The Federal Ministry of Works building on the premises of the Tafawa Balewa Square on Lagos Island went up in flames on Tuesday evening.

As of the time of filing this report, firemen and security operatives were said to be battling the inferno which started around 5pm.

At least three offices on the ground floor of the two-storey building were said to have been severely damaged as the firemen also had tough time fighting off a surging crowd.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Mr. Rasak Fadipe, while confirming the incident, told our correspondent that the fire began after a refrigerator in the building developed an electrical fault.

He said, “But we are already battling the fire. The fire truck from the Onikan fire station arrived the scene with 10,000 litres of water and the firefighting operation is still on.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire started from a refrigerator. Three offices have been severely damaged and we have prevented surrounding buildings from being affected.”
