Military-670In a bid to sustain the ongoing military war against Boko Haram insurgents, the Defense Headquarters has begun the evacuation of families of all soldiers in Kuru Mohammed Barracks in Bama, Borno State.

The move is aimed at screening the living population in the barracks as well as to reduce the number of casualties during attacks against the insurgents along Bama-Cameroon border route.

The evacuation will also enable the military authorities conduct a thorough sweep of the barracks for mines which might have been planted by the insurgents following last Friday’s pre-dawn attack on the barracks which led to the death of no fewer than 15 soldiers and civilians as well as an unspecified number of Boko Haram members in a counter-attack.

The military was still ascertaining the death toll as at press time on Sunday.

It was gathered that the Defense Headquarters decided to evacuate the families of all soldiers in the barracks following intelligence report of likely infiltration or mix up of insurgents with residents.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “As at Saturday, we have evacuated the families of soldiers in the barracks to safer and less vulnerable places.

“As I am talking to you, only troops are living in the barracks in line with their calling. This temporary measure was typical of what happens during a war. We have declared total war against Boko Haram in the Bama–Cameroon borders axis”.
