OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network has secured the network television rights to Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, South African producer Anant Singh’s highly praised film about former President Nelson Mandela, starring Idris Elba as the late global icon and Naomie Harris as Winnie Mandela.
The movie, which was co-produced by US-based The Weinstein Company (TWC), will premiere on the American pay channel in 2017.
Harvey Weinstein, TWC co-chairman, commented, "We’re delighted that this film has landed a television home at Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network. Partnering with them ensures the picture will continue to honour the memory of Nelson Mandela for years to come.”
Said Erik Logan, president of OWN, “We couldn’t be more honoured to showcase this powerful film to the OWN viewers. Nelson Mandela was Oprah’s hero, and ultimately, the inspiration behind Oprah’s school in South Africa. His story of forgiveness and redemption is a gift not only to the people he touched, but to the world.”
Directed by Justin Chadwick, the film also stars Tony Kgoroge, Terry Pheto, Riaad Moosa, Fana Mokoena, Jamie Bartlett, Deon Lotz, Gys de Villiers, Carl Beukes, David Butler, Atandwa Kani and Lindiwe Matshikiza, among others.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom screens nationwide in South Africa and has received critical acclaim after its release in the US, Canada and parts of Europe. The movie debuts in the UK on Friday 3 January 2014.
