

Meanwhile, the aforementioned agencies do not own aircraft, boats or even railway equipment.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>However, Okogu claimed that these provisions were done in error and were glitches that arose from using the GIFMIS accounting system for preparation of the budget for the first time and related the error to what was witnessed in the United States of America with the Obamacare policy.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“What happened was that GIFMIS being a new system, had some glitches that reflected in some of the provisions. It is not totally strange. Many of you have read about the Obamacare and the challenges they had in actually implementing it. It is a big system, bigger than ours, but with the same features.</p><br /><br/><br /><p>“What we saw in 2014 is because this is the first time we have used the GIFMIS to prepare the budget. I actually feel very proud. It is an issue which we have recognised and I want to use this opportunity to assure everyone that we will clean the books.
